very sad. A lot of people are getting into the sport and don't realized how windy it gets in the bay!!

The wind and current in the bay shouldn't be taken lightly. Know your limits!!

Doesn't sound like he was just getting into the sport but other issues might have been involved. Sad day for sure.

This is such a tragedy that Christopher lost his life on Saturday. I live aboard a Motor Yacht here in the Berkeley Marina, and Christopher was always a joy to watch, as he was a skilled and avid outrigger canoeist...and strong athlete I might even say. I can't for the life of me imagine that Christopher would not have been able to safely maneuver his way through the north end of the marina entrance, even in the high winds and choppy seas that we were having that day...he was just that good at handling his outrigger. Having myself been a sailor for some 38 years now, I seriously believe that Christopher may have been capsized by another boat trying to get into or out of the marina through the North entrance. It was Saturday and the end of a very busy day for boats on the bay, and was the time of day that many sailboats and motorboats were all heading home to the Marina. The North entrance for some reason has two "seawalls" which makes it somewhat difficult to to have good visibility as you enter and leave that entrance, and being as low on the water as Christopher would have been in his outrigger canoe, perhaps he was hit or capsized by the wake of a boat moving between the seawalls? In any case, it is is such a tragedy that Christopher was lost. My deepest condolences to his Family and Friends. He will be sorely missed by all of us at the Marina who loved seeing him doing what perhaps he loved doing most...out on the beautiful....deep blue sea. May he rest in Peace.
I'll rest when I'm dead!

I was just saying in general and not about this incident. People go out in the bay thinking it is protected only to find themselves stuck fighting the wind and current.

With the additional information you provided, it is a sad incident for sure.

Bay be crazy on some days. Yup, knowing the tides and how the wind in the bay blows is important to being safe out there.

For example the wind at oyster point almost, always, blows out, meaning it can difficult to paddle back to the marina becuase the wind is trying to force you towards the central bay. I take that place pretty darn serious.

In Berkeley the wind tends to blow you towards Berkeley. I will fish all the way in the morning and let the tide and wind take me back by 12 ish.

It's important stuff if someone is new to kayak fishing to understand how this works. Heart sent condolences for his soul to rest in peace.
