Hey fishy people, heard of Randys fishing and whale watching in Monterey? They have a nice website with lots of pictures. In the fishing gallery i saw this photo but can't tell what kind of fish this is. Do you think its a BSB? It kind of looks like one but the color is pretty light for a large BSB compared to what I have seen in Baja. Also it can't be a grouper since after all we are where we are right?

Anyone know what this is? Check out the nice fillet job there. Yummy. Meticulous markey quality cuts there!

The little mouth and fins sure look like a giant black sea bass.  So, what's up?

do you think it was before fishing them became illegal? i was trying to get a glimpse of his shoes and hairdo but can't tell if it was a pre-1982 fashion that he is decked out in. that was when it was declared illegal.

what nice fish they are. i followed one around at san clemente island that was the size of a vw bug.

There is one in Carmel Bay..........down by butterfly house is where I saw it.  Took my breath away as it followed the silly little rockfish up to my boat.

Oh?  I hadn't heard of one over on the Monterey side.

I was out with SteveS when we each saw it at different times during the morning.  We both were doubting our own eyes but when we reported it Brendan came back and said that oh yeah, he already knew about that fish......... :smt004

I'm pretty sure that's a Giant Sea Bass.  The size seems a bit big to be a gulf grouper or broomtail grouper and the location of the eye way on top of the head is very Giant Sea Bass-ish.

Now the question is whether this fish was caught in Baja, caught in California before the ban in 1982 or caught illegally.  Considering that this was from a Monterey Bay fishing and whale watching site, I'm guessing the Baja option is out.

Perhaps this was on one of their long long long range fishing trips south of the border :smt031 :smt031 :smt031 :smt031 :smt031
