Unfortunately not on the swing, I swing 90% of the time but since I haven't gotten a steelie since the fall I put on my "Clown Egg". No bobber though, I fished a technique that's half tight lining, half boondoggling only works on rivers with small consistent substrate. Very technical, giant #4 shot, lots of single hand doubles, snake rolls etc. to setup casts between branches. When I got frustrated casting that crap I picked up the spey rod and bombed some effortless casts and relaxed.

Landed 6/7 fatties over the weekend, smallest about 28" and 8-10 lbs. except for the one downrunner. All closer than 6 miles to the ocean, dime bright chromers went absolutely insane when hooked.

Not sure where you were at but went to one of our coastal gems and could not believe how crowded it was. Fish are getting hammered in every hole up here. Big skunk for me, struggling with the weighted lines and getting the swing right.

Lucky for me I have guide friend who wasn't booked last sun-mon. He hooked me up and we barely saw anyone all day where we fished. We started late and let the few gear guys go down first but we still hooked a lot of fish behind them.

Rockroach and I witnessed what you are talking about. We hit the Chetco when it was like 350CFS a few weeks ago, no low flow closures up there I guess. Fish podded up and getting hammered, they can keep wild fish on the Chetco too, pretty sad…

Unrelated but a guy died and 3 boats sunk on the Chetco when I was up there last weekend. Sounds like a sweeper took them out at Tamba hole…

You throwing a spey rod? Makes casting giant tips and 1/2 chickens easier.

I do have a spey rod, but still learning. Still learning the strelhead on a fly thing in general, reading the water (different tgan hardware/bait), casting big flies, sinking tips, all that goodness. Havent found any fly guides on the coast to ease the learning curve.

If you want to get your skagit/sinktip casting down hit me up during shad season, it's the perfect fish and time to learn on.

Hey Wizz,
Check out Steelheadonthespey.wordpress.com (Jason Hartwick). He's in your area right now and could probably help out.
Nothing helps more that just being on the water. Take it slow, focus on your bottom hand, and practice good technique.

For me, the whole swinging fly thing is just like throwing spoons. Cast straight across or 1/4 down stream(depending on how deep the run is) and keep that line tight as it swings across the river.

Golfish is right tho, swinging for shad is just like swinging for Steel. The only difference is you can catch 10-20 shad a hour.
Enjoy your journey.
