I now have a 10wt with a full sink shooting head Im going to bring to GS8. Now, I need to get some flies. Ive never used the fly gear on the big blue, so seeing if yall could suggest a few of your favorite flies and the best way to fish them. I think I have a few big clousures for salmon but thats it.

Big chartreuse on white clouser with green mylar flashabou. As big as you can tie. I also have some luck with articulated 2 hook streamers which gives you a bigger presentation but a bitch to cast.  :smt005

Chartreuse over white clouser is hard to beat, my favorite striper fly in a flash tail config. GB2 is right, big clousers, deceivers or rabbit leeches. I'm experimenting with shanks and tubes with trailing hooks. Gonna try some circle hooks too to see if they hang up less.

Google oregonflyfishingblog and check out some of Jay Nichols videos for saltwater flies, talked to him when I first started tying on tubes and he helped me alot.

I concur with the others. Clusters are hard to beat for rockfish. I use size 2s for smaller rockfish like blues and blacks and 3/0 or so for lings. Either all white with lots of flashabou tied in or white chartreuse.

I would fish the edge of the kelp with a fast sinking shooting head. Cast your fly parallel to the kelp and then strip and pause. Countdown in seconds until you find fish and repeat.

Weighted fly. Add bead eyes, white wolly worm or bugger with a white yarn body with gold wire wrap and lots of white maribou. Feel free to add a big white collar to it too, material of your choice. the wire will help it to last longer. That thing gets hammered.
Be vary careful casting from the yak when there's wind with the weighted fly. One little gust will put that thing in the back of your head pronto. BTDT.
Oh yea, go barbless. Mush easier......to remove from your head.  :smt044

Tied this today for an upcoming trip, was looking at a halloween BH for inspiration when I tied it. Tied it on a tube, maybe it will slide up sometimes and last longer but I'm not holding my breath...I hope Mr. Ling likes it.

How long is it and what size hook did you use?

Looks good Golfish. Upcoming trip??? :smt002
I just ordered up a bunch of  different colored Steve Farrar’s Blends.
I'll be making my flies about 5" long, extra big lead eyes and 2/0 saltwater hooks.  I'll post some results this weekend.
JfBaker, if I have room I'll bring some trying material with me to GS8.

That fly came out to about 6", about the same size as my normal Delta striper fly, just with a couple more layers to make it a little fuller. Since I'm targetting lings with this fly I will rig it up with a 4/0 or 5/0 trailing octopus or circle hook. If it works for RF in the column I could always size the hook down if some big blacks or olives take interest.

Nice, looking forward to what you come up with. Did you order your setup yet?

I think I will tie up some 8-10" string leeches with multiple hooks for sh&*ts and giggles. Who knew tying Ling flies could be fun?

Yep yep.
I'm using a old skool SA2 reel and a 10wt bps Heat rod. Pretty cheap set-up but should get the job done.

Nice lookin bait there GF!
I'm gonna be throwing an 8wt(my heaviest fly rod) so my clouser types wont be nearly as large as the ones you guys will huck.
What a great all around pattern though.
Those things will catch just about any fish fresh or salt.

I'm kind of a hack at tying flies but here is a design that has worked for me when I fished streamers for rockfish. It's about 6" long. It's a 2 hook design. I also used Owner Long Shanks 9/0 hooks for lings. I also made some articulated 2 hook designs which used an action disc. See if I can find one.
