My revo gets a lot of water inside in the slop.  It comes through the front hatch seal.  Carry a bilge pump and build a waterproof battery box for your electronics.  Done and done.  You can use pool noodles or build thick foam bulkheads if you want more flotation.

I cant help but think that whatever the issue is (assuming it is not specific to his specific boat) that it has to be easily resolved.  Seems to me that the issue is that some seal some where is failing and letting in water.

Seems to me,  if no water was getting in the hull, then yes,  it would be a wet ride (I assumed as much based on my demo of the kayak), but there would be no sinking danger.

I guess I will see.  It seems that if this is an issue, I should be able to rig something to resolve it.  Sucks to have to do that on such an expensive unit though.

Looks like the gulf? Does that even count as being in the ocean?  :smt044

Echoing the other comments, taking waves over the bow is no big deal. If tons of water is getting inside then there is something wrong with the hatches or seals on your kayak. This is something to test for and figure out when you are close to shore.

Paying attention to how your boat handles and being able to sense when there is water in the hull is also important.

The water in the video was bumpy for sure, but it still looked fishable in that kayak.

As mentioned, secondary flotation and a bilge pump are must-haves in the ocean.

Is there some flaw in the new outback where it is taking on water?
I wish this was addressed better in the video.
Maybe the footage doesn't properly capture the conditions, but I feel like half the time I go out swells are worse, and have had no problems in my outback or PA

Bilge pump should be one of the first pieces of safety equipment you carry. It’s up there with pfd and radio.  The conditions in the video weren’t ideal but not that bad.   Been in worse many times with my Thresher and never had any water in the hull.

That should not happen. I don't know about the Outback, but AI's are known to sometimes take on water thru the front hatch. That problem seems to vary significantly from kayak to kayak, but even in the worst cases it's not too difficult to address.

In any case, you should definitely do a shake-down cruise on a lake before even thinking about going offshore like that. My first Hobie was a 2013 Adventure (similar to the current Revo 16), and my first trip with it was to Lexington Reservoir. After about an hour in pretty calm conditions, it had gallons of water inside. It turned out that there was a significant leak where the rudder attaches to the kayak. The Hobie warranty is great, and I got new kayak without any problem. But,  I'm glad I wasn't miles offshore when I discovered that that kayak had a problem.

I would not be surprised if the Outback in that video has some significant defect beyond just a leaky front hatch.
Please don't spoil my day, I'm miles away...

What gets me is that he is aware that the kayak is somehow taking in water, but decides to keep going anyways.  He even says that he had to stop 3 times to pump out water.

If I had an unknown leak, then I would've turn right back around and figure it out.  If I knew for sure it was something simple like a front hatch seal, okay no big deal.

But he didn't know why he was taking on water and still pushed to go out and "make something of the trip".  That right there makes him lose all credibility to me to give a good review of the new Outback.

Bro!  We could share.  There is so much room on this thing, we can just go out together.  One of us could work the bilge pump while the other fished!   :smt003

8 miles and no bilge pump = noway hosay. 👎👎 My 2016 outback sure doesn’t leak like that even up at Albion this year with all the choppy water.

This guy's boat was way overloaded, which probably didn't help. And he had a thousand pieces of gear but no bilge pump?! He lost all credibility there. I doubt the new Hobie Outback is incapable of handling ocean conditions. Either his boat is faulty or he was just poorly prepared is my guess.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...
