Well. I had a e mail awhile back from a lady that was the daughter of Jerry. A friend and a teacher of sorts that was part of So California fishing history between 1950 and till a couple of years ago. I first meet Jerry when I was 12 and fishing on the Sport boat Gentleman out of Paradise Cove above Malibu. A place where Rockford Files were filmed in the Sand Box Bar and grill near the pier. Jim Rockford`s Character always used that as a backdrop under a different name. I was fishing with bait with limited and slow success when he approached me  on the boat and said tie one of these on and cast it to the edge of the kelp put it in gear and let it sink. It was Root beer color and a twin tail bait called the Rubber Duck prior to scampi making them. Bang with in an hour I had 6 bass in the bag between 4 and 8 lbs. He walked up to the bow and said how are you doing. I said with a smile 6 nice ones. He looked and smiled back and proceeded to fish him self in the stern of the boat.  Light Load that day maybe 12 or so.

I limited out with 3 about 7 to 8 lbs each. Almost got Jackpot.  He said what do you think. I said amazing what are these?  On the ride home to the pier I did not belive the catch.   I got to know him as a regular on the boat and formed a fishermen friendship of the young guy and the mentor of sorts. Eating Hamburgers on the way to the Kelp beds and talking techniques each time. He designed many famous Jigs in So California like the BADA BING, Hoodwink and his name sake the Jerry Jig. As well as the Rubber duck I had used which it had a different lead head than any other and the first soft tail jig other than a Bagley Salty  dog or a few mister twisters.  He later sold me the remaining molds to the Rubber duck head and tails knowing I would take care of them. I have made some and sold some here and there. Maybe to a few here. Under the Squidme name now.

I was contacted by his Daughter about some stuff of his and it was noted that I would want them he put an email that I was his man to get this stuff. They are Hook displays from around 1902 to 1910 Of every hook Mustad made for all fishing. One Board is West coast with the early Bullhead hooks and live bait styles. The other is specialty hooks that were used on lures and baits. THERE IS NOTHING NEW IN HOOKS. I believe that even more now other than what its made with.  Jerry and I have had visits when I went to L.A. to sportfish and talk about old days  with him on my way home.  So take a look and enjoy. As some know I collect older things of History this way. These will have a nice Home with me next to reels from 1850 to 1940 to keep them company. Let me know if there is something like this for me to ad to my collection.

Good day of weather and more cod on Squidme flies.

Thanks for looking. Sheepshead and candy corn colors.

Also a local red (Vermillion)caught on the Argo. 24 inch Sand Bass in 350 ft. Strange and never seen one that deep and I have caught over a thousand of them in my sport days down south. Read fish and games research and I think that depth is unheard of. Maybe that's where they go. Green spotted rockfish and the man caught his limit on them.  Caught on candy corn color and Red caught on Copper cod color.

General Talk / Some shrimp flies I have tied
« on: April 14, 2020, 06:06:47 PM »
3/0 hooks and 4/0 hooks. Used to make these for commercial  Rock Cod back in the day we fished 80 to 125 fathoms. These are smaller than the7/0 size or 8/0 size we used to use.  I fished with a Penn 12/0 on a 11 ft Sabre gaff blank made into a rod with rollers. And of course a extension handle.  130 Dacron 75 hook gangion  of which I had 72 reds and Cowcod mixed on one drop. We used to get a ton to a ton and a half a day for 2 guys fishing.  65 cents a pond for reds and other rockfish were 30 cents a pound. Heck Lings were 15 cents and they did not want them.  One day I caught 45 lings up to 44lbs at San Miguel island. All on the Iron one day and a bonus 40 lb Octopus. We had a pinnacle that was not on the charts back then an it was 225 ft and LOADED with lings. I will be selling these later. The gangions are two hooks with snap and swivel and 30 lb Ande main line.

Craigslist  has flyer on there website.  I will be up front . Several items New and recycled will be there. Reel, Lure,  Hooks, Duck decoys, pocket knives, Rods, and other fishing related items. There might even be some discountinued lures there you cant find anywhere else. Or that reel that's a comfort reel they no longer make. Trade, Sell and buy. Also bring that stuff you don't want to sell and buy what you do want. Good way to clear the garage and get something for yourself. Older Lures or vintage items that set in that drawer till your 90 years old and someone finds it there just to be thrown away.  Hope to se fellow NCKA Members there. I will be up front with Some Rockfish jigs, Misc Bass gear, Rods and some reels.  Take care and see you there. Its a good thing to do after all this wet weather of looking out the window at rain.

Thanks  Bud Chaddock
