I've heard of people using JB weld to protect the bottom of their yaks from wear.
What is your thoughts on this?
and,
which JB to use?
Thanks for any input/info.

I've been using JB Weld (Kwik Weld) on my yaks for years, and it's prevented wear on the hull bow/stern as I load/unload my yak from the roof rack. It's awesome, and I hardly have a need to re-apply it.

I have. It is amazing how strong that thing is to abrasion.
The original JB weld.

This stuff is kind of spendy, but it works great to protect the hull, and has lots of other uses:

Can you show us a picture of how and where you use that?
thanks

I seem to remember that FuzzyTom posted some good pictures of this too, but I’m too lazy to search for it now...

On my previous OB hull (Returned for the dreaded cracked drive well) I laid a patch of HOT glue on the wear area at the back of the hull. The way I loaded it in the bed of my truck, lent to the bottom being drug about a foot over ground till I could lift and shove in the bed rest of the way. I wised up after I saw the wear and started laying a towel down in the "Drag area" The hot glue is not hard by any measure, but it was being worn instead of the hull.
My current hull, I have not put any form of hull shield on, simply lay a towel down.

I've forgotten if I posted pics, can't locate them, but it has held up pretty well. It gets scraped away, but a little at a time. I recall that I used masking tape to keep it from running all over, but it wasn't very runny, and I pulled the tape off before it completely set up - making nice straight lines - as if that matters on a 14- year-old kayak!

Ok,
So I have a little situation,
While in Eureka yesterday, stopped by Pearson's hardware to get some JB.
Apparently, JB has become a big thing and now there is no such thing as standard (over a dozen different types)
So,
I narrowed it down to these two.
Any suggestion as to which would have the best wear protection?
Help a brother out!

Not one iota of difference between those two...
-
I don't know... I'm having a hard time deciding between the two.
-
What was the middle choice again??
-
heh heh he said "IOTA"

Wait ?!?!?!? What two?????? Any two anywho I guess!

Not sure what happened to the pic,
but here it is again,
Still can't figure out what the difference is.
Ended up using the one with "Steel Reinforcement" and hopefully it will wear better.

Color and chemical composition?
-
“Steel reinforced”. Does that mean it will rust in saltwater?

Not sure about rust,
but,
I preferred a dark grey over a white for the bottom of the boat

I’m interested in how well it holds up and if it holds well to the kayak material. Please keep us updated on the results after a few uses.

Here's the old thread which includes pictures of someone else's kayak with JB Weld, and my description of how I did it. I'd forgotten how sticky it was to apply, but that was good, because it wasn't runny. I don't think I've re-applied it since then, though it has scraped down to a thiner layer now.
