General Talk / Point Molate Development plans
« on: March 13, 2020, 08:13:08 PM »
 Hi everyone,
Just interested to hear about different perspectives regarding the proposed Point Molate development project that will be on this upcoming November ballot here in Richmond.
Heard a broadcast of interviews from indigenous/conservation perspective on KPFA today that was very anti-development and pro conservation.
Apparently there is an important eel grass bed nearby that would be greatly affected as well is a negative consequence to Richmond taxpayers long term.
Thoughts/opinions?
This will affect our local fishery and we should be having a debate about it’s potential impact.
Chime in please!

Talk to BigJim, he seems to have great success spearing those guys.
My option is that they are hard to see being ambush predators, are camouflaged well and are difficult to see with optimal clarity. Would think it to be near impossible with murkiness of the Bay?
That being said would, love to see a post about you attempt!

General Talk / Re: Help Change Generator Hours at Doran!
« on: January 30, 2020, 10:48:04 AM »
Thanks for starting a new thread for this discussion:

RE Generators: I have to say I'm on the complete opposite spectrum as PakehaCherie and find generators and loud music of others to be out of place in a campground, noise pollution you can't block out. I'm moraly, ethically, philosophically and any other "lly" opposed to bringing your house camping with you.

I have no problem with RVers all grouped together away from tent campers being allowed to run generators and the like until all hours but we're all there (well, I am at least) to disconnect from creature comforts and reconnect with nature and in a spot so near the water who wants to listen to someone else's motor running?
To me a big part of why I go camping is listening to the waves, the wind, the crickets! Not really there to hear your generator or listen to your favorite tunes.

I'm all for the restrictions and think that it's not a big deal to just plan ahead a bit and get all your charging done before 8PM is it?

My thoughts, don't want to be offensive or contrary, hmm, maybe I like being contrary a bit :smt003,  but I guess we all have our own preferences/priorities.  :smt005

Generators at Doran Beach - Update!

Hi everyone,
Like many of you, I was incredibly frustrated to learn that we could only use our generators from 8am to 8pm while camping at Doran this past weekend. The camp hosts came around and knocked at our door, saying it had been changed about 6 months ago. We had planned on running our generator to charge our equipment from 8-10pm since we were gone all day!

When we checked-out of the camp grounds, the rangers/staff at the front booth were incredibly sympathetic and encouraged us to contact the Regional Parks office. They told us that others had complained (not sure how many) about the generators going until 10pm, so the county changed it.

The staff recommended that we share the contact info with everyone we know, and to get as many people as possible to contact the parks office! We may actually get them to change their generator hours if there is enough polite and professional feedback about the hours. We are such a large forum, we could easily get thousands of calls/emails to them.

Personally, I think we should be allowed to run generators from 7am to 10pm - this allows us time to catch-up on some work, charge equipment, and cook our crab!

Please consider contacting the Sonoma County Regional Parks, and let them know that as a long-time camper at Doran, you would like to see them change the generator hours and restore them to the 7am-10pm time frame. Let them know how it impacts you and your use of the camping facilities.

Contact them by email (which is probably best):

As a first timer was really impressed with the level of organization, POT LUCK and raffle prizes. Great Job VWool and family!

 Great information, thank you fishingaddict!
Only one correction that I see, although admittedly no expert.

Per the CG link you provided channel 13 is used to communicate with large vessels to avoid collision, this is a new one to me and seems useful in the bay and if for some reason you’re clueless enough to get stuck in front of a large barge or ferry vessel, although paddling or peddling like hell is preferable over fumbling with radio. Useful I suppose if caught adrift,  literally up shits creek without a paddle. I will say from experience that using your hands to row is effective (at least with smaller, ruderless kayak that can be paddled backward) and have even used my net as a paddle, yes I’m that asshole that has lost my paddle not once, not twice, but thrice!
From USCG.gov:
“Boaters should normally use channels listed as Non-Commercial. Channel 16 is used for calling other stations or for distress alerting. Channel 13 should be used to contact a ship when there is danger of collision. All ships of length 20m or greater are required to guard VHF channel 13, in addition to VHF channel 16, when operating within U.S. territorial waters. Users may be fined by the FCC for improper use of these channels.

Per usual I regret trying to save money by DIYing and wish I had just dropped the coin for the store bought cart, was kind of in to build and spent about $110ish all in.
