General Talk / Uni shell transportation
« on: November 01, 2019, 04:57:05 PM »
Firstly, greetings from Austin, Texas.  There is no good lingcod or halibut fishing here.

Secondly, I am too lazy to look up the regs.

As some of you guys know, I am here in Austin for my restaurant startup (www.EbisuAustin.com).
I want some uni shells for decorative pieces.
If it is legal to mail interstate uni shells, I need a box of them, and will pay (again, so long as it is not against regs).

I will await your response... and dream about yakfishing in Cali...

For Sale / For Sale: 2016 Hobie Revo; Sail Kit; and more
« on: February 14, 2019, 09:52:48 PM »
So... I'm selling my Hobie Revo 13.
I haven't posted or yakfished in awhile... to make a long story short, I am moving to Austin next week, but will be in town for a few days each month.  Will be opening a restaurant out there, first one opens in July/August, so hit me up if you are in town then.

I don't have photos yet, as i'll have to get the Hobie Revo out of storage.  The attached photo is from a previous fish report post. I know it helps to have photos, so apologies in advance. If this sounds sketchy, rest assured this is NOT a scam.  Maybe Hojo will vouch for me?  :smt006

Will sell each item separately

SOLD2016 Hobie Revo $1,700
I thinks it's 2016. turbo fins. MD 180 reverse Drive. I bought it and fished it twice (once on the salt, and once on the delta).  I'll have to check the serial # once I get it out of storage. It's stone color. the orange tape on the sides (for visibility) has cabinet liner underneath, so the cleanup job will be minimal.  It comes with the vantage seats.  I also got replacement for the drive pulley thing, but haven't installed it.  The hull is clean inside out.  I put JB Weld on the keel to prevent scratches/wear.

Hobie Sail Kit.
I think I used it once,  I don't remember.  Have a DIY furler I made for it. I'll post photos when I get it.[/s]

Hobie Sidekick Ama SOLD
It comes with the hardware to mount on your Revo

Lowrance Hook 5 (new)
I opened the box, but haven't installed it.

Werner Corryvrecken carbon paddle (will have to check size)
Used it maybe twice...

Bending Branches carbon paddle (will have to check size)
Used it alot when I did fish...

Gonna keep my rod/reels, but probably have lot's of stuff to give away.
I realize it's going to frustrate many of you that I don't have photos yet, but hollar if you have an interest.  I will get it out of storage and get some photos.

P.s. I hope someone has a buddy yak they can let me use when I am visiting CA and want to fish them lings!

Places to Launch and Camp / Places to Launch Near Brannan Island?
« on: November 27, 2017, 11:15:35 AM »
Would like some advice.
I plan on fishing near Brannan Island SRA.  Is it best to launch from Brannan Island SRA, or are there other spots nearby to launch my kayak.  My concerns are: vehicle safety while fishing; launch spots with shorter paddling/pedaling distance to fishing grounds.

I would obviously prefer to paddle an extra mile from a safer parking spot than risk windows being broken.  Give me your two cents. Thx in advance.

A friend treated me to a Fish/Crab combo outing for helping him out with something.
The boat was California Dawn, and 30 of us left Berkeley Marina to very nice weather and went out to the Farallons.
We limited on RF and crab.  A lot of good-sized rockfish, and all the crabs were jumbos.
I would have paid, just for the crabs alone.
The rockfish action left much to be desired, because it wasn't as "fun" as fishing from a yak. Using a 24oz sinker at depths of 200+ feet... just wasn't as fun as using a light rod from a yak at lesser depths. On the boat, it was just heavy lifting... and the fish felt similar regardless of size when pulling it up. Once barotrauma sets in, pulling up the fish was just feeling the weight of your sinker I think.  But the limits were nice, and fishing with a buddy is always a plus.

Photos of my friend; Crabs; birds; and catch

So, my FF won't power up, and it's not a battery issue.  Since I don't know jack about electronics, I thought I'd get y'all's advice before going out and buying a replacement.

I went diving at Albion last week, and rolled my yak. FF wiring was securely connected to the FF, and don't think it hit any rocks in the rollover.  My battery was stored in the center hatch of my Revo 13, in a dry bag (dry bag was NOT clipped on to make it watertight).  Also, the wiring didn't have a fuse.  After the rollover, I don't remember anything about the FF.

A week later, I went crabbing and wasn't able to power on my FF, with a full battery charge.
I'm guessing I need a new FF, but would like to hear your thoughts, advice, or any "told you so" stuff.  Thanks.

Hudson River kayaker who let her fiance drown sentenced to prison

Angelika Graswald's case was puzzling from the beginning. And now it has ended, still essentially a puzzle.
It started on a windy evening in April 2015. Graswald and her fiance, Vincent Viafore had a few drinks, then decided to go kayaking on the Hudson River. At some point, Viafore's boat capsized and he vanished under the turbulent waters. Graswald paddled against the current, out of reach. His body was found weeks later.
At first, it seemed like an accident. But after Graswald gave a series of conflicting and callous statements about Viafore's death in a police interrogation, prosecutors in Orange County, New York, charged her with second-degree murder. They said she wanted out of the relationship and had sabotaged his boat in hopes of killing him. She also had a financial motive, they alleged: his death would have given her a shot at his $250,000 life insurance policy.

The Hitchcock-like intrigue brought national attention to the case. The CBS News show "48 Hours" devoted an entire episode, titled "Death on the Hudson," to dissecting the relationship between Graswald and 46-year-old Viafore, and investigating the tactics police used during her interrogation.
Graswald, 37, and her defense attorneys insisted on her innocence, saying police had coerced incriminating statements out of her. But in July, shortly before the case was set to go to trial, Graswald pleaded guilty to criminal negligent homicide, admitting that she had removed a drain plug from his kayak, knew that a locking clip on one of the paddles was missing before they went out. She also said she knew he was at risk because he had been drinking, had left shore without a life jacket and that she did not help him as he flailed in the water.
On Wednesday, Graswald was sentenced to up to four years in state prison, as the Associated Press reported. She could be paroled before the end of the year, having received credit for time-served.
The sentencing closes the books on the case, but seemed to leave a number of issues unresolved.
In court, Judge Robert Freehill said the apparent sabotage of Viafore's kayak wasn't the main issue. Rather, he said, it was Graswald's inaction as Viafore struggled in the cold, choppy waters and her failure to "perceive a substantial risk."

"Was it removing a plug from the kayak, which appears to have been done months ago? Was it tampering with the clip on the paddle? Not really," the judge said, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal. "It was the immediate acts of you being in your (kayak) and Vincent floundering in the water and you not taking any steps to try to help him."
Freehill added that Graswald's self-absorption was a factor in Viafore's death. "You could have walked out on Vinny if you were unhappy," he said, "rather than whatever it was in your mind that led to removing the plug and the other acts you took."
None of the parties signaled they were pleased with the outcome.
"I loved Vince very much and miss him terribly," Graswald said in a statement through her lawyer, Richard Portale, according to the Associated Press. "I don't believe I was treated fairly. This entire process was incredibly one-sided and unjust."
"I am not a murderer," she said. "I've said that from the beginning. If I could do anything to bring Vince back, I would."
Viafore's relatives also expressed disappointment.
"As far as I'm concerned, we did not get justice," his mother, Mary Ann Viafore, told NBC New York.
His sister, Laura Rice, read a victim impact statement before the judge issued the sentence, imploring him to give Graswald the maximum punishment.
"My brother did not deserve to have his life end this way," Rice said, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal. "Our family feels Angelika should be held accountable for the actions she has admitted to . . . a short, four-year-sentence does not seem just. Serving a portion of that sentence seems even more unjust."
"When I think of my brother's last moments alive," Rice added, "I think of the pain he must have endured and I visualize him trying to survive hypothermia in the freezing cold river, confused and not understanding why the woman who said she loved him and wanted to marry him did nothing to help him."
Graswald's defense attorneys had previously argued that police coerced statements out of her during an 11-hour interrogation in 2015. They also said that removing the kayak plug would not have caused it to fill with water, and that rough waves could have more easily caused it to capsize. They also noted that it was Viafore's own decision not to wear a life jacket and that his blood alcohol level was .06.
Graswald, a Latvian immigrant, could face deportation after her sentence is complete. She was the main beneficiary on Viafore's life insurance policy, under which she still stands to gain $250,000, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal. She could take legal action to claim those assets.

Missed the opener due to honey-do lists, so going out tomorrow at HMB around 6am (to beat commute traffic, not because I am an early riser) :smt003.  The office can wait. Company welcome.

Report:

I will not sleep in again.
I will not sleep in again.
I will not sleep in again (x98)

Woke up at 4am, decided to sleep in, thought about going into the office, but since the car was already loaded the night before, left the house at 8am for HMB.  A 60 minute drive without traffic took me 118 minutes in morning commute traffic.  Arrived at 10am, unloaded, and pedaled out.  Then I remembered that I left my rod/reel at the unloading zone.  Dokes!

I will not forget my rod again.
I will not forget my rod again.
I will not forget my rod again.

Returned to harbor, got my rod/reels and dropped my 2 pots at 11am. Pushed the power button on my FF and nothing.  Pushed it again, and nothing.

I will check my battery BEFORE launching.
I will check my battery BEFORE launching.
I will check my battery BEFORE launching.

Actually, I charged it the night before, so I don't know what's wrong.  Will have to check tomorrow, as I am too tired right now to give a sh**

In prior years, opening day (or week) meant limits by the 1st or 2nd pull.  Today, I got 4 dungies in 5 hours... with 25+ shorts, and about 5 rock crabs. Didn't have my FF, but based on rope pulls, I'm guessing I was in 45 feet, and then in about 30 the final hour I was there.  I was shocked and disappointed beyond belief.  Even in late season, I've been able to get 6 or 7, and have never NOT limited at season's start.

There were lot's of bait around  (very small chovies), so I fished my sabiki around the bait and was able to get 3 mullets.  Dropped one down to try for halibut, but I think it got taken by a seal. Lot's of seals around... which made me "feel" better in light of the landlord sighting recently.  The remaining 2 mullets will be tomorrow's dinner. The family enjoyed the dungies, and hoping my rockfish/crab combo trip next week will have better results.

Hope you guys do better than me, and wishing you jumbos and full pots!
