I called today off to wait for better conditions since I might be solo and waiting for my dupicate VHF which will have a battery charger to go with my other Standard Horizon HX751.  I like to have the radio on me.  Gas is too much as well as time to get down there and not be able to fish.
As of now maybe tomorrow or sunday.  Tuesday/wednesday next week looks like a good window.

This is driving me nuts.  Im hoping to have someone in Shelter Cove to call so I can have a better idea if the water is fishable. :smt013 :smt013

Back to the topic on hand, scent.  Here in Humboldt many of us bust out our secret scent when things get slow or other times too.  Its not really a secret though its our trademark.  Best fish attractant out there.  I swear by it.  :smt003 :smt005 :smt044

I may have to keep a special reserve on hand...  Domenic fed me one of these the other day and I was floating on air.
So he has been aging those since 2010? I had a couple of them they were tasty then.  I have some Stone Vertical ales that have been aging for ahwile.  I only have 09/09/09, 10/10/10 and 11/11/11.

If you need some I can bring some white oak.  I dont have that many fires here and I have plenty of wood to spare.

i keep 'chivie and krill with me. Can't hurt right?

I forgot about the krill.  Last year while fishing off my boat a buddy brought some really good krill gel that stayed on the bait good.  It also does work good especially when you clean your salmon and find out they have been gorging on krill which is one of their staple foods.

It worked for this guy:  "Pautzke Pro Staffer Joel Shangle with an Alaska King caught mooching herring smeared with Gel Krill"

Looks like a fun and tasty gathering.  I need to try the deli sliced abalone and learn how to prepare the clams like ya'll do because they are numerous and easy to come by 5 minutes from house.  Those pictures of the dishes look mighty delicious

Sometimes I use the Smelly Jelly Anchovy scent if I have it with me.  I use it for rockfish too.  I have noticed the difference while jogging for kings off the jetty and when catching salmon off the Jerry.  An oily scent trail off your bait may increase your chances a little bit.

WD40 sprayed on your flasher to shine it up and scent.   :smt003 :smt044

Today: SE wind 6 to 9 kt becoming S in the afternoon. Periods of rain. Mixed swell...W 3 ft at 9 seconds and SW 2 ft at 15 seconds. Wind waves around 1 ft.

Time to hit the road! :smt004

General Fishing Tips / Re: Ideal net for Salmon?
« on: April 09, 2012, 02:27:04 PM »
Good luck putting a 40lber in that lil net.  If you want the best get a Beckman big fish/salmon net.  It has a weighted sock.  http://www.cabelas.com/product/Fishing/Fishing-Tools/Landing-Nets-Seines%7C/pc/104793480/c/104720580/sc/104427180/Beckman-Big-Fish-Nets/700782.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Ffishing-fishing-tools-landing-nets-seines%2F_%2FN-1100393%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104427180%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253BMMcat104793480%253Bcat104720580&WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104793480%3Bcat104720580%3Bcat104427180

It is a lil too big for the yak though I have used it once on my yak.  A 48" deep sock is ideal and 25"-28" x 30"-36" is what you should use.

Go small and your going to lose a big salmon.  You can always gaff em too as long as you know its a legal king.

According to Stormsurf it looks like a calm day and NOAA's report looks like this for Cape Mendocino to Point Arena:
TUE
S WIND 5 TO 10 KT. WIND WAVES 1 TO 2 FT. W SWELL 2 TO
4 FT AT 10 SECONDS. RAIN.

Strait out in front of Shelter Cove at these numbers the weather is predicted to be:
40.01°N 124.06°W
Tuesday: SSE wind 5 to 8 kt becoming variable and less than 5 kt in the afternoon. Rain. Mixed swell...W 3 ft at 10 seconds and WSW 2 ft at 15 seconds. Wind waves around 1 ft.

Nice hog salmon.  I have yet to get one in the 50s.  Maybe this year :smt003 :smt044

Was that an apex?  The leader looked real short.  Very interesting...

Im sitting here since 4:30 looking at weather sand swell predictions.   It sure looks doable, but Tuesday is looking good too and before we know it we can fish for them here in a few weeks so I guess I will save the fossil fuel and time and catch up on chores around the house while the salmon fatten up some more.

1319
I didnt make it out there due to lack of sleep after watching little people wrestle.  The water looks good tomorrow and I heard someone on this board caught some pink meat.. :smt044

Hopefully I can get to bed early cuz I might do a solo run if these conditions hold.

What he said^.  We will be posting the biggest pacific halibut and hopefully salmon and lings too.

$100 says I score a salmon and ling at 38"+ and a halibut @ 50"+

It wont be the first ling or salmon I have caught over 40" in California.
