Title: HMB derby
Post by: INSANEDUANE on June 10, 2007, 06:55:40 PM
Well it had to happen soon or later I could not be happier with todays
Win because when I seen how many kayaks were on the beach this morning,
I did not think I had a chance to take first place but the live smelt was just
To good for MR ling to resist yeeehaaa :smt007

It was peer hell waiting on the beach for everyone to come in with their
Catch and when I seen Allen lift his game clip out of his kayak my
Hart sank when I got a look at his ling I just had a feeling he, beat
Me but in the end I got him, by one inch that was close to close. :smt010

As for the ling he fought hard all the way to the end but I had
My 975LD with 20 # line and a shimano TDR 8.6 trolling rod
This was my first time out with this rod and it did real well
I think I will keep it. :smt005

Now I would like to thank HMB kayaks for putting on this
Derby and cobra kayaks for putting up the kayak for this event
+ BILL and everyone who made this one best fishing trips
I have ever had I am on cloud 9 baby. :smt001

insaneduane,

There were a lot of yakers out today and you came out on top! Congratulation on the winning Lingzilla :smt001 An earlier post,  you showed forty of your friends.  How many of them did you have to sacrifice before you hooked up :smt003

Congratulations Man!!!

Congratulations Duane, you deserve this win! :smt002

There were atleast 50 kayaks on the water, foggy in the morning, clearing somewhat around 10.

Danglin almost performed his Newbie trick, lost a good size Halibut near the entrance of the Harbor.

Good times, Great people.

Congrats on the big win, Duane!  Of course, big thanks to Chuck and Bill and everyone who had a hand in organizing/orchestrating the event.

I'll get the pics started with this, the lone picture I took today...

What a great day! I was a bit intimidated by the fog; I haven't been on the water much last year or this year (mostly in it), so I was a bit intimidated by not knowing where the @*^% I was most of the time. I think I'm out of my league with you guys, but if I keep fishing with y'all, hopefully that'll change.
Duane, congrats on the well-deserved win; you worked the science and the mojo and it payed off wonderfully!
Thanks to Bill, Chuck, HMB yaks and everyone who donated prizes.
I'm in for next year!

We had an amazing turnout today, 72 kayak anglers!!!  The fog was pretty thick out there today and the swell was intense at times but Duane and everyone powered through. Final standings:

1. Duane - 32 inch ling
2. Allen Bushnell - 31 inch ling
3. Dave Swenson - 28.5 inch ling

The special Hobie bait tank prize went to Ben with a 28 inch ling. The raffle was an amazing success as well. Tin cleaned up winning the Bob Franko custom rod, scotty rod holder and the MacSki!! We raised $1,008 for the ASA!!! Amazing!

Thanks to everyone that came and fished, Doug and Chris at HMB Kayak Company, Cobra, Outback Adventures, Hook 1, Aquan, Rollez and Mel Cottons for there support.

Special thanks to Chuck in for doing all the hard work behind the scenes. This would not happen without Chuck!

I got one picture of Duane on the water but it is way out of focus. I will post it anyways.

Duane,

You are the man and you deserve the win. I learned a lot today and finally had a chance to test the live bait tank and it worked perfectly.  Thats a mighty nice GPS you have there being able to find structure when you need it.

I wanted to let you know the bait tank in my vehicle with the recirculation system is now working perfectly and I had zero kill rate this time around.  Actually, I had to throw most of the bait back.  Many thanks to you for all information on keeping bait alive.

Congrats Duane.  A very derserved win with that solid ling.  That's karma coming back around at ya two-fold.

WTG to SCAllen and Dave for 2nd & 3rd.... and to Paul for being the top Hobie finisher and winning the Livewell.

The mass start of 72 kayaks was an incredible sight and a very proud moment for NCKA.

Despite the fog and the many members who weren't able to attend, it all turned nice.  I was glad to see the fog break which helped everyone find their way back to the harbor.

Thanks again to Doug and the HMB Kayak Co., our generous prize sponsors, and all of the members who helped out.

AI... thanks for taking and posting those pics.

Thanks for a great time Bill and Chuck, you guys rock.  Gongrats to Duane for his first place ling and Dave and Allen for 2nd and 3rd.  Dave you have a 2nd and 3rd place finish.  You better win the big one soon! You don't want to end up like Peyton Manning before he won the big one. :smt002 :smt002
Anyway I didn't think about this till later but normally if I can't see land from shore because of the fog it seems a little spooky.  However, with so many kayaks on the water it never realy crossed my mind.  Great event!

What a great event that was.  It seems like it's impossible to attend an NCKA event that isn't top notch.

Liz was totally excited about the black she caught, her first kayak fishing rock fish!! I'm glad she didn't feak out on the swells and the fog.   :smt003  Thanks Chuck for letting us hang with you for a bit...it was good to be guided over to the green can.

One thing that's for sure is that I'm going to be buying a GPS real soon.

Congrats to Duane and all of the other winners and a big thank  you to all those responsible for putting the event on and also to the sponsors who provided such great prizes.

A big huge thanks to Chuck and Bill for arranging the logistics of the tournament, and to all those sponsors that contributed ! Cobra, MacSki, HMB Kayaks, and Hobie just to start the list. And for all those of you that helped to bring in those additional sponsors!

That was a very impressive starting lineup of kayaks. I just have to wonder what the folks on the docks were thinking as the entire flotilla went out this morning. Plastic Navy indeed.

Conditions were pretty nice south of Pillar Point, but became very reminiscent of Elk 2006 + fog once you were "outside". I was beginning to question my beeline to the 50 foot depth zone 1 mile northwest of Pillar Point when I hadn't seen a soul in about 2 hours. Just after I did a radio check to reassure myself that the rest of you'se were still out there, I saw cafecraig through the fog. It wasn't long after that that the fog lifted just a bit, and the chop seemed to die down significantly as well. Lo and behold there were about half a dozen other 'yakers out there.

As for the fishing itself, I put one measly black in the boat, and had 4-5 short takes on the monster scampi that I was using. One little aggro underling let go right below the boat, and every time I tried to drop the jig, it would grab it again. I wanted to catch it just to teach it a lesson, but it eventually tired of the game and I was able to back to fishing. Fishing was slow enough that anyone that brought in a fish is to be commended. So extremely big kudos to the tourney winners!

Regards,
Scott

Their was one guy yelling at us from a boat about how many of us their are on the beach.

Reminds me of my favorite moment from the day. As we all launched, I noticed a light on in the boat at the corner of the first pier.  Didn't see anyone on the boat and was thinking there was just a light left on, when out of the berth window a crusty old geezer sticks his head out, sees 70 kayaks floating past, and says "Ooh, the bite must be on today!!"

I imagine that he'd have really freaked if he woke up only as 70 kayaks were landing / invading.

Hey Duane -

Way to go. All that good karma from getting us all that bait for months finally paid off. You certainly deserved it  :smt003. My 24 inch ling looks like a dink compared to yours although any ling is better than no ling. Good to fish with Etienne although I am sure he thought I was crazy when we hit a couple of big swells just south of Mavericks. All in all a good day and great company.

Many thanks to Bill and Chuck for a well-planned and executed event!

I'll admit that I was a bit disappointed my ling didn't quite measure up, but there's no one I'd rather lose to than Duane.  Karma, indeed.

WTG Duane, luck definitely plays a part, but first you have to do everything right.

I heard that today HMB area we fished at is like Victory at Sea.  Mike Sapp (solsrf) called and ssaaid it was outrageous whitewater everywhere we were fishing yesterday, by the point.  Looks like the swell picked up.  Good timing for us!

Thanks to all for the great pix.  I'm amazed especially at the launch photos.  All those fishing yaks!

Great to see or meet everyone yesterday, and we're really looking forward to the next big NCKA get-together.....

Also great to see Bob Franko and Ben Sleeter make an appearance at the shindig.  Franko wis very impressed with our breed of fishers, as well he should be.  Fish count for more when they are caught from a kayak.

Love to see some more pix from those that clicked 'em!

Hay everyone just got off work and man I am tired I think I passed out at 700pm
Last night I was so tired when I got home yesterday I could hardly make a post
As for pics I did not take any my cam is dead so I guess I will be getting a new one.

As for the GPS map it is from ‘Magellan meridian marine’ the software is
MAPSEND BLUENAV North America it came with the GPS’.
Real good stuff you can download from the GPS or too the GPS’ with
This software you can plan your trip on your pc and download to the GPS
And find your way too the waypoints you program so cool I just love it the whole day I knew Where I was at and could find my way back to the rocks and stay on the fish
This is the best map out there as far as GPS go’s it by far has the most detail
of all the maps out there.

If you have a MAGELLAN with MAPSEND software you have to save your
Track on the GPS first then upload to your PC and it will show your track
Line on the map then you do a screen capture then open paint and paste the
Screen capture and trim out what you don’t need then save as jpeg on your
Desktop or wherever you want.

As for the derby' man what a day it was great to see the big turnout
What will it be like 2 or 3 years from now 200 kayaks?

I tell you this much I can’t wait till ELK my 40 friends are excited
To go to I will choose the biggest and the best for that one + I have
And new weapon that I am working on but it won’t help me catch
Any fish but it will make the day much easier.

will be doing a live bait trip real soon look for the post
free bait for everyone or as manny as I can do the record
is 7 yakers so far but I think I can beat that.

CYA duane  :smt006

What a great derby!  The fog rollin in, the 70+ madyakkers racing for the reefs, at first I was kinda not into it with the lack of sleep, but then, red bull, and away I went.  I finally started hookin fish in the last 2 hours when I switched over to a 4" anchovie fish trap, my catches, 3 small blacks released, a 18" cabezon, a 16" greenling, and a 14" black&yella.  The greenling had 1" worms in the meat when I fillet'd it. :smt092  gnarly...

As for the winners, Duane, congrats, me and Chuck were talking about what a hardcore fisherman you are, and Allen, way to go and Dave, thats 2 derbys within a years time you've placed in.  It was nice to see 3 experienced yak fishers take the wins.  It was nice meetin some new faces and I look forward to fishing with some of you again.  Tin, congrats on winning all those goodies, you should trade one of them for some turbo fins for your hobie. :smt044

Thanks to all those who contributed and to Chuck & Bill for makin it happen.  Whens the next one???  We should try to have an impromptu halibut & striper derby before Elk????   jtf..

Winner with Kayak

To Duane,Al and Dave way to go gentlemen. And everyones right Duane good things happen to good people. You three are the best of NCKA.
To the Hobie bait tank winner ENVY is the word for you brother. I was so looking forward to hooking that tank to my Revo.
Tin how the hell did you do that? You outfitted yourself just about in one day.
To the sponsors you folks rock and made a great day even better with your generousity.

Like everyone else I was totally burnt out by the end of the day. That fog was intense and keep me at the edge of my (kayak) seat all day. Wow did I sleep.

I just wanna say thanks to everyone; but of course Bill & Chuck (maybe Mooch too!?) for made such a great tourney happen!!! :smt041   I really enjoying meeting those crazy yakers & great seen those newbies (esp. the one guy who got fishing pole, rodholder, & the kingfisher too)!!!  Condition was much better & I caught more fish this year but it was baby day for me...
Congrats to Duane (you're truly insane) & thanks for making Brian's giant Cab (AOTY's #1 Cab right now) look like baby :smt023

Wow what a ****ing great event! Thanks to Bill, Chuck, CPkayak, Danglin, others in helping plan, organize and execute this event. Congrat to Duane, Allen and Dave for the great catches. As for myself caught and release 3 short lings. Caught and kept two blacks for proof that I actually went fishing. For supplying eveyone with baits, it is most deserving that Duane win first place.

Lady luck was sure on my side during the raffle. I won tee shirt, a pole holder, a Bob Franko fishing rod  and a Macski Kingfisher kayak. I think I woulda got kill if I won one more prize.  :smt044 Well, I just hope I didn't used up all my luck. I going to need it for the Elk derby.

Btw JTF, I have turbo fins. I just never but should  put them on.

Hey congrats again Duane!

...I tell you this much I can’t wait till ELK my 40 friends are excited
To go to I will choose the biggest and the best for that one...

I'm afraid the registration for Elk is full to non-Mendo County residents.  Besides who picks their fishing partners based on size?

At least I'm assuming you're referring to fishing buddies, because I'm pretty sure transporting live finfish between bodies of water is against the regulations.  But then again what do I know, I'm just a suspected Mexican scallop poacher.

Bill, Chuck, Mooch and everyone that helped...Great Tourney!  Thanks a bunch to the sponsors and congrats to the winners.  Duane we all looked up to you as the  bait guy but now you're our HMB ling slayer.  Allen, Dave, Paul, you guys gave it a good shot (especially Allen's ling) but you certainly earned the respect from the rest of us.  Good to meet new folks and put some faces to the names.  Mooch thanks for the "chatter" on the radio, it gave us something to laugh about while we were all paddling around in the twilight zone.

Going out in the fog was weird and since I wanted to fish some spots where fish weren't already spooked, I went searching for some mystery structure that I never found.  What I did find was that I was out in the middle of no where and had PBs roaring pass me in the fog...not good.  In the distance I could hear the green can so I paddled towards it and ran into my fellow yakkers.  I never did find that monster ling but I did hook up with a few cabbies.  Kept one for dinner and figured that only a good sized ling was worth going for at this point.

Then the wind started kicking in...time to head for home.  No visuals of the harbor from the green can so we just headed for the fog horn.  Then the wind really started to pick up and every stroke took some effort.  If you guys are wondering why you were wasted well you probably put in 3 times the energy you normally use to get back to the beach.  Good thing I car pooled with Scott (GB2), he kept talking to me to keep me awake on the way home.

Tim, good going in scoring on the raffle...I hope you bought a lottery ticket on your way home before your lucky streak ends.

Gary

Yep, unless there was some sort of large underground "Northern California Kayak Fishing" derby that no one talks about.  I just checked for a www.nckf.org and it's the "Nothern California Kendo Federation".

Awesome pics. We went out in really foggy  conditions. I wouldn't have gone on my own but felt pretty comfortable going out with the group. Fishing was rough.  Got some bites on my swimbait but nothing stuck. Next time I need to add a stinger  hook at the end. The chartplotter worked wonders in my fishfinder and  I knew at all  times were I was during the derby.

Congrats to all who won the prizes.

A pic of Tin "VWtech" after winning the MacSki, the Bob Franko rod, and a Scotty Rod Holder.  He's one seriously lucky dude.  At the last Mendo Bendo Raffle he won a nice AT carbon paddle and a Hobie cooler/tacklebox.  But then again.... he usually buys about $40 in tickets per raffle.  A good investment for sure!!!

The other pic is of Angel "Pacifico" (with his namesake inhand) winning the Hibernet stowable landing net with the spare paddle attachment.

Congrats you lucky dogs!!!

Thanks to Bill and Chuckfor organizing such a great event.  Thanks to all the sponsors (and to the folks who arranged for the prizes).  I haven't fished one of these events for a while, so it was great to see everyone.  Congrats to all the winners!

It sure seems like the experienced fisherman are taking these tourneys pretty seriously these days.  I think the "rookie luck" (curse?) days may be numbered.  Just a hunch.

CONGRATS! Duane, Allen, Dave  :smt003 and all those at HMB this past weekend. I've really enjoyed reading all the threads and checking out the photos. Wish I could have been there. I was planning to attend right up until Saturday. Unfortunately I think someone put the mojo on me :smt011 and gave my luck to Duane. I'm sure the results would have been different if I were able to have made it. Don't count me out though. I will be haunting another NCKA event soon. By the way, I am the dreaded "ROOKIE" :smt077
