If you like the clip on Tracrac then I would also consider the Thule Xsporter. Also a clip on but the Thule has the ability to raise and lower. These can be had on craigslist used for 300-500

http://www.rackoutfitters.com/blog/thule-500xt-xsporter-pro-bed-rack-for-9915-toyota-tundra-pickup-trucks/

Ive had cheap racks and the 1000lb rated tracrac and I can tell you that it is a different driving experience when youre second guessing the rigidity of your 200 dollar rack carrying your 2000 dollar kayak.

If it were me, I would get a camper shell with a rack on top. Imagine loading up your kayak and stealth camping at the launch for an early start? That 8 ft bed sound roomy..

that thule xsporter looks awesome.  but it is a little more than what i'd like to spend for this truck.  maybe if i had a nicer/newer model truck i would definately consider it.

im not interested in campers at the moment, as i need the bed for hauling stuff.  but it does seem nice to have a place to sleep when going to ncka events and stuff.  do they make campers or at least tonneau covers that would be compatible with the clamp on tracrac or thule xsporters?

hey thanks for the find.  i was looking at that a few days ago, its a deal, but i dont think i will go with the track version.  i prefer the clamp on.  i would check it out however, if the seller was a bit closer to san jose.

The slide version is the awesome the rails stay on but the racks slide right off and they have locking knobs.takes less than a minute to put on or take off the racks.

have you thought about using a roof rack instead?  might be easier to load your yak solo....lift/push kayak into truck bed, then lift/push on to roof rack.  unless you really need a rack for lumber or work.

^^ That was my thought too.

If you have the bed extender that can flip up to meet the top of the cab, then you can just run one roof rack bar on the back of the cab. Should let you also use any bed cover you want I believe.

I went through the same process about a year ago.  I ended up going with the Thule Xsporters (got some nice ones used for a good deal).  I think in an ideal world I would have a campershell.

The ability to camp in the truck and keep messy / dirty / smelly fishing gear in the bed of the truck rather in the cab is really appealing to me.

But, I was hesitant to pull the trigger on the camper shell because 1) they are much more expensive, 2) Like you, I did not want to lose the functionality that the bed of the truck provides.  Of course you can always take the camper shell off if needed, but that is sort of a cumbersome undertaking and then you need a place to put the shell.

In the future I think I will definitely go the camper shell route, but for now, the Xsporters have done their job just fine and they look great.

This is what I am looking at for my 2016 F-150, I don't like the way a shell looks, the racks are removable and still have the cover which opens in sections and you can use the entire bed if needed for tall items. Cover locks with the locking tailgate, so has some security. Not sure if I will do spray on liner or the bedrug.

On my tundra I personally love my trac rac which I picked up off Craigslist for 300. You can adjust the rack accordingly to accommodate for you hatches on you kayak. Plus my wife hates racks on trucks so if we are taking it up to the mountains or something I just slide them off with ease and she's happy! Trac rac also has kayak holders that slide into the rails. I have not bit the bullet I. Them and Santa didn't bring them but I think they run about $70 for them.

Cheers
Nick

so i spent weeks looking for used tracrac but no luck.  went out and got the brand new tracrac tracOne rack that clamps on for 309 plus tax at home depot.  it was pretty much the best deal i could find.  installed it today and im happy with the results.  loaded my kayak and it was almost as i had imagined, doable, however the rack scratched some of the plastic, so ill have to get some padding for it.  the clearance is about 5 inches and the front hatch of the thresher kisses the roof of the cab.  a little padding should fix that problem as well.

the truck i got at a great deal  although its a reg. cab, base model v6, i got it for about the same price i paid for my kayak.  plus a couple hundred for smog and minor repairs.  (previous owner thought it needed major repairs so he sold it to me)

Gets the job done and doesn't sound like that bad of a home depot price. Are those kits supplied with some type of tamper proof Torx bolts vs reg. hex?

it doesn't have a tamper-proof or security device, just the hex screws, 1 for each clsmp so 8 total if someone really wanted to steal it.  but i do have something im planning to put on to make it harder to steal for thieves, but not impossible.  if anyone knows of a type of lovk for these, im definately interested.
