Title: Question for the Hobie experts
Post by: Grim Reefer on December 02, 2017, 07:37:16 PM
Hey guys, Need some advice from the Hobie owners out there.  I recently scored a ridiculous deal on a 2008 Hobie Outback.  It was owned by an old fly fisherman who used it a few times and decided he didn't like it for that purpose so it sat in his shop for the last few years.  The hull is pretty much mint condition with a few small scratches on the bottom. It has the V1 drive (regular fins) and small rudder.  I am planning on tearing the drive down and giving it some TLC.  My questions are: 1. While I have it apart, should I do any of the V2 upgrades that I see kits for? This drive really looks to have been lightly used so the original parts look pretty good. 2. Is it worth it to switch to the ST or ST Turbo fins? The fins that are on it have no tears and are in good condition.  Will be used in the salt quite a bit but I have recently started to do a lot of lake trolling and will be setting this up for that.  Thanks in advance.

Definitely get the turbo fins and the bigger rudder.  I don't know why Hobie sold drives with the small fins, because everybody ended up upgrading to the turbo fins.

Just get the turbo fins & sailing rudder.

PMMP and SC are right.
I still have my original 2008 V1 drive with a lot of use on it.
Thinking back I may have replaced the cables at one time, can't recall for sure.
I do know that periodic inspection making sure the bolts and cables are tight is a must.
Enjoy your new ride.

I've tried all 3 sizes of Hobie fins, and turbo is definitely the way to go. The larger rudder is cheap and makes for a significantly tighter turning radius, so I'd recommend that too, but it's not as essential as the big fins, IMHO.

Thanks for the quick feed back guys.  I am going to get the large rudder, st turbo fins and leave the drive as is for now. Can’t wait to get it out for some joke and trout trolling. Thanks for the advice.

I would suggest adding a gel filled seat pad.  I own this one and wouldn't go out without it on my 2012 AI.  Gives your butt a lot of comfort.

Better than the ascend seat conversion?
