I'm starting an event here at my Marina(Pt San Pablo Harbor in Richmond)
and need some input. Right now I am getting sponsors set up and structuring the event. We will have room for camping for RV's, but we don't have hook ups and tent camping in the meadow. We also will have access to the Sportsmens club and Bar for restrooms and the event and this will be a lot of fun. This will be a kayak only event for Halibut and Striped Bass.
There will be cash prizes for 1st, 2nd & 3rd place in both entries. $20.00 entry fee and All proceeds (if any) to go to the Pay it forward account.
I just got a volunteer to donate a whole pig and yoke roast to the event!
-
I would not plan it on GS weekend. You will lose a LOT of possible participants.
-
I am definitely thinking the same thing, plus someone told me that July usually doesn't have much going on anyway.. That's where my head is right now.
-
This sounds great!! I am all in for sure as long as it doesn't overlap the gimme shelter event. Ill be glad to help you organize and execute.
-
Last time I drove out there (to San Pablo Yacht Harbor), the residents didn't seem to kind to strangers. It's a really secluded area, even saw a sign saying 'No Outside Fishermen' or something to that effect.
Are you a resident there or have talked to other residents about possible dozens of kayak fishermen coming into their area?
I've scouted the area several times and its definitely fishy area.
-
This Marina has been bought by some friends of mine, and I am the harbormaster here... a lot is changing and in the works. This is turning into a different kind of place.
People are now allowed to fish here, but must at least check in with the office and if you want to launch your yak off the beach, no problem. The only rule we have is that nobody but residents can park on the jetty, just have to park by the office , club or front parking area after you launch.
-
Forgot to mention I also live here on my boat..
-
A buddy who knows the marina well and I are going to go visit. I assume you kayak as well based upon your date registered here. At any rate, pleased to hear we will be welcomed and looking forward to the event, sounds great.

-
Sounds like fun!
-
Sounds good, that is a neat secluded area with lots of structure including old piers and access to the Brothers. Never fished it but will if this event happens.
Marina wasn't very inviting in the past happy to hear that's changing!

This sounds great Jack, and THANK YOU for thinking of PIF as a recipient of proceeds.
:smt008
You've got some good guys on here that have offered to help (kayakjack etc), so I am confident it will be a great success.
If you need anything form me just let me know.

Where exactly is that? I work in San Pablo and was over there scouting around and ended up by a park like area with a nice launch, old navy ship nearby. Anyway, this is really cool and I'd attend this for sure. Would be nice to get more familiar and fish this body of water!

drive like your taking the Rich-San Raf. bridge..to Point Molate take the exit follow Stenmark Drive to PT. San Pablo Marina Rd. and you`ll run smack into it ..
-
I like the idea. I have launched there many times and gone to the Brothers and Red Rock. Deep shipping channel close by and some
ferry traffic, but very convenient. You have to watch the low tide however. Lets make this Richmond event rock.
-
Sounds awesome! I'm in and I'll get Pacific Outfitters to donate some prizes!
-
As I am reading this and thinking this guys "NEW" and I am "NEW" I can't help but think of the founders of the site and a big THANK YOU! You guys are rockstars! I'm hopping this year I can start attending some of these events...
-
I would be in for the July date. May 20 I will be at GS. Thanks for considering the GS date and having an alternative. Appreciate your time and effort putting this event together. I agree with Raydon...... have a feeling this event will ROCK.
-
Used to go out of the harbor there back in the day on a charter boat a lot called the New Keesa with Capt . Mike . Anyone remember the old whaling station .. this sounds interesting , hope to have a new kayak by then
-
Looks like July 15 is the date Jack! Thank you for introducing a new venue and I'm pretty sure a good amount of folks will participate just to see what it's all about.
I'm here to help too!
-

Vic I remember the New Keesa. Scubaluis and I have fished out of there many times on the charterboat "The Fury" back in the day. Man, that brings back alot of memories.
Thanks for putting this thing together Jack. It sounds like it could be a really good event. I look forward to it.

July 15? I should have my kayak rack done by then. :smt044
-
Sounds like fun, I'm in the only question I have do you have a reserve a space for your trailer? Thanks for setting this event up.
-
Never was aware of Pt San Pablo Harbor. I used to go to Richmond Marina to fish on the Cobra. Stopped fishing the Cobra because the crew played favorites as to who they took care of or allowed to fish off the back of the boat.

Who's big jim?

I can't wait to see this marina... and have a fishing spot where I can bring the travel trailer. I'm sorry to say I will not be in town on July 14 (first trip to Alaska!) That July date does look good with an outgoing tide early AM. But I noticed the first week of August has some nice rising tides early AM. If it gets pushed back from July, I'm rooting for August. Anyway sounds like a great event but way before that I want to check out the marina. Looks like they hired the right guy! Thanks for planning this event.
-

I will be setting up the trailer spaces in May, and developing a map for everyone with sizes and spaces!

Alright everyone, I am moving into the next Phase of this event and I need some help. I have a name for the yearly event and it shall be named:
"Red White and Stripers, just for the Halibut"
This is what I need help with Right now:
- Sponsor Donations for the raffle (proceeds going to pay it forward)
- Artwork for the digital and printable flyer
- help setting up registration and event page(I already have a paypal account set up)
If anyone has experience doing this and can help, we would greatly appreciate it!
FYI: 32" halibut was caught 2 days ago in 5ft of water slow trolling dead anchovie... right outside the harbor, last weekend (2) sturgeon were caught right outside.. 57" and 44"
-
Never fished there but it sounds fun. My family will be in France, so no need for a E ticket :-) I'm game if I'm not traveling.
Would we be able to stay overnight? Sorry but not very familiar with the area
-
That sounds super fun Jack. I'll be there. This will be a great midsummer event that is central to most folks. Good job.
-
As I am reading this and thinking this guys "NEW" and I am "NEW" I can't help but think of the founders of the site and a big THANK YOU! You guys are rockstars! I'm hopping this year I can start attending some of these events...
Yeah, what he said ^^^
Looks like fun and a good time on the 15th of July, hope I can make it.
I Zod Out

During this event there is spaces to put up tents and also places to park your RV, but keep in mind there is no hookups or dump station here.
-
PIF is a good recipient of any funds raised. I would also like to suggest HOW-NorCal if you haven't made up your mind yet . (Facebook-Nor Cal)

Finalize the date, I'll try to get day off. Been planning to fish that area but don't know where to start/ launch!

I'm going to Alaska for 2 weeks the same weekend as you are!
I'll be staying in anchorage since my folks live up there and probably fish the kenai at times.
I've been going for the past 4 years...
If you want to link up, let me know.
-
I am so glad to hear this is happening.. As a Richmond resident, this is a really cool launch spot and place to fish that has been very unfriendly in the past to outsiders. It is good to see this is going to happen.
I am in..
-
Im no artist but Ill throw my 2 cents in on logo. How about a sketch of the Richmond bridge with kayaks underneath and a giant halibut jumping over with the crossed pole and paddle intersecting through the bridge. Also semi-hide the letters NCKA in the framework of the bridge.
-
The ad is on its way... I am having the website, sign ups and sponsors in the works... CAn anyone help with sponsors? I am new to this and stressin out a bit on puttin this together. My phone number is 510.575.1190, feel free to call me anytime!
If anyone can improve on this flyer design, I would love the assistance!
-
I also have a volunteer for some nice trophies... custom cnc milled trophies for 1st and 2nd placing for Halibut and Striped bass.
-
Maybe check with the nearest kayak shop and see if they can help out.
-
How do you get sponsers, walk in the door and give em' a shpeel and ask for something? Clavey, Westmarine, Surf 101, Proof Lab, just brainstorming, I would give it a try, a walk in may be more effective then a phonecall?
-
Don't stress over the prizes. Not every Yak fishing tournament requires big prizes. Having a place to camp is a big draw and a spot with a wind break and room for a potluck will make the event memorable.

This!!! $10 of entry to pot, prizes? I'm just lookig forward to playing in a new spot!

I wonder if the gents at bay tackle would sponsor, they are the local bait and fishing shop.

Hi Jack?
Glad to have run across your post about a Tournament on Richmond/Pt. Richmond area in mid July seems very attractive.
Sounds like you are very involved with the harbor and it would be great to develop new NCKA gatherings. Our guys are always first class and would do the marina a lot of good and attract a lot of good people and energy.
It also seems very attractive that those of us who would like to get more experience fishing for Hali's in the Bay that might be in sync with the Hali's migrating up the Bay at that time.
The ARW-2017 Tournament last weekend turned out really great. Easy launches with the possibility of landing one of the big guys.
I will be busy the next couple of weeks and I would come for sure to get out on the water.
Mahalo,
da Bruddah

Is this event still on?
Thank You
-
Hi Jack - I updated your post title and added your flier to the first post. Hope you don't mind! :smt006

Now that the ARW tournament is done, just wondering what is the status of this one? --Just curious
-
Is this going to happen even with low attendance?
-
Hey Guys and Gals, I am back from an ocean voyage and Dealing with Harbor tenants...Yaaay!!
This is the first time I am attempting this and I really don't mind if we don't have a huge turnout. I am going for a not-so-serious event andif nothing else It will just turn into a fish and Chill.... The prize cash will go to the top 3 biggest fish and the top three will get a trophy. Prize cash is determined by how many people enter and so far we have 14 people entered..
I am expecting folks to show up Friday night and I will be calling back the folks who reached out to me in the past to help out today to talk and see what the final game plan will be.
Dogs welcome, Kids welcome, Potluck BBQ Saturday night, The bar and sportsmen's club will be open..
Remember also that you don't have to launch at the harbor to participate, but it is encouraged and launching elsewhere will limit your fishing time...
If you choose to catch and release there will be a "item" which will be included that you have to have in your photo when you put them in the trough to measure them.
I have a feeling we will have a good time no matter what happens!
Please let me know if you have any more questions!
-
Looking forward to it! :smt006
-
I'm going to sign up.
Your access to the waiver and sign-up is not the best. Don't see a direct link to it on the first page or a mention of it in the most current posts. The Poster -IF you look closely at the Poster it does say were to go. So you go to JacksDiving and you don't see it. Then you have to go back to NCKA and read that it says - /RWS. Makes people hestitate and think -I'll get back to this later. There usually is a big flurry of sign-ups near the end and if you don't have a signup deadline there is no motivation to sign-up early
Oops - checked the calendar and I can't make that date - Dang.
-
this sound like a fun event...:( i'm sad I'm going to miss it.
-
UPDATE!!
I added a link on www.jacksdiving.com front page so it's easy to access!
I added, Rules, Schedule of events and Directions and Also the Waiver at the bottom of the sign up page!
I have decided to buy the one prize for this event to put towards Cash for the winners....
As Andy the man says "Cash can pay some bills homie, we have hella fishing stuff already!"
I will try and get More Sponsors for next year, but this year has been a bust as far as that goes, And I really haven't had the time to grind on writing letters and calling sponsors.
Please remember to call me on my cell if you have any questions and bring lotsa lotsa food for the Potluck, I will be getting the pig for the roast!

What's up Jack Sorry I missed you that day. Shifra and I had fun hanging at the marina. Met the new owners who are awesome nice friendly folks. I'm excited to see the pig you are going to roast in that nice Caja China at the cafe.
Will the cafe and bar be open the weekend we are there?

Hey jack,
It was great to talk with you and looking forward to coming by the Marin in a few days to see the place and see how I can help you make this 7/15 NCKA Tourney a success. Do you know if the big Hali's are moving up the Bay this time of the year? The Pt. San Pablo Harbor looks like a really beautiful and somewhat remote spot.
I am sure that a lot of the NCKA guys/gals are going to want to come to fish in this secluded part of the Bay!!!!
Who can't use some extra cash in July!!!
Guys, here's a link to the Pt. San Pablo Yacht Harbor: http://pspyh.com/

As Far as live bait is concerned, I will have an answer by Monday if we can go get some. It's going to be about $20 for around 20+/- anchovies.

Hey Jack,
It was great to meet the Harbor folks this morning, Frank, Robert/Commodore, Bonny. What nice people!!
Wanted to add these new info about the tournament:
There will be a designated area that we can park, camp, that on the East side of the property and it will be marked.
There will be extra signs on Stenmark Drive to guide you to Pt. San Pablo Yacht Harbor after you get off the Pt. Molate exit. The turnoff road to the harbor is a couple of miles of “bumpy” road, paved, but bumpy. Yeah, Ok for cars. The place is kind of out there and secluded. Keep your eye on the signs!!
There will be a water hose with sprayer that will be going right to the launch beach, with maybe a couple wood shipping pallets to wash of our yaks and wetsuit as soon as we come out of the water.
I just found this morning that the gas stove in the Clubhouse will be fixed in time for the tournament.
Best news: one of harbor residents is this really old timer Charter Captain Frank who has a charter boat called the Fury there. He is taking his boat on Friday to pick up some live anchovies from SF for us. He has a whole live bait rig next to his boat at the harbor. What a great guy!!
Live bait will generous and not expensive!!
Guess now you need to bring a live bait holder.
We will also have a live Rock Band on the Saturday Night Potluck/Awards!!!
These are guys live at the harbor and from what I hear they are really good!!
Maybe some guys may just come for the party!!
The Tournament is providing:
70# Caja China roasted pig
Vietnamese Chow Mein from Vietnamese Restaurant Cam Huong in Oakland
Jasmine Rice
Mixed green salad with Balsamic/Lemon Vinaigrette Dressing
Watermelon
Plates and Utensils, etc.
NCKA’ers bring whateva you are inspired to compliment this spread on Saturday Night.
We are having a Safety Meeting 8pm at the Clubhouse on Friday.
Frank the Charter Captain of the Fury, will be talking about fishing in the bay, currents, tides, etc. He's an incredible body of knowledge about fishing in the Bay. Lucky!!! For first timers and da rest of us!!
There will be a safety protocol for getting rescued and communication with the harbor during the tournament.
(On Saturday, Jack will have the Harbor Whaler gassed up and ready to go to help anyone who might get caught in tides, etc.)
It looking like a great time for fishing and relaxing is coming up soon!!
Mahalo,
Da Bruddah

Shooting for Friday night. Hoping to make the safety meeting.

Hi Victor,
The 8pm Friday Night Safety Meeting at the Clubhouse is not mandatory, but highly recommended. Capt. Frank of the Fury, who has over 40 years fishing the Bay will talk about ebb tides, tides and other safety issues fishing this particular part of San Pablo Bay. Capt. Frank has a wealth of knowledge for fishing in the Bay!!
See you soon?
Michael

Just to be clear, I can sign up when I get there???????? Or do I need to do it online before the tourny?

There isn't any picnic tables yet on the property, but you can bring one yourself, and I have plenty of "lil friends"... no need... This place is safe and secure... ! You'll like it.

Hey Guys and Gals,
Parking, camping is one thing.
I think that when people see the outdoor deck at the Sportmans Clubhouse, it will probably be the go to place to hang out.
Looks like that a high pressure system is moving in on Friday and it will be very warm over the weekend.
I am going to bring and potable beach chair and hang out by the beach. It will probably be the coolest place!!
I will be putting up 2 extra signs one right after you get off the freeway and the other at the turnoff road that will take you over the hill and down to the PT. San Pablo Yacht Harbor.
Note: It will look kind of desolate as you head along the Bay to Pt.
Molate.
Look for the 2nd large sign that will show you where to turn off.
There will be very bumpy, curvy paved road that will go up and and take you down to the Habor. (The bumpy road is about 2 miles and you will feel like your headed to nowhere!! Keep driving and hang in there . You will see the Harbor on your left as you come down the hill!!
Jack or I will be around when you arrive and will direct you to the camping/parking and.
Things are looking great our end!!
See you soon!!
Aloha?
da Bruddah

I've just signed up. Gotta join in on the festivity. Can't stay for the whole day due to family obligations, but at least a few hours of fishing anyway. I think it'll be fun. Thanks for putting this gig on. Herb N.

For the future, is there any possibility to launch a small (12') boat there?
Don't know much about halibut fishing but need to learn to get on those flatties. Are there keeper stripers around?
Big props to Jack and the new management for making this happen, and Da Bruddah for the big stoke put out to everyone.
Typically we don't allow launching of boats.... but If you set it up with me and you rent a slip I can launch with or for you.. The beach launch isn't our property and we have to use it sparingly

It was a good time. Fishing for me was fishing, no catching.
Met a few new faces.
I met Ron and Sara for the first time but because I have CRS I cannot remember Ron's screen name. If anyone can help me with that I'd appreciate it.
Thanks Jack for hosting this event. Next year will be even better.
And PS...the pig was PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!

Good time for sure. The pig was excellent. This a great spot to add to my repertoire. Thanks to Jacksdiving and his family for hosting and Dabruddah and Ariel for co-hosting. I thought everything flowed real smooth. This spot has tremendous potential for future NCKA events. It has that rural and remote feel while being mere minutes from some of the swankiest real estate in the world. Love it.

Fun Day, no keepers for me but always good to see some familiar faces and meet a few new ones. Had to split early for a family obligation but thanks Jack, Micheal, Ariel and Frank. Looking forward to spending more time out there since it's 10min from my house.
As a side note, possible future AOTY/DOTY awards location?
-
Early start. Arrived at 5:15 a.m. Started rigging, greeted at the beach by Jack, harbor master and Jacksdiving boss. Registered and proceeded. Ready to go, grabbed bucket and scored good bait from Frank of The Fury. Thanks Frank. Met Coleman(soleman), Alfonz(HavoctheBeast), Jason(fishguts), Tim(StrayAhi), and Frenchy. Plan to drift 18-20ft to North red marker 4. First drop, hit and scored, 9"shaker Hali. Boom, they are here. Slow troll to marker and in the distance I holler Kraken, met Anthony(Gearaddict) with same color Kraken and we yucked it up in Krakenese. Thanks for the tips. Met Ron(Weimarian), digging on his new peddle platform, and his daughter, what an inspiration to be fishing with your daughter. Met 2 week fresh kayaker Rich on the way up to 4 marker, he and Tim were workin' it. At the 4 marker, Michael(DaBruddah) hooks up, stripping line, hoping for monster Hali. We all gather round trying to catch the vibe...after a tiresome battle I think it broke off or he saw it. Dreaded monster stingray. I was grateful for all the radio camaraderie and safety communication. Harbormaster Jack took such good care of us it was super professional. Many large tankers, tug boats, fast ferries and stray sail boats that "waked" us all up. Drifting back to the brothers islands was the new goal for the bottom of the low. Started drifting south and oh...ohhh...what's that, fish on, kinda shaky, kinda, kinda....smoothhound shark....dang. Didn't want to miss some flow going out at the brothers so I paddled for em'. Moving along, try to cross the channel and overshot. Tried to paddle direct and going nowhere in 50+ fow. Feeling defeated and a bit desperate I paddled out of the current and north to try again to hit the eddy that Coleman was in on the lighthouse north side. Found my sweaty tired way there and dropped into the channel. Coming round the corner, pole went off, reeling, rippin through the middle got a potential keeper striper to the boat while greeting KayakJack in the south eddy of the lighthouse. My netting was a riot and I ended up pulling it into the boat by hand while heading toward the Richmond bridge in the current. Seems dramatic but I am not used to that amount of speed and adrenaline and positioning all at once. Eventually things calmed down in the current and I could deal with it. YES! 18" I'm on the board. Met Jack and he took a pic. He paddled around the west island to take another run. It is a rip through, reposition paddle crazy kinda spot and that was at the slow end of the low going out. Met Nick(CodAlmighty) and Jack and Coleman and hung in a south eddy for a bit and handed out some bait. Thanks Frank. Paddled up and against Coleman's recommendation, I tried to anchor on the northwest corner of the lighthouse just out of the drift, and by the time I figured out my anchor, QWRS, I was in the drift and flying and tired, I finally got my system organized and let the wrong line go and lost my anchor. HarborJack, if you are out there on a super low, there is a white buoy looking for you. Sorry bout the litter. There is a shimano pliers in there somewhere also. Jack and I made a move for the south towards an old massive pier that had wild depths and we rode it back on the incoming. No discoveries other than it is all deep water and fast. Tug boats have the biggest wakes and they move fast. Finished off at the red buoy 2. 20ft. 2 10" hali shakers and finally one to measure. 20", shucks, but fun. A charter parked near me so I marked the spot. I'll be back. Landed and broke down the gear and raced to work for a few haircuts and flew back to eat with the group. It was lively and super friendly. Great food, thanks for the pig roast Jack. It was a generous event. Glad to see Mike(Sledge) and meet Jeff(iroelikethat). What a great talk of Ohana and care from DaBruddah Michael. Thank you Michael. Great to meet you Kiel(ReelKnots) and finally brahhdah Ariel(ArielSea). Ya'all have awesome hospitality in your blood. Good to meet you Herb(Herb Superb) and Robert, who built our trophy plaques. Spoiler....Congratulations Nick, 3rd....Michael(RnRgeek)...!st....and super blessed to receive 2nd...yay me...in all humility. I was expecting nothing, but always hoping to win anything, just for fun. Beautiful plaque to hang in shop, also, cash is cool. Again, super grateful and let's keep fishing. If I forgot anything or anyone, pipe up....met a fella named Daniel who fly fishes the jetty and is gonna be a dad soon. Also Eric who works with HarborJack. Nothing but good times, great care, and great food. Hey, by the way, who flipped a yak, never heard the heckle or the lesson? Over and out... :smt006
-
Thanks for the chovie Eddie, good fishin' with ya!
-
Great report Eddie. Sounds like you had a great time and congrats on the 2nd place.
-
Eddie I'm gunna get you next year it's on just got the day off.!
-
This was a really really fun event.
I can't thank Jack, Michael (Da Bruddah) and Ariel enough for organizing this.
Everyone here was really nice and the pig was the best roast pig I've ever eaten.
I learned a lot while fishing yesterday. And a lot about tides and current from Capt. Frank and Ariel.
I got really lucky and managed to net the only keeper Halibut of the day at 24 inches.
That was enough to win but I have to say that Nick and Eddie are much better fishermen than me. I've seen them fish.
The $ helped ease the dent in my bank account that was emptied getting the new Hobie Outback, which had her maiden voyage.
-
Congrats, rnrgeek (Michael).
Was fun fishing day (no catching) for me. Fishingaddict and I couldn't stay for the potluck as I had a party to go to. Was a little interesting finding the fishing spots. Thanks for hosting Jack, great place you have there, thank you for hosting.
Thanks to all who co-hosted, DaBruddah and ArielSee (who I didn't even see all day)...
-
Beautiful day on the water (second time in my PA). Better day watching and learning the ways of halibut fishing. I was awed in the middle of my striper fight, next to East Brother island,(which was less than an 1/8 of an inch from second place), when I looked up and saw the SF skyline. California fishing is so diverse. After 10 hrs. on the water my sleep was uninterrupted for the next 12 hrs.
Thanks to the members who welcomed us so enthusiastically and gave us great advise. Thanks to all who sponsored the event and set us up. I will be back before the next tourney.
-
great time... thanks again jack! cant wait till next year! I have DanArky's? chair that was left at my site... what was his handle?

Nope, not that Ron.
The musician Ron.
I'm the other Ron. But Weimarian and I both rock the Mitchell 302 and have old Neckys in our fleets. I guess call me NewFutureRon for differentiation.
Tote, great to hang, and thanks for the beers! That RV of yours kicks serious ass.
BruddahMichael, thanks for letting me know about this. It was actually Sara and my 12th anniversary, and this was a great way to spend it. I've lived in this area my whole life and never knew this place existed. Such a great hidden gem.
Jack: thanks for getting the space opened up to our stink. It was a great time, and I hope this becomes a regular event. And thanks to Frank as well. I think I learned more from him in about 30 minutes than I have in the past year.
Hell of a potluck, and the band was pretty damned good too!
Couldn't have asked for a nicer time. 'cept maybe for a hookup OTW. But I'll take a 4 hour bathtub paddle any day of the week.
-
Good times for sure.
It was nice hanging out with everyone and to meet some new peeps too.
Thanks Jack and your community there for having us at your facility.
Nice pic Frenchy.
Congrats to the winners.
And who ever that was who flipped over. You don't owe me a beer. (but I'll take one ) :smt005
You owe it to yourself to know how to self rescue.....

Turns out his Hobie had filled with water. Self rescue was not the Issue. Glad we had back up! Lost his drive. Spent some time looking for it, but mud is so deep, that it is probably gone forever in 6' of water. the bay was amazing. Yes, I did catch 18 Halibut! 10-18" (thanks for thew tip Dustin) The red can must have had a carpet of them! All shorts and one short striper. Traveled 12 mile on my Radar pedal yak. Was so sore Sunday!!! 7 hrs = cramps! Paddled my way in with cramped legs. The whole hands free fishing, oh ya, I'm hooked. Backing up while working a snag free was amazing! Lost no gear to the bottom all day... Jack thanks for having us and sorry i blew up after the dog incident, some sad history there. My dog was a pain all weekend because ha can't go off leash (Beagles wander off) Hope next year's event will also have camping. Michael, Da brudder, You're a superstar! You put in so much work! I recognize your effort and thank you! As unto the band! They were boss, and hope they understand we left early due the outside nature of the group, not their quality. Wish I could have caught bigger fish but, now i know what Hali's feel like and a solid way to get them to bang the bait! Wasn't brave enough to hit the brothers Islands due to the currents but will in the future head out there. (not when legs are tired though) Good time!!! :smt006
-
Good to meet you Herb(Herb Superb) and Robert, who built our trophy plaques. Spoiler....Congratulations Nick, 3rd....Michael(RnRgeek)
Not me bro, I wasn't there. Must be The other Herb (Herb Ng). Congrats on placing. Sounds like a fun event. Would've been there if I wasn't working.

Would like to thank Jack for hosting this event in an awesome East Bay paradise. Point San Pablo Marina is an amazing place filled with lots of amazing people. Looking forward to future events and future scouting missions out of PSPM.
Michael Da Bruddah dude you kicked ass thanks for taking care of everybody. You made every feel comfortable and filled the peoples bellies
Didn't get to fish but had a drunken good time Friday and Saturday night. I was there as a civilian. I didn't have anything to do with organizing this event, just wanted to get drunk. Mission accomplished. All the credit goes to Jack and Michael.
It was good seeing you all at Stars and Stripers. Let's do this again next year.

Had a great time meeting new people out there. Kinda sad I had to leave a little early.
Shout out to Jack for putting on this great event and also to Ariel and Bruddah Michael. Wish I could have stayed for the pig though.

Aloha Bruddahs,
Just getting my mojo back after an intense, fun, satisfying and great 1st Striper/Hali Tourney at Pt. San Pablo Yacht Harbor. First, I want to thank the wonderful people at PSPYHarbor; Jack Johnson, Capt. Frank from the home-based charter boat Fury, Robert (Commodore) Edney -President of the PSPYH Sportsman Club, Bonny Dunn (for getting all the beer and drinks) and the entire great community there for making it possible for NCKA members to have a great and memorable mid-summer tournament at this beautiful and special spot on San Pablo Bay.
Jack, that Caja China whole roast pig was to die for and the well-stocked bar and live Rock Band from Pt. Richmond was a nice touch. I was dancing my ass off at the end of the night!! Great way to let it all unwind and celebrate!! That sunset at the Awards Dinner at the Clubhouse was spectacular!! I think that someone posted a pic yesterday.
I wanted to also thank Jack and Robert Edney for making these nice custom- made 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place tournament plaques. Robert Edney custom made the plagues with his special equipment. I asked 1st and 2nd place winners Michael (rnrgeek) and Eddie if they could post a pic of their tournament trophies on NCKA for all to see.
I wanted to also give a special thanks to Captain Frank of the Fury and Jack for taking his boat to SF on Friday to pick up live anchovies for all of us to fish with!! Again, big Mahalo to Capt. Frank for the Friday Night Safety Meeting for sharing your knowledge of the currents, tides and first-time fishing info about fishing in San Pablo Bay area. Capt. Frank told us to watch out for those speeding, monster ferry boats that cut through the channel between the “Brothers” Islands off Pt. Molate. You don’t want to be in the channel when they come flying by. The rooster tail and wake from the big ferry boats are kind of jaw dropping!!!
Late in the morning before the Ebb tide peaked, I had a big strike near the #4 buoy mid-channel, fishing with a 3-way with live bait. I had this big take down and knew I had something big. I was using my go to rod 7’ Trevalla with a Calcutta reel and 50# braid joined at the end with 30# Trilene Big Game mono and I first gave it a lot line to hook up and then when I tried to pull up the fish it took off diving and I was adjusting the drag to keep my rod tip from going underwater. When there was a slack I tried pulling up this monster with all my strength and could not bring it up as it kept diving and stripping my reel. By this time, I was thinking it’s either gotta be a big Hali, shark or sturgeon. I radioed for help to the other guys as I knew I was going to have a problem landing this monster!! Eddie from Richmond (da other Eddie) came buy and after what seemed like a long time, I could pull this fish up and I could see a little bit of a light color and I was already thinking, my first big Hali, I’m gonna take the Grand Prize!!!! This was the strongest take down that I have ever had in my new REVO 13. So. I finally get to see this monster coming into view from the depths and lo and behold it was a big Bat Ray, looked like over 3 feet wide. Got it close to my yak and cut the line!!! I had my fish orgasm of the year!!!After releasing it, it was like oh, “premature ejaculation”, I got my rocks off big time, but no winning fish!!!
Talked to Jack today and for sure will have the Striper/Hali Tournament again in mid-July 2018 and considering planning a Sturgeon Fishing Tournament earlier in the year 2018. Jack and I will keep you informed about dates.
Always great to meet new NCKA Bruddahs for the first time, Ron (weimarian) and family, Michael (rnrgeek) and girlfriend, Ron (newfuturevintage) and wife, Eddie (da man from Marin), da other Eddie from Richmond, Tote from Placerville, Dannarchy from Santa Clara, RockHopper from Santa Rosa, Frenchy from San Jose, HavoctheBeast? TW from Riverbank, CodAlmighty from Rohnert Park and others that I might have missed. Hey Kayak Jack, it was nice to have some time to hang out with you, wanted to have you just be a guest and not do any cooking!! Thanks for all the TACOSHACKS that you do throughout the year for NCKA and HOW!!!
I had a nice talk with “Eddie” from Marin on Saturday night about welcoming/Aloha and Ohana/family. Giving the best to each other, helping each other during difficult times, having fun fishing, but always the big picture being grateful for the generosity of others and for what we have. The goodwill and generosity from NCKA members is no accident, it is part of the fiber and culture of our elders and leaders and it is passed down to all the members.
Mahalo nui loa to the greatest community of kayak fishermen, NCKA Rocks!!!
“All for one, One for All”,
Aloha.
da Bruddah

Hey Michael (rnrgeek),
I was very busy prepping the food on Saturday night and did not get a chance to see your 1st Place plaque that Robert Edney from the Harbor made.
Can you take a close up picture of it and post it on NCKA?
Congrats on hitting the jackpot this weekend!!
Aloha,
da Bruddah
Michael Yamagata
By the way 1st Place Winner-Michael Butler (rmrgeek) : $500
2nd Place Winner Eddie: $300? and 3rd Place- $200

Nick took 3rd place. That guy is a badass fisherman

This sounds like it was a great event and I am sorry I missed out. Da Bruddah's report was fantastic and the part about a fish orgasim made me choke on my beer I laughed so hard.
Thanks for the laughs.

Hey, it looks like the wood is mahogany!!

Great event! Thanks Jack for hosting and BBQ, Capt Frank for the safety/fish tips and live bait, and Michael (Da Bruddah) for helping coordinate this event and making it fun for a newbie like me.
This was my first NCKA event and had to join in on the fun since its so close to me. Launched for a little scouting on Friday afternoon after work. I'm terrible with names so please forgive me until I start meeting you guys more often. Met another member Friday afternoon and we paddled around a towards the point (towards Brothers). Marked a lot of fish and bait in the 8-14ft range and found tons of good structure. Came back to land just in time for the safety meeting, where I met Ariel and was lucky enough to get some tips from him.
Saturday morning, arrived at 7am and OTW by 745am. Saw lots of guys heading towards buoy 4 and the main channel. I haven't done a ton of kayak fishing in the open bay and wasn't quite comfortable going out that far. I didn't feel right bugging anyone to let me follow them cuz we're in a fishing comp, right? Fished the left point but the current was really ripping, so a long paddle back towards the harbor. Fished inside the harbor and just outside the mouth, ranging from 8-15ft. 1st fish was a 12" halibut at about 9am. Paddled and drifted over the same area yielded 12" striper.
By noon, I was out of live bait and sounded like most of everyone was out as well over the radio. Decided to leave to pick up my pregnant wife and let her come watch the 2nd half of the day. Called out on the radio that I'd go to Bay Tackle and pick up more anchovy popsicles and halibut rigs. I literally was on the road at 12:30pm... and I would not return until 2:45pm. The traffic on 580 towards the bridge was so crazy, took me 1.5hr to get back to the harbor. Sorry to anyone who was waiting for bait or tackle from me.
Back on the water for the last half of the incoming. Back drifting at the mouth, yielded another 17.5" striper. Darn, almost a keeper. 4pm, one hour left and I don't see anyone else on the water. Starting to think I'm the only clown out here trying to catch fish. I soon find everyone is passed out, napping, drinking, or waiting for the BBQ. 4:45pm, Jack radioes out if anyone is still out. I fished until the last minute. One last live anchovy and one more drift. nibble nibble and I get a quick take down. In the net and a 13" halibut. Lucky last drift, better than nothing. Go in and enjoy the food, beer, and great company.
Congrats to the winners. My wife definitely approves me spending time away from her and our upcoming baby to fish with you all. I hope to see you guys on the water more often. Thanks for the good times.

Hey Kevin,
It was really great to hook up with you again!! You kind of introduced me to the ocean around Richmond. It was great to meet and talk to your wife and I am so happy for the both of you who are expecting your first baby in 4 mos., a boy!! You are going to be great parents!!
I would love to cook with you sometime. I think that we could come up with an awesome meal!!!
I told Jack that when the Harbor opens their restaurant, we would cook a meal together there. I think that sometimes I like cooking more than fishing!!
Mahalo Bruddah,
Michael

Yes, I did catch 18 Halibut! 10-18" (thanks for thew tip Dustin) The red can must have had a carpet of them! All shorts and one short striper. Traveled 12 mile on my Radar pedal yak.
Twelve divided by eighteen = .6666666666666 mpf..... You are a demon! :smt096 and Emma ate pig brain with me... it was good! :smt045

Hey Jeff,
How was the pig brain. I must have been great because the rest of that roasted hog was to die for.
Sturgeon Tournament at the Yacht Harbor early 2018!!

Great event! Thanks Jack for hosting and BBQ, Capt Frank for the safety/fish tips and live bait, and Michael (Da Bruddah) for helping coordinate this event and making it fun for a newbie like me.
Yeah, it looked like an awesome time. Wish I hadn't had a "time" conflict. :cry3
Kudos to everyone, hope to be there next year.

I apologize for the amount of time it has taken me to write this, however I have been extremely busy and most of my spare minutes have been spent with my family. ALso NCKA was down for a while for me... I dunno what was going on. That being explained;
I wanted to personally thank each and everyone of you folks for making this first event happen smoothly and happily. There were a lot of people who paid for the event and couldn't show or just wanted to donate, so I wanted to throw a special thanks their way as well like Russ from Reno..off the top of my head.
Michael, The Bruddah! You are an amazing person and I am glad that you reached out to help and you and your wife wanting to become part of our group out here, Your thoughtfulness and willingness to bend over backwards for anyone anytime deserves a big shout out of love your way brother. It wouldn't have been the same without ya!
The response I got from the group of owners who heard and saw the event was a great one! They were impressed by how the group was organized and respectful of the land and property. They themselves want to be more involved for the event next year as well!
We now know after doing this event once how we an improve and hone in some things. The campground for next year will be similar, but more organized and we will have more accommodations for access like showers and restrooms(hopefully). We will probably get a larger amount of live bait as we ran a little short and we will most likely have the kayak launch ramp in place (by the sporstmens club).
The future of the club(not the building) is uncertain as of right now, but I have a feeling that the bar or new operator will be willing to sponsor us in a similar way that the club did this year. I will be planning the event much sooner and getting things lined up and tight months prior to the event.
I just wanted to say thank you again to all who participated and came out to experience this place I call home, and I am happy to have you back anytime!
