Thanks for the info on Paradise Cay and Paradise park.  Most likely I will be in one of those two places on Sunday.  I will PM you guys my number in case you want to meet up.

Tight lines everyone!

Thanks again guys.

Yes unfortunately it looks like Sunday forecasts are deteriorating.  For you local guys (I'm assuming you guys are local in the area), I don't see a reason for you to go out Sunday.  For me though I will make my way down to SF Bay on Sunday and play it by ear.  Worst case scenario is I end up drinking beers in my hotel room Sunday and prep for a daybreak launch on Monday when conditions are better.  I've fished "bay" areas in Texas in 15-20 mph winds and although I didn't feel compromised with safety, it was a pain in the ass to fish even in a Hobie.  Maybe I'll fish afternoon/evening on Sunday depending on how well the wind subsides through the day.

In ARW are there halibut within the rockwalls?  That area could provide cleaner water in those conditions.  Paradise looks to be the best choice if west wind is a concern.  Does anyone know where to fish if I launched in Paradise?  Also, I can't seem to find a kayak launch or public boat ramp in that area?  Does anyone have experience launching there?

Thanks for the responses guys.  Where do kayaks launch in Alameda?  I assume this is a good choice cause of the breakwall?

I would've thought Oyster Point would be sheltered from a west wind (just because the land is to the west), but I'll trust your call so thanks for that heads up.

I am planning on fishing the SF bay this coming Sunday and Monday.  I am driving in from Reno and I have a hotel for Sunday night in Richmond.  Initially I was going to fish for halibut with a kayak off the Berkeley pier both days, but since Sunday morning forecast looks a little windy now, I was wondering if it'd make more sense to go somewhere else in the Bay that day to shelter myself from the west wind a little bit.  Oyster point comes to mind.  Does anyone else have any ideas?

Also wondering about water clarity after the recent rainstorm.  I'm hoping enough time will have passed.

PM me if you want to meet up.  Also willing to hear about any ideas and thoughts.  Thanks in advance

I'm thinking of investing in a gopro to mount on my kayak while fishing.  Is there a model that's recommended over others?  I would like to be able to take pictures and videos that I can post on youtube.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!

I really appreciate the wave of responses from you guys.  Makes me all the more excited to go fishing.

Forecasts for this coming weekend look a little bit rough.  I look at swellinfo.com and I imagine 7 ft swells are a no go no matter where you launch from.  I may look into going into SF bay instead

Hey guys,

I plan on driving down to Monterey Bay April 6th for the weekend.  I kayak fished offshore Gulf of Mexico and have made some freshwater trips in the Tahoe area when I moved here.  I've been doing my research but hoping that I'd cross paths with someone whos also fishing.

A couple questions I have off the bat for the Monterey area:

What do people wear?  I know the water is cold and could prove dangerous in case of an 'unlikely' turtling out in open water.  Flipping in the surf zone shouldn't be that dangerous since I'd be close to shore.  Im more concerned about far from shore.

Speaking of surf zones, any pointers for beach launching and landing?  Out in Texas the Gulf produced short-period swells which made it harder to get in in between them.  I see the swell periods are much larger here which to me equates as longer periods in between crashing waves.  Is surf in Santa Cruz and Monterey generally light where you have land to the west?

I've seen a lot of people online jigging around structure and kelp.  I have sonar and am excited to find structure with it.  Is anyone trolling for anything in Monterey?  Either on the surface or with a bomber down in the water column?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hello everyone,

I moved to the Reno/Tahoe area in August 2017 from Houston TX.  I brought my Hobie Outback with me and would love to get it in both salt and freshwater.  I have a lot of experience taking the kayak out in the bay system and offshore to the rigs in Southeast Texas.  Even though I'll be doing mostly freshwater fishing in the lakes around me, I'm looking forward to making weekend trips to Monterey Bay for some BTB action.  There's a similar forum that I joined in Texas and it helped me learn a lot about fishing as well as hooked me up with some buddies who would join me.  I look forward to learning from you guys and joining you out on the water.
