I'm looking to mount a rod holder to my Malibu Pro Explorer.   I primarily fish on the lake and plan to learn to fish the ocean next.  I will also use my kayak for diving from so I want to have it removable and plan on using a flush mounting system on the flat spot between my feet.  Please let me hear you advice so I can make an educated decision.

Thank You,
Steve

I'd look into the new Scotty round flush rod holder mount.  The bottom is already sealed and perfect for our kayaks.  They're a little hard to find, but I know you can order one from http://www.kayakfishinggear.com/catalog/scotty_round_flush_mount_3835426.htm

I'm seriously thinking about mounting one on my Prowler.

That mount looks great.  If I ordered that which rod holder would you recommend?  I'd also like to get an extension.  Recommendations?  It would be great if I could order from the same place.

Steve - IMO: get a detachable rodholder & keep it simple and out of the way - if you land a big fish, you'll need a lot of deck space to work with.

I don't even use a rod holder in front. I lay the butt of the fishing rod under my right thigh and lean the rod (the first or second guide) on my left lower shin.

The only flush mounts I have are on the rear (for trolling) - right behind the seat - pointing out to the side of the kayak - so I can see the tip of the rod on the corner of my eye if and when a fish strikes. It works well for me cause it does not get in the way of a paddle stroke - especially when I make turns.

I'd get the more versatile tube style holder at same place.  The extension also sounds like a good idea, but the one they sell is $21 :smt013 and 6-1/2" long.  That may be too long for our needs.  I'd probably try it without the extension first.

Can I just pull the rod holder out of the mount that it comes with and just place it in the flush mount?  I can buy one of those (Scotty) from WalMart.

I have a wal mart scotty mounted with the original base on the side of my footwell.  Its out of the way, within reach and I can always watch the rod.

You might want to check out the RAM Tube rodholder.  I showed some pics of it in my recent Kayak Rigging post.  I had a chance to try it out this weekend and I really like it.  Very adjustable and robust and it's easy to get the rod out of it in a hurry.

I had a scotty rodholder but I never much liked it... somewhat because it was sometimes difficult to get the rod out of very quickly... and also because I didn't install it in the best location.

I didn't have the tube style scotty... it was the type with the open top and the little rubber latch that you could use to lock your rod in.

The tube style would definitely be better... much quicker to get the rod in and out.

The main thing is to make sure you take the time to install it in the right spot... if you mess that up... you might as well have not done it at all.

Steve-Any of those style will work well just be careful that you don't put it in a place that will cause issues.

Things to think about:

1) Not getting in the way of later additions like a ff.  A scotty on the console will generally block your view.

2) Not getting in the way of your paddle stroke.

3) Putting the rod in a place that makes it hard to get your feet in an out.  Definitley put a rod in the holder and then sit in your yak and pretend to do what you do.

The mount that Chuck posted is nice.  Their rectangular one migh go good on the side of a pro-e too.  Let me know if you need any help.

You can throw together a 'ghettobar' system like I've got and avoid all the drilling, ect.  It's also transferable between kayaks.

BTW-by the time you buy a Scotty, a different mount, and an extension you can buy one of these for less money. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jhtml?id=0001487012181a&type=product&cmCat=search&returnString=hasJS=true&_D%3AhasJS=+&QueryText=tite-lok&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jhtml.22&Go.x=8&Go.y=7&N=4887&Ntk=Products&Ntx=mode+matchall&Nty=1&Ntt=tite-lok&noImage=0&returnPage=search-results1.jhtml

Tite-loks are bullet proof and solve a lot of "in the way" issues.  Looks like this on an MK.  The base is nice and low profile too.  *Bling* and clean looks are no extra charge  :smt033
