General Talk / Re: Buying first Hobie, any tips?
« on: June 25, 2018, 02:04:58 PM »
A couple of years ago there was a guy I saw several times at Timber Cove with a Sport.
He seemed to do just fine and he was a bigger guy than me.

It may not track as well or be as fast as a Revo, but I wouldn't hesitate to ocean fish in a Sport.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Shimano Trevela for non-jigging
« on: April 27, 2018, 01:35:25 PM »
I've got TVC70ML, TVC66M and TVC66MH.
Usually pair them with an Abu Garcia Revo Beast or Lexa 300.

For rockfish/ling jigging with up to 4 oz. lures I prefer the 70ML - a 30 in. ling puts a good bend in that rod and makes the fight more fun.
For deeper jiggin > 150ft with up to 8 oz. lures I prefer the 66M or 66MH.

I've caught 4 thresher sharks up to 8.5ft long on the 66MH - it's a beast of a rod.

General Talk / Re: sail on Hobie Mirage Outback: thoughts &
« on: April 21, 2018, 10:22:15 PM »
I have a sail I've used with my Revo 13.
I would also install the furler kit, it makes it much easier to furl the sail from your seat.

I've used it without sidekicks on a small lake it's been stable enough to troll for trout, but at times can be a lot to manage as you must be quick to trim the sail if a big gust comes along.

With the sidekicks it is very stable and you can get a lot more speed out of the boat, especially tacking into the wind.

And NowhereMan is correct, the itch is too strong.
I bought an AI 8 months after I got the sail for the Revo.

General Talk / Re: MERGED - Shark attack on yak 3/18- Monterey Bay
« on: May 05, 2017, 09:51:40 PM »
I am curious if anyone had any type of eerie feeling before they were attacked or seen a shark ? I have kayaked on the ocean for a few years now and only once did I have a sense that there was a shark nearby.

Absolutely yes.  Then 5 seconds before I got scwacked I told myself "bullshit, put that out of your mind and peddle on".

Ghan does not post much ,but it`ll be two years in Sept. at Ocean Cove  that he was a recipient of a  "Polaris missile" attack . Flipped him over but no additional action was taken by the "missle''.. his Hobie is blue I think ,the only other guys I know that have met the Landlord ,Adam ,Ben and Joe have paddle kayaks

That story was hard for me to read and my heart was racing while watching the video.

The year I got hit 2 months earlier I had killed 4 sharks over back to back weekends - tasty buggers.

BTW Vic, I have a dune Hobie Revo.  Good luck out there buddy.

Safety First / Re: Flipping PA/Outback right side up
« on: July 13, 2016, 09:58:17 PM »
Thanks for posting the vid.  I like it when people post things about safety, I usually learn a thing or two because so many people on this board have been yak fishing for so long and share their knowledge.

A few more words of kindly constructive criticism if you don't mind.

I've flipped Outbacks, Revos and Adventures a plenty.  In 2 short years of kayak fishing I've become an expert at falling out of a Hobie.  :smt044
Sometimes in 56 degree water with 6-7ft swells.  For me, getting out of the water as quickly as possible with the least amount of energy expended is important.  Practice, practice, practice.

1.  Don't grab the fins - they're too floppy.  Grab at the base and you can easily pull the yak rolling towards you while your other hand grabs the far gunwale to finish the righting.

2.  Trying to re-enter with your legs hanging down below you is a waist of energy.  Kick or float your legs up to just below the surface behind you, get fully extended then give a mighty scissor kick while pulling the boat under you.  Do it too well and you can launch yourself over the other side.  Time it right and it will feel effortless.  It didn't look like you had enough room in that little pool to demonstrate that method.

I'm in, wouldn't miss it.
