General Fishing Tips / Re: Advice for keeping dungeness fresh
« on: November 28, 2023, 10:25:49 AM »

Thanks for the crab tongs link!  I had the same question regarding temperature.  The cool late november days and evenings made storing this tank in the garage pretty much perfect.  I doubt the water fluctuated much between 50 and 60.

The crab tongs are a real finger saver.  I never get pinched by the crab that I’m grabbing.   It’s always one of his other buddies in the cooler that always seems to get me.

A recent Youtube video I saw mentioned that doing this also allows the crabs to purge whatever they had been eating and you get cleaner crab butter as a bonus with the fresh crab.  I personally can't wait until I cook it most times, finding the wind down waiting for them to be ready one of the best parts  :smt003.

I can confirm that this is true.  The crabs definitely come out a lot cleaner after the soak.

Thanks for the update.  I didn’t get a chance to post and say that I do this all the time because by the time I get home, rinse off all my gear, and put it away, I’m usually too tired to cook crab.   The only difference is that I use a plug in fish tank bubbler so I don’t have to worry about batteries.

I have a power outlet in the back of my truck, so I use it on the drive home as well.   I transport my catch in a cooler full of sea water with the bubbler chugging away.  Been doing this for many years.  It may be overkill, but it keeps the dungies super lively.   Your experience with how lively and aggressive they are when you finally get around to picking them up is the same as mine.   I got pinched so many times that I eventually bought and use a pair of crab tongs that I got from Amazon.

That sounds like a great system for keeping them fresh. Do you cool the water at all? How well does it work when it is warm out?

That’s mainly why I use my big cooler instead of just a bucket.  The cooler keeps the water cool on hot days, but it is so rare that I fish for dungies when it’s warm.  And, I usually get water at the end of one of the piers near the boat ramp instead of at the beach.   The water at the beach usually has so much sand in it.

Reporting back, the crabs were all very healthy after overnight.  They were in 20 gal of seawater in a 27 gal bin with a bubble box aerator from Amazon going on fresh batteries through a PVC to the bottom all night.  The crabs were also very active.  I had to fish them out a bit cause they were striking at me when I reached in.  Lol. They are all cooked and cleaned now.  Hope everyone has a great thanksgiving!!

These should not be occurring anymore.  It seems it got fixed with the recent DNS fixes.  Is anyone still seeing the annoying popups?

Thank you!   I’m glad to hear that you guys did not do it on purpose.

Nice. Thanks for confirming.

My salmon IDing while the fish is in the water is not well enough for me to gaff. I unfortunately still rely on looking at the gums. I do try and net safely and return to the water with as little handling as possible if not legal.

FWIW, this is the method I use to ID salmon on the water.  (Tail method.)

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: When is a 2-speed reel worth it?
« on: March 01, 2023, 03:06:00 PM »
I once lost what felt like a HUGE ling on a nautical day on the water because I got lazy and used the lower gear on my 2-speed reel.  I had it hooked up, and I took my time slowly brining it to the surface.  Unfortunately, when I crested a rather large swell, the lower gear wasn’t fast enough for me to keep tension on the line while going down the backside of the swell.  In that short amount of time where I lost tension, what felt like my PB ling spit the hook.

I still love that Daiwa Saltist 2-speed lever drag reel, but I never used the lower gear again after that incident.

you learn something new every day...today I learned that Whale breath= Rotten Broccoli!

That was an incredible video, thanks for posting/sharing

I learned that personally in HMB when a pod of humpbacks were there while I was trying to catch salmon.  My friends said I was super lucky to experience that.  I didn’t feel so lucky at the time with the stinky breath and one breaching a few times near me.  I started to paddle in until I saw a giant mouth bigger than my kayak surface at the harbor entrance.  It makes for a great story now, but at the time, it was kind of a high pucker factor.

CA Regulations / Re: Wildlife Violator Compact

So, is the agreement between 49 States or 47?  It says 49 at the beginning and California + 46 other states later in the comment.

Answer: It turns out that it’s 48.  Apparently, only Hawaii and Mass are not participating.

Woah!  What a story!   Glad everything turned out OK.

I’ve been caught in the middle of a lightning storm on my motorcycle with bolts landing on both sides of the road around me as I was riding full throttle trying to get to the small patch of blue sky directly ahead of me in hopes of being able to outrun the storm.

I can only imagine the helpless feeling of experiencing the same thing except being on the water with no motor.

With the gaining popularity of trolling motors on kayaks, would it be possible to add a trolling motor category instead of a complete ban on motors?

Just a thought.  I was going to sign up until I saw “no motors” in the rules.

It has been discussed before and one of the main issues is where do you draw the line?

If I can put a trolling motor on a kayak or bixbie or torqueedo is there a power cut off? And if I can have a 160 lb thrust trolling motor why can’t I just put a gas motor on it? And if I put a gas motor on my 16 foot AI why can’t I just use my 16ft aluminum? Or my solo skiff?

I am open to the discussion, but it usually leads to more questions than answers. And then you get into “well what is a kayak?” Is a Hobie PA 14 with 360 drive really a kayak? Is a x brand superbasser 5000 really a kayak?

The easiest line to draw has been human power. I know the sport has evolved and motors are popular, but I would be hesitant to go all in on motors and have non motorized anglers feel like they are at a disadvantage.

So I guess currently (for 2023) no motors rule will stand, but we can discuss it for a future option.

Thanks for the explanation.  I totally understand.  Good luck to everyone this year.
