Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / thurs tbay again
« on: October 19, 2023, 02:48:52 PM »
Hot on Tbay today although when I left around 1 the NW breeze came up. Long day. First fish was the biggest leopard shark I've ever hooked. I tried to save my jig but it made a shake as I had the leader in left hand and long needle nose in right and the frayed leader parted. Finally got a bite. Medium size halibut which you can see trailing beside me, dog, reel and yak. Saw no other action from the two or three PB's out. Season is coming to an end. Maybe one more trip.

My son and I went to Tbay today. I caught a couple near Hog. Not large but no need to measure. A few days ago when this site was down we went out and got limits, four fish. Nice ones. Largest was over 20#. Next day we went out again and not a bite between us. It is hit and miss in Tomales this year. I have no advice for anyone fishing Tbay, having had more skunks this year than fish.

So, I finally decided to go to Lawsons, pay 10 for entry and 3 for a kayak launch and  try for the halibut on the bar. One crab which bit off the tail of my swimbait, one 20 inch ling that falsely raised my hopes for three seconds, and a lot of pedal push against the tide to get out to the Tomales entrance marker buoy. Eight or nine PB's out there but I saw no action and they dispersed after awhile, The bar area can run 9 to 30 plus feet in a hurry. Not a bad ride from Lawsons but not a short distance either. After enough time of no bites and fighting the incoming current I went to the west side and worked the 30 to 20 foot depths. No love  and by then the south wind came up ferociously so pedaled to the landing and called it a day. If one lives there and goes out every day you will connect with a fish but today was barren , at least for me. Pic is the return to Lawsons. Choppy.

Probably staying in Sonoma County. kind of a crappy location where they are now. I doubt that 25% off applies to their kayaks like the Revolution but to accessories.

When you speak of commercial fisherman decimating the fish stocks off northern California which fish stocks are you referring to? Inshore rockfish? Off shore halibut? Commercial guys lost the salmon season and have had big cuts taken out of crab because of whale migrations. As far as economic power goes I believe the sports fishing industry have far more leverage than the commercial fleet. There has been a huge increase in the number of both PB and kayak craft the last few years and the pressure on rockfish stocks is intense. The quillback issue is a means the "deciders" chose to limit the fish take. A better solution is to half the limit per day.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Which line/test for rock fishing?
« on: July 12, 2023, 03:57:15 PM »
Usually 50# braid 40 # mono but 40# can be hard to break. I did snag a mother of a bat ray the other day and had a hell of a time breaking off. Finally it made another run and I was able to jam the spool and yank back the rod and snapped it off. On the ocean, wrapping line around a gaff handle then lifting with a swell works well but a big bat is unpredictable so I didn't want to be tied to it in the yak.

Each year I get a senior pass for Marin Parks but this year they refunded the money with my application. Later I called and had it confirmed over the phone that they dropped the fee. To me, this is not a great idea. Five bucks was minimal and helped maintain the place. Secondly, you can expect a lot more non fishing people to come in and park and have a picnic and take a hike. Parking slots will be harder to come by.

I think the few halibut, and a couple of them large, have been caught on the bar or on on the seaward side of the bar. On a good weather day launching from Lawsons and fishing that area probably would up one's chances of a catch but not by a lot. This may be a low fish year in Tbay.

Well, once again I had to see if any halibut had entered the bay. I started south of Hog and jigged for awhile then since I wanted to cover a long stretch of water, set up a small flasher, 12 ounce ball sinker and a Green Label herring threaded with an Easy baiter and 5 ought salmon hook. All the way to marker no. 5 against the incoming tide. At no. 5 I saw some boats and thought maybe they were on fish, but no, crabbers and snare tossers. I switched back to a swimbait and kept going toward the bar but finally figured it was pointless so started back. By now the tide switched so against the outgoing I pedal, stopping every so often to test past favorite spots. All the way to Hog with sloppy/wind now blowing so I quit. If I didn't have the dog with me I might have tried the bar. Sore legs when I got home.

I do not think there are many halibut in yet. Water was warm enough but pretty much a blank screen for bait. Possibly the best area might be around Lawsons and the bar.

Craftsmen's Corner / Re: installing a fishfinder tips needed
« on: May 25, 2023, 09:07:58 AM »
Hi guys.  I'm trying to figure out the best way to install a fish finder on an adventure island. I currently have it set up so the transducer is glued to the inside of the hull, and the chords come out the hatch to the unit. The obvious problem, I cant close the hatch very well with the chords coming out. My plan is to drill a hole and run the power and transducer chords through the boat, and install the fish finder on a removable bracket, so I can toss it in the boat or remove it if need be.  The problem here, is that I will still have the permanently  installed wires coming out of my boat, which I fear will get corroded as they have in the past. The wires have plugs with multiple prongs, and I want to find a way to keep them from getting corroded again. I have used dialectic grease, which helps a bit. Any suggestions on how you all install your fishfinders?  Thanks. I have a Lowrance Mark 4. I think it might require drilling 2 one inch holes that will need wire caps of some sort. Thanks for any suggestions!!
I have the Adventure, 2012 model, and have just run the wires out the front hatch for 11 years. It works. Maybe a small amount of water gets in near the wires where the gasket does not seal completely but some water always leaks through those front hatchs. Very simple setup and at the end of the day battery, transducer and FF easily depart the yak. Same FF as yours also.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / tbay friday
« on: May 05, 2023, 02:34:34 PM »
A quick report for Tbay today. Nada, nothing, zero. A few pb's running around trying fishing in between crab pot checks but I saw no action fishing below Hog around yellow can and channel marker, Beautiful when I launched around 9:30 but by noon a biting SE wind with chop sent me back to the launch. Probably too early yet for Tbay unless one went to Inverness. Water wasn't too cold judging by hand immersion but maybe four foot of vis and very very little bait sign. Maybe try again in a couple of weeks.

General Talk / Re: Paddle vs Pedal vs Sailing Fishing Tactics
« on: May 04, 2023, 04:45:57 PM »
The only extra thing I bring is the drive for the Adventure Hobie and the times I've forgotten the drive it paddles  fairly effectively. It is stable in the water but I have no lawn chair seat, just the one it came with that has half an inch of elevation. Center of gravity is all important on narrow kayaks.

Off the Oregon coast 1919. Wish I had a time machine. Pic located on Salty History files. I typed in Salty History Bodega Bay and a plethora of old photos appeared from San Diego to Astoria Oregon concerning fishing and boats and shipwrecks and huge fish catches.

General Talk / Re: Bluekayak fiberglass paddle dive boat?
« on: April 27, 2023, 10:38:16 AM »
One could convert it to a peddle drive effectively since it is fiberglass and a wood drive box for a Mirage drive can be glassed into the hull relatively easily. In that it is long and looks narrow, two light outriggers for stability need to be added. Be a fast moving craft. If I didn't already make a conversion from paddle to pedal I would be on it.

General Talk / Re: CDFW Considers CaliHali Limit Reduction
« on: April 15, 2023, 04:58:43 PM »
I don't think it is the number of fisherman that determine the overall catch but it is the efficiency most anglers have now. GPS mapping , color depth finders, the ability to mark and return to spots. In the past, offshore fishing depended on reading rock outcroppings, the color of water, and accepting that current with fog would push you off a hotspot into dead zones and one had a hard time re-locating where the fish were. We have entered the electronic era and it is easier to catch fish so yes, reduce limits to whatever makes fishing sustainable.
