Tides last weekend were perfect, barely a 1 foot difference in hi/lo.  Hell no this weekend though!  I will say I've done this trip and it's awesome, and very safe on small tide days.  Diablo Cove can be very productive for dungy's in close where bottom is sandy (farther out is rock), and because it's sheltered can even be used for a beach lunch break.  Gotta pick the right day though.

What the others have said about current and tides, as well as the easy parking and protected launch.  The past few days have been ideal as far as tides, due to small swings between high and low, but I'm curious how the big ocean swells affected that area, although it is somewhat sheltered from NW swell.  Black Sand Beach is also a great spot for dungies, but you gotta get in close, just a little outside the surf zone where it's sandy.  Rocky farther out so fewer dungies.  My avatar pic was taken on this trip btw.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Ideas for customizing Costco DK2 Trailer
« on: January 06, 2020, 03:33:43 PM »
https://www.costco.com/dk2-4.5-ft.-x-7.5-ft.-mighty-multi-utility-trailer-with-bed-tilt.product.100341985.html

I may have the opportunity to acquire a very lightly used one of these, and am curious about the customization options.  Any ideas how I could rig removable bars for kayaks and or bikes that would sit on top of the storage area?  I'd like to have this be removable so that I could use the trailer for hauling dirt/soil, and doing dump runs, but also use if for hauling recreational gear.  Using the already in place front and back cross bars could work for kayaks and paddle boards, but would be too far apart for bikes, although I guess the bikes could fit inside the storage area.  Thoughts?

Kayak Fly Fishing / Re: Fort Baker

I have (see my profile pic) a bunch of positives, a few negatives:

Positives - Easy parking and launch, great scenery, lots of fishing options (crab, rockies, halibut off beaches, salmon),
Bonita cove protected from NW swell and can land at beach there for a break

Negatives - Although there are fishing options, no sure things (always better options if only interest is to catch fish), Tides/Current/Weather

Biggest variable is the tides.  There are days where there is less than or around 1 foot of tide movement between high and low (great time to do it!), and days like this past weekend where the swing is close to 9 ft (no go!).

Hope this helps.

Awesome.  Where did you launch and where did you drop traps?

General Talk / Re: Tahoe Basin Inspections
« on: October 03, 2018, 02:30:09 PM »
Nothing in those links (including a VERY LENGTHY FAQ) about kayak inspections...I went up a couple of weeks ago and stopped in the check point in Meyers.  They checked it out and asked a couple of questions, but didn't give me a "receipt" or anything.  I think they do something to boat trailers though so inspectors at launch ramps will know it's been checked.  I think its the honor system with kayaks, SUP's, etc.  After going through the check point in Meyers the ranger at DL Bliss kiosk asked where the boat was last in the water, then we said we just went through the inspection, and she said "oh ok."  All they are really worried about is if your kayak is dry, no water in it that can support life.  If it's dry, you can launch with a clean conscience.

If you go to Sand Harbor now you won't have any problem.  I was there on Sunday 9/9, first NFL Sunday.  Got there at 10 to a wide open parking lot and I'm not sure it ever filled.  July/August, different story...My iPhone says highs in mid 70's this weekend.  Do it!

Man, I wouldn’t attemp it unless you got lucky and missed the tides.
I have never seen it calm from a boat. The surrounding areas might look calm, but that Gate is a killer. I wouldn’t attemp it even if someone paid me a lot of money and what are you going to fish for?
There’s do many other safer and more productive places to fish🎣🐟🙏😎

You don't have to "get lucky" to miss the tides, you check the tide tables.  Seriously, on a small tide morning (like Sept 17, high is 4.4 at 7:50 am, low is 3.1 at 12:27pm, Oct 16 is similar), it is very doable.  We had an NCKA hookup there like 9-10 years ago (I think that's the day my avatar pic was taken) and there were a bunch of rockfish caught and a great time was had by all.  You can catch WSB and Halibut in Bonita cove, and of course the salmon have to swim right through there.  And because of the protection of Point Bonita that beach is an easy landing to take a lunch break.  You can park about 10 feet from a sheltered harbor launch, and you are right next to a Coast Guard station so no one will mess with your car.  Yeah there are more productive places to fish, but not too many more accessible and beautiful.  Sure, if you are out with the kite surfers at 4 in the afternoon when it's blowing 25 and there is a ripping ebb tide, totally different story.  As for the legality, you just have to stay a certain number of feet or yards away from the towers, not that big a deal.  BTW, Fort Baker is on the Marin side, Baker Beach is on the SF side (and not as protected).

Check out my avatar pic.  Totally doable on small tide days.  I saw a bunch of party boats fishing right under the bridge on a morning last week and just read that they were picking up Salmon.  Easy parking and beach launch at Horseshoe Cove/Fort Baker on the Marin side.

Baldwin Beach, just a little bit past Tallac is also a good option.  Parking lot is very close to the beach and it's a doable paddle to Emerald Bay as you troll for kokes.  http://www.tahoepublicbeaches.com/baldwin-beach/
