Been driving a little farther to get to some better fishing lately. It's been paying off. These two fish were the highlights of my last two trips southward.

29 inch lingcod

21 inch vermillion rockfish (Fillets were super thick!)

Looking through my camera roll today and came across this picture from one of the best fishing I have had with my brothers. It was just 3 and a half hours of constant fish, we only stopped fishing because we didnt have anymore customers to sell it too!

MY FIRST MFPBE (Monkey Faced Prickle Back Eel... i think.... btw, what's the difference between a wolf eel and a MFPBE?)

QUICK STORY: Copper roof house was SUPER dead. dove ALL over the place and saw NOTHING other than some perch. My buddy said he saw some holes below so I went down and almost didn't shoot the face poking out due to how small it looked. I tapped it on the head to see if it would move; it didn't. So bam. Stoned him (basically a cheater shot). When I tried to pull him out, he wouldn't budge. I came up for air and when I went back down and got him out, it startled me! I had no idea I shot an "eel." After that found a school of monster perch and shot a couple for tacos (I don't care what others say, I like perch and they are super easy to clean).

QUESTION: What is the average size of a MFPBE? This one is bigger than some of the videos i see on youtube.

PS. Check out this big Gopher, too!

MFE max out at 30” and 6.1 lbs according to scientists.
That said, the state record for a MFE taken by a diver is 7 lbs 5 oz.

Wolf eels are not related to MFE.

Thank you. This MFE was longer but thinner. I'd love some recipe thoughts.

Nice monkey!!

Wolf eels have big sharp teeth and larger heads and different colorations...

Have attached a few pics...the UW pics are of the same crack that I have been visiting since 2014...have seen the wolves (sometimes solo and sometimes paired up) multiple times.  :smt004

Any monkeys over 28/29 inches are really solid specimens.

Current state diving record was 30 inches and had a belly full of rotting kelp and a small little octopus...

You can see monkey examples here for size comparison.

They make bomb ceviche...

Thanks for the info Jim! And for the kind words. I wish I would have measured it now! I'll have to try the ceviche recipe.

The fillets cook up fine too if you don't feel like messing with ceviche...

I've also cooked them whole with skin on and skin tastes good as well...

I think the most important thing is to gut asap and get stinky belly contents away from flesh.

Nice monkey.  I like MFE...Never shot one up here, but poke-poled a bunch of them.  They are great eating, prepared all kinds of ways, and super easy to fillet if you have a sharp knife.

One of my  favorite ways to cook them (or other rockfish) is heat a pan with some butter or coconut oil on low.  Put in the fillets, seasoned with salt, pepper, thyme, garlic powder, and onion powder.  Let it cook, covered, for 4-5 minutes or so, then flip and cut the heat off.  Let it cook (with no flame) for another 4-5 minutes or so with the cover on.  Especially large pieces of fish may need an extra minute or 2 per side, but don't overdo it.  Pretty foolproof and super tasty stuff. Great with bread, on a sandwich, on rice, or whatever.
