I wanna go do some cat hunting....  catFISH that is.

Gonna try Cosumnes river tomorrow and somewhere else on Thursday.  Not sure where yet. Anyone have any suggestions on where to find some tasty catfish this time of year? I tried amador today but no luck. I did find a HUGE flathead skeleton on the bank that still had the hook and fishing line in its mouth and the line was tangled around some big rocks and a tree stump. Whoever broke that fish off lost a nice one!

Anyway, any suggestions would be appreciated and anyone who wants to join is welcome.

So tomorrow, Wednesday, Cosumnes River Preserve at 0730.

Thursday, 0730, location TBD.

Thanks! I’ll need all the luck I can get! I haven’t caught any catfish in a long time.

Late report, sorry.

So yesterday at Cosumnes river, it was the usual bass and crappie. Fairly small bass but some decent size crappie. Unfortunately, the catfish were a no show.

Today, I was gonna go to clear lake but had to cancel. Gonna try for Sunday instead.

Did you happen to get a pic of that skull?  A flathead in Amador would surprise me.

Catfishing at CL is good this time of year, but I wouldn’t recommend eating them.

No I didn’t think to take a pic of it but I’m sure it’s still there. From what the lady in the shop says, they do have flatheads there but most of the catfish caught are channels.

Really? I read that the catfish are ok to eat out of there as long as you don’t eat them often.
I read lots of water/fish quality reports and they’re all pretty much the same as far as the recommendations of which fish are ok to eat and which to stay away from. From the delta to ocean to all the reservoirs around California. Catfish are one of those that recommended for 1 to two servings a week deals.

+1.   Clear Lake water is pretty gross, I wouldn't eat fish from there.

I think the lady at Lake Amador is misinformed. As far as I’m aware flathead catfish only exist in California in the Colorado river drainage, and some of the  Southern  California state water project reservoirs.

Dammit... clear lake seemed like the best bet to catch some....

So where should I go that I’ll have a good chance at some edible catfish? I was told Lake Mendocino is good but I’ve never fished there. I was also told knights landing and somewhere near Verona on the river is good too but I’ve never fished either of those.  Both of those would obviously be non yak trips but I hear people catching catfish there all the time in the summer. Don’t know about winter though.

I caught a couple while camping at Lake Sonoma this summer -- no great size but they're there.

Good luck and let us know where you found them.

Cheers,
Brad

I had really good luck at Folsom back in Sept.
My daughter caught a couple hogs.
South fork, first slough on the left.
Anchovie fillet.
Right around sunset.
