General Talk / Fish Kill in San Francisco Bay
« on: August 26, 2022, 09:15:32 AM »
Hey All

I'm seeing reports of dead striper and sturgeon in South SF Bay near the Dumbarton Bridge. Anyone out in the bay this weekend?  If so let me know if you see any dead fish.

Fish Talk / CDFW Reward Tags in Sturgeon and Striped Bass!!!
« on: April 01, 2022, 12:53:32 PM »
Has anyone ever caught sturgeon or striped bass in the Delta or estuary with little round white disks attached?  I'm now working for CDFW and I oversee this program that is attaching these angler reward tags to sturgeon and striped bass.  We did this as a means to estimate abundance through recapture and reporting of the tag, but out of thousands of striped bass tags and hundreds of sturgeon tags, we only get handfuls reported each year. If anyone has these tags as souveniers, I'd really appreciate you contacting me at my CDFW email.

James.Hobbs@wildlife.ca.gov.

Our latest estimates of sturgeon abundance are really low, so I'm concerned about the bag limits, BUT I can't get the commission to make changes without accurate data. I'd really appreciate your help.

On another note, I'm needing tissue and finray samples from sturgeon and striped bass scales and otoliths for updating our information on age and growth, so if you happen to harvest either species I could use those samples.  For sturgeon, any size is great but for striped bass we are particularly needing larger fish.  So few big striped bass left.

Anway, hope all is well in NCKA land.  Hoping to someday get back in the yak.

What is NCKA again? I haven't had a fishing license in probably 10 years.  And you know what, my life is SAD.  I've been working so hard trying to save the little fishies in the Delta, but I have had not impact.  Should have just kept fishing. Last year I gave up and took that "cushy" government job and stepped into a whole new pile of Sh%t.  Maybe someday I will get back to kayak fishing.  But I certainly miss many of my OG friends I made during my kayak fishing days.  Until COVID is over, will hope to see you on the water.

The former Bodega Crew, InSeine and Steeleleader will be there to see our friend Uminchu finally get his AOTY award. The last time I attended an NCKA event was Mooch memorial paddle. Looking forward to seeing old friends.

General Talk / Fish scientist in need of RV?
« on: February 01, 2014, 10:38:48 AM »
Guys

As some of you may know I have a sorely underfunded research project on the Guadalupe River in San Jose looking at steelhead smolt out-migration and use of restored salt ponds as rearing habitat.  I sent out a message for assistants.  Thanks to those that have volunteered. The project is ramping up next week.  As soon as we have the kinks worked out I will be contacting you.

I have another task involved that will be using minnow traps in several ponds in the Alviso Marsh that would need daily checking....and if non-target species which happen to be good striper bait were in the traps I wouldn't know what happened to them  :smt002.

I'm also asking if anyone would have an RV or toy trailer they would be willing to let me borrow for a few months.  I have a place to keep an RV or something remotely comfortable to sleep in at the Fish and Wildlife Refuge in Freemont, but no actual trailer or RV, so it would be kept in a safe secure location.

Finally, associated with this work, I and ChuckE will be putting together a little shark fishing derby so stay tuned.

Thanks brothers.

General Talk / Help with steelhead research on the Guadalupe River
« on: January 16, 2014, 01:21:58 PM »
Guys

Ok, some of you probably know me.  Been a while since I've been active on the cite.  I've been part of NCKA from just about the very beginning, but my research has kinda dominated any of my fishing time.  I have some research projects in South San Francisco Bay that I could use some volunteers for .  I have posted in the past on this and then dropped the ball.  One project I have coming up in the next month is monitoring steelhead in the Guadalupe River in and around downtown San Jose....yes there a juvenile steelhead, believe it or not.  We will be doing a variety of things including back-pack e-fishing, checking a trap for fish and doing routine maintenance on an antenna that can read tags, like the microchips we put in our pets.  The antennas would need to be checked daily and batteries changed out.  This will be some interesting work and hopefully fun.  If your interested in volunteering, send me an e-mail jahobbs@ucdavis.edu.

Another thing I could use your help with is lodging and storage of me and a couple of my staff.  The project will be starting at the end of the month, and we would need to be in South Bay almost daily.  The project is sorely underfunded and so we don't have funds to cover motel costs.  Anyone in the San Jose area that could put us up, or has any kind of storage space, and RV or what not, that would be super appreciated.  There will be some fishing opportunities associated with the estuary portion of the research.  We will be monitoring Alviso Slough in conjunction with the Steelhead project and also doing a study on Leopard Sharks.  Hook and line has turned out to be the best way to sample the sharks so I could use some anglers.  We will be tagging the sharks as well, so you can't eat them.  So if you have a place for use, a garage space to store some field gear or would like to volunteer let me know.  Later in the summer Chuck-E and I may organize a shark derby to catch tagged fish, so stay tuned.

Thanks guys,

Jim

Pay It Forward / Pay it Forward potential cause
« on: October 18, 2013, 09:43:48 AM »
I'm sure you of you are Giants fans from the 80's.  Through my swing dance circle I have become friend with Jeffrey Leonard (The Hackman).  He and his wife have a foundation for fund raising to support the families of breast cancer, by providing support for families caring for family member with breast cancer with via help with house cleaning, meals the everyday things that can make a big difference.  So the funds go directly to families where it can help.  Check out their site below.  I was thinking this could be one of the causes we could support with one of Pay It Forward Events......I'm sure Jeffrey could get some Giants schwag....and you'd get to meet "The Hackman".  He and his wife are really good people.  They started the foundation when one of Jeffery's daughters came down with breast cancer, and they saw what it took for a family to cope with the difficult situation.  I know we have been trying to support our own members, but just thought I'd pass this along as an idea.

Was good seeing you all again at Mooch's service.
