I've been down to Carmel a few times with my adventure island. Stillwater and Whaler's cove are the most obvious places to launch. But I am looking for a backup launch location when those places are too crowded. Since it is hard to pull the kayak a long distance on the beach, it only leave the more risky places: Carmel River Beach (south end), Carmel by the beach (middle), or Monastery beach. It seems like kayakers launch out of those locations all the time on calm days, but is it easier to launch from the beach with outriggers? Ive got some fat sand tires and I'll be going with a group of experienced kayakers. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks,

check out Lovers point beach. easy to get down there, super easy launch. Not as easy to get back up the short run of sandy beach to the cement. I have the wide Malone wheels, thought they would be good in the sand, they are not.

This is why I don't have/want an AI. Because it would be very difficult to launch at all of my favorite spots. Your list sounds pretty good though, Michael. You just named the nearby launches. Except for whalers cove...I don't know of any ncka'ers who've launched there in 12+ years.

Also depending on what time of the year, there is a lot kelp in the area. No bueno on rudders and pedals.

Just curious why that's the case. The times I've been there with the family, it always looked like an easy launch, and it does not too look like it's too far to get out of the Point Lobos SMR...

Launched my AI out of Capitola many many times and was usually a piece of cake. Timing of course was necessary, but it was easier than you think to launch, just do it with one ama out and get a running push start and hop on in, make a couple strokes and done. Landing was the tricky part!

I'd give Whalers cove a try. Make sure you have a GPS to show that your track went outside the MPA. Maybe even take cell phone photos of your catch with GPS tags if you're extra paranoid
