Hi All,
I spoke with Native, who said they are willing to kick down a Native Slayer Propel 13 to support our Northern California kayak fishing community through a raffle. The funds from this raffle will go directly into PIF, who will set aside the funds to help out NCKA members who may have been affected by the devastating Northern California fires recently. I've heard of at least two NCKA members who have lost their houses, and there are surely others out there.
Anyways, let's cut to the chase:
-Prize will be a Native Slayer Propel 13 - color TBD.
-Raffle Tickets are $20 each
-Raffle Ticket sales end on Sunday, November 12, 2017 at 6PM
-Raffle drawing will be held the evening of Monday, November 13, 2017
-Drawing will be livestreamed through Facebook on my personal page, time TBA
-Kayak will be delivered to Clavey Paddlesports in Petaluma to be picked up
-100% of raffle proceeds will go to the PIF Fire Victims Fund, to be distributed by the A-Hulls at their discretion for NCKA Fire Victims.
If you are interested in purchasing a raffle ticket, please go through the following Paypal link. Please make sure that you can be reached through the name/email address of the Paypal account that you use. If it is not your personal Paypal account, please contact BigJim to let him know so we can have the correct name for the raffle. If you would like to purchase tickets through cash or another method, please contact me and I'll see how we can make it work.
In addition, if you know of any NCKA members who may have been affected by the fires and may need help, please contact BigJim or any member of the PIF team.
Please take a moment to thank Native and Clavey Paddlesports on their social media pages if you get a chance.

Update:
Unexpectedly, I was the winner of the kayak raffle. First I would like to thank BigJim, bmb, Native Watercraft, and Clavey's Paddlesports for putting the raffle together. The money we all donated went for a great cause.
If you you read my introduction (Bay Area Forager)that I posted a few weeks prior to my win you would know that I was only thinking about getting a fishing kayak, and had just started gathering information before jumping into the sport. Well, all of a sudden I had been pushed in a good way into the sport.
Originally I was considering a lighter kayak because of my limited storage options. Based on feedback from this group I was seriously thinking about the Caribbean 14 as one that would fit my plan for primary use in the SF Bay and ocean.
I agonized a lot thinking about whether I should just sell the Slayer 13 and get the Caribbean, or keep the Slayer. I preferred the Slayer but was worried about the additional weight. So over the next few weeks I watched every video I could find on how to store it, and loading kayaks onto cars. I decided that I would be able to keep the Slayer based on what I had watched.
For storage I decided on the Harken hoist system so that I could lift the kayak up to the ceiling in my garage. I had to get it installed with only the Slayer dementions to go by, but it worked perfectly when I finally put it to the test.
Next was how to transport it on my car, a Nissan Leaf. The roofline is pretty low so I decided on a Yakima rack with a kayak sideloader. With this system I am able to get the kayak on and off by myself. The only drawback is that the Nissan Leaf is very aerodynamic and having the kayak on top caused my mileage to plummet.
Before taking it on the water I have signed up for sea kayaking classes 1 & 2 on consecutive weekends in January. I spent my teenage years in canoes so I do have some small boat experience already.
I have been putting together all of the stuff I will need to go out for the first time. So far I have: radio, drysuit, weeleez, pfd, which I purchased new or from craigslist. My free kayak is costing a bunch.
When I went last Friday to pick it up at Clavey's Paddle Sports the first order of business was to affix NCKA stickers to the kayak.
Following are a few pictures:
-
Awesome , can't wait to see some fresh blood on the deck!

Does this mean your MPG went from 48 MPG to 42 MPG :smt044

The Leaf is rated at 124mpg city and 101mpg hwy. But it is electric and the battery is only equal to about 3/4 of a gallon of gas. So my usual range of 75 hwy miles dropped to about 55 miles. I have had it for a little over 6 years and it is a perfect commuter car and good for the bay area. But without fast chargers along the coast places like Timber Cove are out of range. There is a charger at Doran Beach so I am planning on attending Crabfest next month.
