Does anyone know what tools are required to make a welded ring?
Has anyone tried to make their own?

I would like to replace the rings on some of my jigs.

I don't think welded rings are needed unless you're using some super heavy line.  You might try soldering a split ring together though.  That'd keep it from uncoiling to some extent.

Agree with Prom here.  I don't think we can get enough leverage off a yak to open up a split ring.

Some people don't like their line to get in the groove of a split ring if they are tying to one at the top of a jig.  I could see how it might fray the line causing it to break.  I've never worried about it though.

I've had good luck silver soldering homemade stainless rings made from welding rod. Most of the "Iron" jigs in SoCal have rings that are brazed with brass rod. Both methods require high heat, usually a torch, propane or oxyacetalene torch, clean metal, and a good flux. This was on tackle used for larger fish, tuna etc.Although ringed hooks work real nice on big live baits.           Mark

If you want bullet proof just replace with some high quality Stainless Steel split rings and use a big duo-lock snap, I use this on a PB with 80 lb spectra and never had one fail. I agree with PS no need on a yak for anything that strong, if you are fishing hard your just gonna leave it on the bottom anyway. If you can't break it with your 2 hands you will never break it fishing from a yak. Just my 2 cents

I ended up with about 10+ opened split rings this year.  Its not the leverage on the yak, but getting them strangely twisted on the jig or lure you are using.  I really noticed it with crank baits this year for some reason. By the way the fish were hooked (Mostly stripers, and a few calicos), they hit the lure from the front, this pinned the split ring and twisted it right open.  I lost quite a few fish and couldn't figure out why the hook was missing.  Then got lucky- and had one only partially opened.
