So it seems like we have a fair amount of fly fishers on the board, would anyone be interested in having a fly’s between friends FAOTY? Here’s what I was thinking, the entrance “fee” would be 12 flies, 2ea of your favorite six patterns, for six different species, preferably ones you tied yourself. We would begin on February first and go through December thirty first. We would follow the points system of AOTY with a few tweaks. Here’s what I’m thinking:

Species

Trout  7.75
Largemouth Bass 8
Smallmouth Bass 10
Spotted Bass 9
Panfish  12
Catfish  5.5
Carp  5.5
Shad  9
Steelhead  6
Salmon  5
Stiped Bass  5.5
Rockfish  8
Lingcod  5
Greenling  11
Surf Perch  12
Halibut  5

Bonus:
1/2 point per inch for a striped bass caught outside the golden gate
1 point per inch of salmon caught outside the golden gate

1. All fish must be hooked and landed from a kayak(paddle and pedal) with one exception:

1a. If it is deemed in the better health of an anadromous fish, (steelhead and salmon), you may beach your kayak, if, safe anchoring is not an option, and fight the fish from a seated position, but if it is not reasonable to fight the fish, to insure the health of the fish,  in this position, you may get out of your kayak and have an one kayak diameter area to play the fish out. Honor system.

2. Fish must be photographed on a standardized measuring device.
3. The nose portion of the fish must be touching the end of measuring device( mouth must be in a natural to closed position)
4. No pinching of tail

I will start another thread for reports and photos of fish and a leader board in the first post, that I will update. The way I see doing the prize format would be this;

1. All participants would post in this thread, what flies that they will be offering as their entry “fee“, at least the species’ that the fly will target(if you don’t know how to tie, you have 11 months to learn, or can buy or trade for your flies) before posting a fish.

2. All sets of fly’s  will get a number, buy sign up position, and thrown into a pot.

3. At the end of the year everyone posts a pic of their flies that they put in, and the FAOTY gets half of the entrance flies, their choice, then what is left will be given out by random selection by the following percentages;
 second place gets twenty percent
 third gets fifteen  percent
fourth gets ten percent and
fifth gets five percent.

So what do you think? I must confess that my main reason behind this is, that since taking up kayak fishing, I have really neglected my fly rods. So I am trying to get back into throwing flies. Cameron

Way damn cool!!!! Maybe a pif buy in for the cost of a dozen hand ties what ever that is? This might spark interest in some noobs or folks that don't tie.

I'm intrigued, but will be doing AOTY and KWars..that doesn't leave much time to fling flys.  In the past I was hardcore fly, but that has waned...

there's no sturgeon on there?

I don't fly fish much out of my kayak much, mostly just for transpo and stripers. I'll donate some flies though, it's about time to start building up my trout and shad stock anyway.

I'm thinking:

Some sort of tube, shank or string leech pattern
Traditional Klam/Trin swing flies
Clousers
Trout Nymphs
Shad Flies
Muddler

Sunrise OK Trident 13
