Edit: Sold

I bought this new from Headwaters in 2017, used it 5 or 6 times then bought a used Outback and have kept this around as a spare/loaner. It has been hanging in my garage for over 2 years now. i take it down every once in a while and wash it and put it back up.

It has some scratches on the bottom from use, but it is in generally very good condition. The only modification is a small hole in the center console so i could run the transducer cable through, the ducer is "Gooped" in on the inside of the hull. Lowrance Hook2-4X GPS/fish finder comes with it, i think i even had a spare battery i can throw in. It includes the matching 230cm paddle, seat and 1ea Scotty rod holder.

This is a great kayak, 14'8" long by 30" wide and has the "wheel in the keel" so it is easy to move around. I just need the room in my garage to store my new one that i am building right now.

NCKA price of $700? If no interest then i'll post it up on CL in a few days for more.

Craftsmen's Corner / Quarantine Kayak Build
« on: May 17, 2020, 05:59:40 PM »
A little back story first. I have wanted to build some sort of boat for a long time, but i have too many hobbies/projects already to justify it. While i'm still working full time right now, i wanted a non-house related project to work on in my limited free time. I have been kayak fishing for a few years now with a Feelfree Moken 14 and then a Hobie Outback. I generally end up fishing the Sonoma Coast or the delta around Rio vista. The Hobie does well, but it is a bit of a tank and is a pain to pedal more than a mile or two from the launch. Hopefully this build will combine the best of both the long slender Moken 14 and the mirage drive from the Hobie. Anyway, on to the pictures:

Cutting panels and epoxying them together:

I bought one of the Hobie Mirage Drive Wells for the inflatable boats and will use this as the drive well. It is cheaper to buy this entire pieces than it is to buy just one of the "click-n-go" mounts for the regular boat and i would still have to build a drive well. Hopefully this will help speed up the build.

I bought the Bixpy steering unit that they sell to use with their little electric motors. I plan to use this will a Hobie Twist-n-Stow rudder.

Stitiching:

Mock up with the seat from my Outback for reference. I plan to use a Vibe Hero seat ($100 versus $500 for the Hobie seat)

The vee of the hull prevents the Drive well from sitting all the way at the bottom of the hull.

So i trimmed the drivewell down slightly

Then i cut out an oval piece of plywood to match the drive well and grafted it into the hull to give me a nice flat place to glue down the drive well once the interior has been glassed.

This is where i'm at today, ran out of time while filleting the inside. will wrap that up this week and fair the inside and prep for interio glass later this week or next weekend.

General Talk / Lost fish finder... learn from my mistake
« on: August 12, 2018, 06:46:08 PM »
I transport my kayak in the bed of my pickup, which is nice because I can rig it up at home and all I have to do is slide it out onto the cart when I get to the launch spot. My Hook4 FF is on a ram mount with a 1.5" ball in a short section of track.

Last night I was loading up in the dark and didn't feel like fiddling with the power/transducer cables so I just stuck the FF onthe ball and tightened down the clamp. All seemed good.

Just as i was stepping into the kayak out in the delta this morning at 630am i realized the FF wasnt there. And neither was the ball. Which means that the little t-bolt loosened up, the ball slid out of the track and I lost the FF head somewhere between Dixon and Rio vista. :(

If I had connected just one of the cables it would have acted like a leash and held on to the FF.

I loaded up and retraced my drive all the way home and back to Rio Vista but didnt find it.

Cliff notes, dont trust your track mounted accessories on bumpy roads. Hopefully this might save someone else from the same fate. On the bright side, I upgraded to a Hook 5, should be here in a few days. Lol

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Montezuma 12/10/17
« on: December 10, 2017, 08:56:59 PM »
Report: My buddy Matt and I launched out of Belden's at about 8am today. Just before the high tide. Mostly with our eyes set on cruising around, checking it out and possibly bringing home a striper or two.

The bite was non existent for us until the outgo started going strong. We were soaking sardines in 15-30ft of water.

I had one bite for the day, Matt had 3 or 4 with 1ea 24" striper to the boat. Not bad as it was only his 3rd fish ever and his first "keeper."

Weather was cold in the am. A slight breeze picked up, but the sun was warm. I think we saw 6 other kayaks and 1 canoe out there today, pretty good showing for the non-motorized crowd.

Hey there, I've been lurking/reading for a while now. My buddies and i have bought kayaks over the last few months and have been fishing throughout the delta. We planned a weekend that we could all get away together and made camping reservations at Albion for this weekend. We've got all the gear (thanks to this awesome site). Now that we are getting close we are checking forecasts and watching the weather, tides, swells as best we can.

I've been party boat fishing a handful of times and caught my share of rockfish so i am not new to the fishing part of it, but i am new to kayaking on the ocean.

Magicseaweed.com (closest location is Point Arena, right?) is showing 1' surf on sunday, which i take as a good sign.

Weather forecast and tides seem good.

We plan to drive up Saturday morning, and fish if we can, explore the river with the significant others and then get up early on Sunday and get out on the ocean.

If anyone else is up there, feel free to say high, we'll have a blue Outback, a Blue Tarpon 120 and my Lime green Moken14.

If anyone has any input on the forecast that is a red flag, feel free to chime in.

We should have a full report of the adventure when we get back on Monday.

Introductions / Howdy
« on: August 16, 2017, 10:28:00 PM »
Hey all,

Phil from Dixon here. Grew up fishing from PB's and shore all throughout the delta and the sierras. I've been fishing out of a little 9' sit in kayak for a bit and am looking to get something larger to eventually take out on some bigger water (ie, the ocean).
