For Sale / SOLD 2012 Hobie AI + Malone Microsport Trailer $3200
« on: September 13, 2020, 02:11:15 PM »
Hey everyone, we are going to head out of state to hunker down with family for a bit.  It doesn't make sense to pay for storage for my setup, so I'm looking to sell.
2012 Hobie Adventure Island.  Everything works great, always rinsed off after a day on the water.  The Malone Microsport trailer is 9 mo old with very little wear on the tires and comes with a spare tire.  I can take some more pictures for anyone serious or you can come check it out.  I live in Martinez.  $3200 for everything.

Includes:
AKAS, AMAS + Hobie Case
Mirage Drive
Sail + case
Dagger board
Carbon fiber Hobie paddle

Extras:
I have some custom Scotty mounts that attach to the AKAs.
Garmin Striker fish finder + battery + transducer
Extra pins for rudder and AKAs
Bilge pump

I'm wanting to find a place for Father's day to take the family mostly to swim and sail the AI around.

I've never been, but I was thinking Berryessa?  I know some of the boat launches are open, but are there any areas of the lake people would recommend for wading and grilling?  It says the following areas are closed:
Oak Shores Day Use Area
Smittle Creek Day Use Area
Administrative Office and Visitor Center
Tent camping and lodging

Wanted To Buy / two kayak trailer
« on: December 15, 2019, 07:46:55 AM »
I would like to buy a trailer I could turn into a Hobie AI hauler.  Preferably something that can haul two kayaks.  My budget is around $500-700.

For Sale / Jackson Kraken 2016 13.5ft (Sold)
« on: December 11, 2019, 12:22:16 PM »
I picked up a Hobie AI and it's time to part with my Kraken.  The family says the AI doesn't look as cool.
This kayak is a lot of fun and one of the most stable kayaks I've gotten to paddle.  The chair is great comfortable on long paddles and this thing has a ton of easy access storage.
Includes padded deck, yackattack rails near your feet, and the rudder setup.
Condition is good some scratches on the bottom as you would expect from a 3 year old.  I've always stored this in my garage hanging up in webbing and rinsed off after every use.

I'm asking $750.

Located in Martinez.

I've had a Jackson Kraken for almost two years now but recently joined Cal Sailing Club and enjoying it.  Now I've gone and combined sailing with kayaks by picked up this 2012 AI from Craiglist.  I'm dying to get it on the water, but have plenty of questions in the meantime.

(1) I was reading the rudder pins can break and was going to pick up some extra.  What other things would you recommend getting (besides the obvious pumps, etc)

(2) How do most of you carry crab pots on it?  The trampoline or back?  I figured the trampolines would get in the way when you launch and paddle.

(3) I read when you land in any surf to, stow everything, hold on to a leash from behind and walk it in using your body as a anchor.  Thoughts?

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Why clean your reels?
« on: September 15, 2018, 05:06:43 PM »
I have a Penn Pursuit II and rinse it in fresh water after every trip for the last 3-4 years.  While I've never taken it apart, the last trip out the anti-reverse just stopped working.  I ended up disassembling it all and saw a lot more salt build up than I would have expected.  After cleaning it all up it was nice to see how the internals functioned, however I never could get the anti-reverse to work.  It looks like it's just a nut that locks, but ohh well.  Even if I got it working the whole reel isn't as smooth as it used to be.  Fortunately Penn is discontinuing the model and I picked up a backup for $30  :smt003

It also seems like I need to be doing comprehensive tear downs anytime the reel takes a dunk in the future  :smt009

While, I've gotten to take my Kayak out a number of times to the Shadowcliffs and Bodega Bay, I have yet to catch a fish (lots of crabs though).  I got a campsite at Wright's Beach for the weekend and want to try Ocean or Timber Cove on one of the mornings.  If anyone is going there and doesn't mind me tagging along, I'd appreciate the company.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / My phone and its great adventure
« on: March 31, 2018, 09:14:30 PM »
My phone and car key is currently in Bodega Bay floating around in a dry bag.  Unfortunately I couldn't GPS track it until I got home (1.5 hours away) and was on a "trusted device".

Anyways, while loading crab traps it got knocked off, and by the time I noticed, there wasn't a chance of finding it.  The wind picked up from the NE about 12 mph and I didn't wanted to get back to shore with my haul.  Which was enough to cook and feed the family once they showed up and rescued me.

I'll keep doing checking on it until it runs out of battery.    I doubt it will be recovered, but stranger things have happened.

Introductions / Hello from a boatless lurker
« on: December 06, 2017, 10:31:16 PM »
Hey,
I'm Taylor and I moved my family to the Walnut Creek area from Albuquerque this year.   For work, I'm a computer scientist and work on supercomputers.  I enjoy surf fishing and fly fishing, but I rarely catch anything  :smt011.  I've been fishing at Limantour mostly, but so far have only gotten a few dungeoness with snares and a lot of seals just watching me from the water.  I'm hoping that getting a kayak will open up additional types of fishing for me -- and it just sounds fun.  Right now I'm just trying to learn more about it before I take the plunge.

Edit: added a picture of my "big" catch in Texas
