Title: Gimme Shelter 4 - Epic as Predicted - 5/14/2010-5/16/2010
Post by: Great Bass 2 on May 16, 2010, 07:07:03 PM
I will start the thread but all the cudos to Eric for pulling off the greatest hookup in NCKA history.  :smt006 It was EPIC although some slow fishing and super slow crabbing. Abing seemed good although I can't speak to that first hand. This is just a teaser and I will file a full report in a day or 2 when I fully recover.  :smt005 Here are some of my favorite memories...

My neighbor and home brew team mate Martin battling the Abking mystery fish for 45 minutes until he came unbuttoned.

Ab Man my Shelter Cove fishing buddie gaffing a ling on a kunz gaff.

The gopher that got the skunk off my boat.

Thanks Eric!  For another awesome Event.

Sledge and I formed the "Real" Dawn Patrol and went straight to the whistle buoy.  I started to experienced Deja Vu when I was following GB2 around the whistle buoy pulling in some big lings.  Thank Scott!

Pot luck was phenomenal, Jedmo's ceviche was excellent with some of the guacamole and chips.

The generosity and camaraderie among NCKAers is unparalleled!

Closed out the trip with a fun Sunday morning Ab dive with the 4 Js.  Joe, Jack, Jim and James.  Joe may post up some video...

Pics:

Just finished vacuum sealing this string, no release points for me.  :smt002

30" on the trough, I love the cleaning station at Shelter Cove.

James is my brother's long lost twin.

I didn't catch much from the yak but I dove Friday and Sat. The water was rough, dirty and cold. I got about 5 hours of diving in and it was a workout. We got our abs and had a good time seeing old faces. Thanks to everyone for a good time.

Cudo's to Eric for putting on a great tourney!  A few pics of yesterday and today.  Grumpy convinced the team to abandon the fleet at the whistle buoy and search out a rock pile.  Was a great idea.  We found some rocks between the green and red buoys.  Grumpy got mostly blacks and chinas.  While I seem to have the hot rod.  Got jig stuck on bottom and while trying to get it loose, Lingzilla (29.5")  hits the shrimp fly teaser hook and knocks loose the jig.  After a fearsome battle, I got a lip gaff on him and he joined the first fish I got, the nice cabbie.  Went on like that most of the morning, with only 3 blacks hooked and had to release the last and smallest one, as I was limited out on rockfish.  2 cabs, 2 greenlings, 1 ling, 1 large black, and gopher and black filled the limit.  The secret to lots of points was have at least 4 point count fish.  I thought I was be in the top 10 with the catch, but was happy to be numeral dos.  Met a lot of great people and I never thought I would say I was happy to miss winning a kayak by 27 points, but I am estactic that Big Jim beat me.  Fine gentleman with a lovely family deserves it more than I do.  He now has a lot safer kayak.  Not really good for an 8' person to fish a 9' boat.  Way too much good food at the potluck.  This old guy has lost a bunch of weight since Christmas,  and the potluck was not a  help.  The assistance of all those who helped those who decided to take a refreshing swim is noted and praised.  What a fine bunch of people and families.  Attached are some pics of Saturday and Sunday.  Thanks to Grumpy for loaning me the Outback and finding the fish.  Thanks to all for the camaderie. Also want to compliment the F&G warden who was checking us as we came in.  Courtesy and professionalism.  Nice job, warden.

Really still in shock...

Had an AMAZING time the whole weekend!!!!!

Got there Friday and went out with a big crew to go get some abs...hadn't dove in a real long time so had a blast getting back in the ocean and managed to get three decent abs pretty quick...was awesome to se Andy out there diving with his son...WTG!!!!

Joe/Bloodbath also picked an urchin and introduced me to the wonders of uni!!   :smt007 :smt007

Had abalone at least 4 different ways courtesy of FishMaster1, BaitnBeer and Dr. Fectavious...you guys rock!!!  :smt004

Chilled in the campground and met SO MANY cool people...my wife and I were really impressed and appreciative of how welcoming everyone was!! My daughter even announced on the drive home that Stoggie (or Stog as she called him) was her new favorite uncle!!!  :smt044

THANK YOU to everybody for making my whole family feel right at home!!!!!  :smt006

Met up with Team SharkBait (fishinmike and Captain Kayak/frank) in the AM...Frank had a few technical difficulties but we got out there and starting working the edge of the kelp in front of the hotels...fish were a little tight-lipped, but the surroundings and company more than made up for the slowish bite!!

Got a nice 19.5 inch Verm and a couple football Blacks and was feeling good about bringing home some nice fish for the wife...then picked up a 25 1/4 inch Ling and was super stoked to have an even nicer stringer!!

Then managed to pick up a 14 1/4 inch GreenLing and started thinking that even though my fish weren't very big, that the variety pack might rack up some nice points...released the GreenLing to get the CPR bonus (witnessed by fishinmike).

Then scored a 19 1/4 inch fat Cabbie!!  Snapped some pics, had CaptainKayak snap a few more (looking forward to seeing those Frank!!) and sent him back down as well!!

By now we had picked Gabe up after Montana went for an unexpected swim and had to head in early...really enjoyed fishing with Mike, Frank and Gabe...thanks guys!!!!

Spent a few more hours out there, but nothing much else was biting...headed in with Gabe and Stoggie and witnessed the mastery Stoggie has with his fishfinder...saw him stop, drop a jig, and catch 4 lings in 4 spots on the way back in!! Nice job Curtis!!!!!

Back at camp, snapped pics of the fish before cleaning them, and then ran the scorecard over to Eric...got there at 4:30 and was super surprised to learn that I was in the lead!!! :smt003

When it became official that I had won I was so happy I could've cried....I have been making my BigYak work for me but have been really wanting to get a bigger yak, but haven't been able to justify the expense..

The 10 inch Ab Shell is also SO beautiful that I just want to hang it around my neck so I can look at it all day!!  :smt007 :smt005

The mini hawg-trough is very cool as well, and will be keeping me company at work from now on!!!

The potluck and party were a BLAST, and I would have stayed up much later celebrating, but exhaustion and beer caught up with me and I passed out pretty early.. :smt009

Went out for abs this morning with JWR but conditions were a lot worse than Friday and I only managed one ab and one urchin...thank you JWR for accompanying me and helping me out!!

Francisco (zisco) helped me out my taking my BigYak back down for me...thanks buddy!!!!!!!

After a 6+ hour drive home I am beat, but wanted to say THANK YOU again to Eric for this super special unforgettable experience...it was an honor to be up there with everybody and I will never forget this weekend!!

Really looking forward to using my new yak, fishing with my new NCKA friends and enjoying future good times together!!!! Also very happy that I got NCKA buddies in my area to hook up with...even if they are A-hulls!!!!!   :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

I think I just need to come out of denial and admit that I am an A-hull at heart as well!!!!!! Al, Sara, Stoggie, Andy and Pat...you guys are good people and I feel very lucky to have gotten to meet you and hang out with you!!

Ok...here are some pics, and I look forward to seeing the ones that Frank, Al and everyone else took as well!!

You can see a bunch more at:

I woke up this morning feeling like I'd gone a couple rounds with Joe Frazier but at the same time wishing I was still up at shelter cove  :metal.       Grats to Bigjim!   I fished near him several times during the day and it seemed like he always had a fish on..     I managed to leave my bait in the  truck but had some luck with swimbaits and hex bar, went way up north and didnt find anything up there, came back and picked up my last few fish right in the area past the hotel where my first couple of the day were caught.    Ended up with 4 black rockies, all about 18 inches, and a decent cabbie.  Thanks SaltyDog for some squid that put the last black and the cabbie on my stringer!  Slow fishing but the day and the event were epic!

Thanks to Eric and all who helped put gs4 on!!

Im adding a few pix, just got a waterproof(hopefully) cam a couple weeks ago and this was my first try with it otw.  I need to work on my hog trough pix.. lol

Yeah, the variety and extra points for catch and release turned out to be key...saw PLENTY of fish way bigger than mine, but I guess I was fortunate enough to have the lucky combo!!   :smt003

Really enjoyed getting to meet and talk with you, and hope I get the chance to fish with you again soon!!

Thanks again to everybody for the great time and for the congratulations...wish I was still up there and not back at my desk!!  :smt002

place and coming home with the new kayak. I'm sure you'll be catching and
slaying a lot more fish from here on. That kayak fits you perfectly BTW. :smt001

The potluck was awesome. There was so much food that we didn't have any
more room for the other dish that kept coming as the party went on.

Thanks Andy(FishMaster1) for saving me some slice of abs. Thanks James
(AbMan) for sending me home with an ab and Andy( BaitNBeer) for the Uni.
Dude, the Uni was great.

I am glad I brought my family this year. They had a wonderful time, specially
staying at the Inn where you wake up in the morning right in front of the ocean.

Looking forward to next year GSV.

Wanted to add on that I got snagged A LOT on Saturday...and lost a fair amount of tackle down there...which in the end may have helped me out cuz I caught each fish on a different rig:

-Verm on Green Leadhead with White Splittail Scampi w/squid
-Ling on Red Leadhead with Rootbeer Splittail Scampi w/squid
-GreenLing on Ling/Hex Bar
-Cabbie on Blue LeadHead (that was part of the tournament goodie bag!!) with Dark Green Splittail Scampi with squid

Anyway, thought it was pretty cool that the piece of tackle that I got as part of my goodie bag scored me a sweet Cabbie!!  :smt004

Sincerely,

Jim

Nice job everyone. Congrats Jim.
Zilla and I couldn't make it, we had plans of our own.
I was hosting a wedding in my backyard and Zilla was the ultimate grillmaster. Tri tip, chicken, dogs and burgers, oysters on the 1/2 shell.
Not quite GS4 but came darned close.

Big Jim - Congratulations on the victory - couldn't have happened to a better guy.
Saltydog - great hanging with you - except for the seal thing :smt005

It was great to meet some new faces and see some old friends and the food this week was awsome.
I had so much fun I actually forgot to put my cabbie on the score card :smt013 oh well I really couldn't except the yak if I was lucky enough to win anyways.

Here's a pic of Lost Coast Jim working it.   (aka Saltydog...............aka Dances with Sea Lions)  :smt044

Watching Jim tame his lioness was hilarious. Whatever he was pissing was getting that sea lion fired-up.  She was ripping around and jumping completely out of the air within a foot on both sides of his yak time and time again.
Finally, with his free hand  :smt044, he's swinging at her with his club and gives her a love tap.

Jim had the ling mojo flowing!  I caught 4 underlings and couldn't catch a keeper to save the day. Jimmy landed 6 legal lings on derby day!

This was my first NCKA event, and it was an amazing experience! You know, I lurked on the forum for about a year before getting my kayak last May. Since then I've had the pleasure of meeting NCKAers on the water, and I check the board multiple times every day. In spite of nearly two years on the board, I didn't fully appreciate the true spirit of NCKA until GS4. I'm still awed by the camaraderie, the generosity, the brotherhood I enjoyed this weekend with people who previously were complete strangers. It was entirely unexpected, and something I've never experienced before. Thank you everyone for welcoming me to the group, for sharing food, drink, and fellowship! A special thanks to Eric for organizing an amazing event and for taking the time at the potluck to set me up with your grill when you had a hundred other things to do.

Congratulations BigJim on the BigWin! Well deserved. I'm stoked for you, bro! Looking forward to hooking up with you in Cap one of these days.

And, I can't wait for the next NCKA event!!!  :smt007

First and foremost, Thank You Eric/Abking. From the moment we arrived we were greeted with open arms by the campground staff and Jack (quite the character in a good way). As the campers started filing in the greetings continued.
Friday morning Team Cheap Hookers hit the water in search of salmon. The fog made things interesting and kept us wondering what would happen on Saturday if the fog remained. Congratulations John on the beautiful king that gave us all hope for a chance to catch one as well but not to be...not for lack of trying.
Saturday was like a big game of Where's Waldo with team mates searching for their brethren. Locals would cruise by in their boats and make comment as to the number of kayak fishers on the water....never seeing such a site in their lives. Listening to the radio as the day wore on it seemed as though everyone was having a great time being on the blue. Some of the landings after fishing were spectacular to say the least. The ones I witnessed were not so much from the surf but more from lack of attention after the dismount.
Later at the banquet the generous food and fun spirited conversation flowed. Just when you thought you could not eat another bite another dish would appear. Scott/GB2's cioppino put me over the edge....delicious! After the feast it was time for the awards. Congratulations Jim, GS4's Anger Of The Day! Well deserved too.
Eric's months of hard work putting together this event clearly showed. He even managed to coerce the weather gods into giving us safe fishable seas. Thank You Everyone for another Great Adventure both on and off the water.

What a trip!  Epic is right, this is the not to be missed event.  Eric really put this out of the park…again!  I am already gearing up for GMS 5!

I had a ball meeting everyone, and seeing people I met last year.  It was fun watching FishMaster and his boy diving.  That boys of yours is half fish!   Stoggie and Al, I owe you guys a Whiskey Flip!

BanjoTad, I had a great time.  I couldn’t ask for a better Yak partner out there.  Yeah I had to stick it out as long as I could, a couple fish could have put me in the running but it wasn’t to be.  Although fishing was not hot for me, the Ocean conditions were fantastic.  Shelter Cove is really an incredable place.  I got my three Ab’s on Friday, Yak fished Saturday and caught a mess of perch off the beach.  I had so much fun, I forgot to take a bunch of pictures like usual!  But here are a few:

Battleship TAD!

The launch, with my kayak all geared up.

Tad with a Bendo!

Tad hooks up again!

What a trip, it is going to take me days just to recover now!  Can’t wait to do it again!  By the way, hauling that trailer over the hill was an adventure in itself!  Not sure if I will do that one again, the hotel looked awful nice after that haul…….

Matt

Just got in...

Too tired to say much tonite.  Alshobie, Sara, BanjoTad, Fishmaster1 and chris decided to stay another night and didn't head for home until around 9 a.m. this morning (monday). Dead tired after 8 hours on the road in rain the entire way.

The trip was beyond expectations, more than twice as many people as last year, we ruled the campground once again.

Eric, I can't say enough, how grateful we all are for your efforts, you are a leader of men to be sure.

BigJim, wow, we still can't believe that you actually won, I can speak for everyone I spoke to, we couldn't think of a better guy to win that boat.
Thanks to you and your family for being so kind as well. Say hello to Valentina for stoggie.

BanjoTad, another awesome time with you this weekend.

Andy (FM1) love ya brother, you and chris made the trip one to remember, or forget, there was a lot of beer and other refreshments that have me in a fog still so chances are I may never remember most of it.

I will write more tomorrow after getting everything cleaned and put away.

So many stories to tell, and not one appropriate, those later, as for the rest, there are too many stories I was sworn to secrecy, so will take those to my grave.

stay tuned

stoggie

What a weekend. It started Thurs night with food poisoning (don't eat egg salad from work). At 4 am I was still puking. Three hours later with images of shelter in my head I figured if I can make the drive I can survive the weekend. Off I went...Had to take a nap in Willits. But made it to camp about 3ish. Pulled up and the camp was in full swing. THANK YOU #1 goes to Dr Habanero for letting me crash in the pop up. Man I needed some sleep that night! Woke up in the AM feeling 100% better! Hit the water and worked the kelp and out to deeper water had two massive take downs that had me fighting posture for 15 min each. Both broke off!!!! Hung with Dr Hab (both on the hunt for a cab). Ended the day with some nice blacks, a ling and a solid greenling.  (released two underlings and a few greenlings) I figured you'd need 4 fish to be in the running. Awards ceremony was great and I can't believe I came in 5th. THANK YOU #2 to all the peeps that didn't bother turning in fish/scorecard! Woke up the next AM fished for a few more hours for an underling and greenling upgrade. Hit the road around 1pm and home at 6pm. THE PRIMO THNAK YOU TO ERIC AND LISA for all the hard work. Considering I battled food poisoning, getting a pass from a wife that was 8 mo preg. I really felt great about the weekend. What a difference a year makes!

OH AND A MASSIVE CONGRATS TO BIG JIM!!!! Well F-ing deserved!

First off, let me give a big thank you to Erik for putting on a great event!  I had a great time at GS4, when I signed up I wasn't quite sure what to expect.  Having attended, I am definitely going to try and make it next year as well.  Great company, decent fishing, and a great potluck!  What more an you ask for?  I did okay fishing-wise, I don't have pictures but I had a ling and an assortment of blacks, gophers, greenlings and chinas.  It was great meeting everyone and I can't wait until next time!

Great reports so far, and thanks for the thanks!  I learned alot about how I can make next year even better.  Running the event was definitely challenging, but it has opened up a whole new aspect of my kayak life, and that feels great.  Thanks so much to everyone for being such an awesome group of positive and sharing people.  I often find myself describing kayakfisherpeople as being particularly conscientious and warm - this event was such an excellent representation of that.  Even the few participants who aren't regular NCKA'ers were taken up by the vibe we create as a group - well done, everyone!!  I was very touched by the special gift presented to me by the group.   :smt010 :smt007

Last year we had 45 kayaks on the water for the free tourney.  This year we hit 85 participants and there were 5 other paddlers there with our group - 90 boats OTW!!!  It was a sight to see, and our group represented the community well.  There were a few rough spots at the campground (this "spooner" character is on my list...   :smt012), so I've pledged to Jack, the owner there, that next year I'll put campground regulations in the tourney info and will staunchly support him and his business - all that means is that people will pay their share and not create any bad blood through their actions.  Enough on that.   :smt001

Big Jim - I had referred to him as "Rookie of the Year" a few months back because of his reports showing obvious fishing skill, his plating skills (and accompanying photos  :smt007), his way cool friendship vibe, and, without pushing anything heavy, his admirable devotion to charitable causes.  When I met him and shook his hand (that should be more accurately described...  how about, "when I put my hand in the vice"  :smt005) I was instantly validated in my assessment of this man.  It's one thing for me to root for a guy for being nice and having great reports, but when Jim won the tourney I was very pleased to see what seemed to be a universal agreement among the group - he deserved it, and not just because he needed a bigger boat.  Bravo, Jim - you are tops in my book, sincerely, Brother, sincerely.   :smt056

The bite was off, so many of us had trouble scratching out more than a few fish - what was cool though is that didn't seem to dampen the overall festive atmosphere.  John/Bird's salmon on Friday was a beauty, and it was an important confirmation of the potential we all had.  Unfortunately the salmon didn't cooperate and the water was too muddy for spearfishing, but we made the most out of what we had and all appeared to have fun.

I'm pretty beat, so I'll get back later with some more photos.  Hopefully I can come up with a good video, but I didn't get as much footage as I usually do - I'm sure others got some good stuff to share.  Keep the pics and stories coming.

Good Times.   :smt001

Extra thanks to Bluenative for those awesome homemade white-kastle style burgers. Thanks to bloodbath for putting us on the abs. Although the visibilty couldn't of been much worse, we managed to bring home the bacon. Thanks to the stormscrambler for delivering said bacon to my daughter in livermoore. Danglin, you were AWESOME on the guitar sunday nite. The hotel and staff were fantastic. I'll never go back to the campground.

Thank you Eric for a great time . I know the built up excitement you all talked about . I pulled up above the campground to see all the kayaks in the camp, really a unique scene .I was actually so exhausted from working extra time to make it that I took my time getting on the water and keeping an eye on my son (his first time) on the water.
He had one hook up but it came unbuttoned right away . Nolove for me but all was good. Thank you cajun for the kayak loan for my son .
Went out for abs with amphibian  a little while after was too muddy and rough but good experience , thanks Merv.
Slept in day 2 fixed the kids a big breakfast and sent them on their way .
Caught up with elongatus and fished most of the day with him and yakhopper basically had one fish on after another kept a pile of the biggest blacks. Thanks fishfarmer for the bait I think it made the difference .

It was really great meeting so many and putting faces to names

Really enjoyed GS4, my first NCKA event.  Had a great time meeting and with fishing with Mirmar and everyone else.  Hope to see you all again here in Shelter Cove.

For those who haven't heard, the secret collection taken for the "THANKS FOR ALL THE HARD WORK - ERIC CAMERA FUND" currently stands at $309.  I know many didn't have the opportunity to contribute since we were trying to keep it a secret from Eric.  If anyone still wants to make a contribution PM me for details.  Thanks again Kim for taking doing such a good job collecting.

I'll post Shelter Cove pictures and updates as the season continues.  Congrats Big Jim, sooooooo neat to see such a deserving guy get blessed with a new yak!

Not much I can say that haven't been said, but I still feel the need to thank a few people.

Thank you Eric for putting this great event together. I can go back to my normal work activities now.

Congrats to BIGJIM!!! Can't think of a more deserving guy for the top prize.

Thank you Bloodbath for sharing the ride. It made the 5 hr drive much more enjoyable. And also, pointing me to the abs was just... yor da man!

JWR, thanks for the chicken burrito. Joe and I were trying to figure out what to do about dinner cause we didn't realize the store had already closed.

Great Bass 2, the cioppino was awesome.

Sledge, sorry we couldn't meet up on Saturday. We're gonna have to "Get Some" next time.

And I totally enjoyed hanging with the gang I first met at SWS on RF opener, and meeting so many ppl that I've only read about. Didn't catch a whole lot of fish, but totally enjoyed the company. Can't wait for the next one.

I didn't take a whole lot of pictures, but thought I should at least contribute a few...

1) Sorry, can't remember the gentleman's name, but he's 2nd in points right behind BigJim.
2) BennettFromDanville and FishinMike
3) Great Bass 2
4) AbKing admiring GB2's butcher knife

6) carnage

Thanks again Eric!!!

My bad on the Spooner issue - he didn't do anything wrong.  For some reason I thought "Spooner" was a nickname of some kind for whoever destroyed the campground bathroom...  A skilled gumshoe I'm not...  Sorry, Spooner - you're off the hook.

Regarding Sledge...  That guy IS a beast.  I just got back from the Cove where he and I fished until sunset.  We finally got into a good bite.  Had beers and filleted fish until after 10PM.  It was quite a topper to the weekend.

You guys are all great.  I'm lucky to be able to call you all friends.   :smt001

Eric,
Again thanks for putting together a great event and pot-luck
We all had a great time and everyone is looking forward to next year, but I was wondering if the official standings will get posted? Obviousley Big Jim took the big prize (and well deserved) but what happened after that or does it really matter?
Also how did each of the teams do as combined groups (team standings)?
I was going to pass the info on to W.O.N. about this weekend but didn't have the above info.
Thanks,
Eric

Here is my detailed report. Arrived at Shelter Cove Thursday around 4 PM. Checked in at the Inn of the Lost Coast then walked Molly down to the launch ramp to check out the conditions. Surf and wind looked OK but the water was fairly stained. Walked up to the campground and ran into MattS. He was displaying his custom lures and I bought a 7” pearl swimbait which I thought might work well in stained water. Had dinner at the pizza place which is better under the new management.

Friday I took Molly for a long walk and ended up launching around 830. Ran into Otopelagic and family. Checked in my flight plan and headed south to drop my crab and shrimp traps. Conditions were nice but foggy. Set up my tray herring in a FBR with small fish flash and sinker release. Trolled from 25-50 down between the bell and whistle buoy for 3-4 hours for nada. Picked up my EMPTY traps and headed in. Ran into my team mate Dr Habinero on the way in and we decided to meet at 530 AM and launch at sunrise on Saturday. Had dinner with Karen at the restaurant next to the Tides and the food was good.

Saturday I didn’t sleep well and woke up at 230AM which is when I usually get up when I fish the central coast. Got to the launch at 515AM and my team mate Martin (Bennettdanville) was already there. Rigged my boat and waited for Dr Hab to show. AbMan, Sledge, Dominic and BlackAb soon arrived but Dr Hab was a no show. Called him on the VHF but no reply. Finally launched without him at 6AM. Worked our way out to the whistle buoy and things were slow. I was using a green thrasher with a grub teaser and picked up a large gopher around 730. The pressure was on because I needed to catch enough fish to fill a large pot of cioppino. Caught 2 large china rockfish and a blue and released 6 other assorted rockfish then switched to a large custom green scampi in search of bigger fish. Hung out with Martin when he was fighting the Abking mystery fish for 45”. I don’t what it is but it is big and won’t be defeated on 30# tackle. The bite started to pick up and I bagged a nice verm and copper, about 21” each. I called AbMan and Sledge to come over and we drifted north for about 5 minutes and AbMan bagged a nice ling. I lost my custom scampi and switched to my pearl swimbait which I bought from MattS. About 15 minutes later I hook a 28.5” ling on it. Thanks Matt!!! Figured I had enough fish for the cioppino so I switched to salmon trolling. I trolled around the whistle buoy and it felt like I was dragging a drift chute. As I got near the buoy a seal jumped off and started chasing me. Gabe was laughing as I started paddling as hard as I could but couldn’t get over 3MPH. Finally I turned around to scare off the seal and noticed my game clip with the ling on it was in the water.  :smt005 Apparently he jumped out of the tankwell when I was trolling. Luckily the furbag didn’t take a piece of it. Figured I had caught enough quality fish for the day and didn’t want to win bad enough to go looking for a greenling or cabbie so I headed in to pull my EMPTY traps one last time. Others who landed earlier said there was some surf and some yard sales so I called Martin and told him I was going to rig for a wet landing and wait for him so we could land together. He asked me if I thought rigging for a surf landing was necessary and I said “I would”. When you build your own rods and really love them, why take chances. Martin eventually found me and we headed in. I made it in clean and passed my DFG inspection. Headed up to the fish cleaning station and took some heat about my “big knife”. Met Karen and Molly at the campground and had the double jalapeno cheese burger and a beer. Man was it good. Unfortunately got to the dinner a little late and cooked up my cioppino. Drove home the next morning and was totally brain dead at work on Monday. Brought home a blue which is Karen’s favorite and steamed it Cantonese style. Also brought home a verm fillet which I sear roasted and served with a soy-ginger vinaigrette. Chef was right about fresh rockfish vs frozen and I won’t be freezing any until the end of the season. Fresh is way better.

Really the best NCKA event I have ever been to. Some folks I only see once a year at this event and it is really great to reconnect. I would like to thank the people of Shelter Cove for their wonderful hospitality. Hopefully they will invite us back next year. As soon as Mooch is gone, Sonny can start the countdown for GS5. :smt006

I will give my time up at Shelter Cove this weekend.

Arrived around midnight on Thursday night not many in camp yet but a few dranks afew and went to bed.

Friday- paddled out and dove in rough conditions with Sledge and was able to pull 3 abs one nice 8.5 then proceeded to drink way to many beers watching all come rolling in.

Saturday-missed alarm for fishing with Scotty and Bennet but was planning on fishing with EWB all day which we did. Hoooked up with 2 greenlings 12 & 14.25 , 3 Blacks  up to 17.5", 4 lIngs (3 under and 27.5" )  Cooked up some bean that were a littel on the hot side and again drank way too many beers.

Sunday- dove with the 4 J's( Jim , Joe, Jack and myself) rough condition and didn't even pull an ab) was thinking about going out fishing but just hung out.

Monday- hoping for "epic conditions" only to find cold rain and maybe ice out there , padddled out the the bell with Sledge and George and it was slow going one nice 19.5 and a variety of blacks that I took home. Got home late Monday night tired and anxious to see the family.

Tuesday - work and tired. Had to work a long day since i was gone so long. Oh well.. it was worth it.

It was great too see everyone up there and congrats Jim on the victory and can only look forward to next year all ready.

What an amazing event and display of Kayak fishing brotherhood we all shared this past weekend. I look forward every year to the annual pilgrimage to fish the cove and meet fellow NCKA'ers new and old. This was a very big gathering and my hat is off to all of you who made the journey safely to and from. You came from near and far but represented a unity that is most definitely the envy of fishing/kayaking clubs everywhere. My deepest regards goes to Eric for having the vision and making it happen for all of us. The attention to detail and flow of good vibes was icing on the cake for all the hard work you put into organizing the event, I mean the little clay Hawg troughs c'mon who would go to such ends other than Abking!

Big Jim-you winning that boat boosted all of us up and it couldn't have gone to someone more deserving or in need for that matter. Big thanks to Arron, Greg and the folks at Pro-sports center for their sponsorship. That Keg o' brew was off the hook good, my newest favorite libation.

The fishing wasn't as good as previous season openers but all the same the cove will never disappoint. My first fish of the year was like every year, a ling on white grub, but it was no point grabber so back it went. Our teams efforts at salmon trolling were stymied by midget blacks with attitude. We covered alot of ground (probably too much) and boated enough fish to convince our wives it was worthwhile to let us go, but we had a dismal showing for the tourney. My teamates brought no cameras and nothing to measure with except a freebe at the launch from the fish and game guy. I did get a shot of Graham releasing one of his greenlings while Abking looks on in the background

The Saturday potluck was all the hype and then some. The ceviche and smoked chicken and little fish shaped desserts were so friggin scrumptious. How about that Cioppino, my god I've never tasted something so decadently yummy. I made and absolute pig of myself on that stuff. I never had it before but it will be first on my list at future NCKA potlucks. GB2 I bow down!

I would be remiss if I didn't congratulate everyone and give big props for the standard of safety we all observed on and off the water. Team fishing was a good idea. The radios worked well for communicating with teams and for coordinating the few incidents that occurred. Leashes and tie downs are a fact of life for kayak anglers carrying expensive equipment but so should knives and quick releases be.

I look forward to seeing and fishing with all of you again next year at GS V

Awesome pics, Andy.  Kris with the salmon and Bird's stoked grin in the background are priceless, and Dr. Fektavius out at the Whistle is sooooo cool when you've been there and recognize the long way out that it is.  I heard that was George's first legal ling - WTG, Doc!!!

When I was driving to the Cove yesterday to pickup my gear and maybe go out OTW I was feeling pretty nostalgic and emotional about the trip.  This kayak tournament is a special thing, but it's just an offshoot of a much more significant force.  NCKA has brought people together, and they're not just any people - they're kayakfishermen, and they are one of the finest groups of people on this planet.  I'm so proud to be a part of this group, and I hope everyone involved in our sport and our club recognizes how special what we have is.  I've caught tons of big fish and abs, but the interactions with people from this board are more important to me.  Thanks, everyone, and keep up the great vibe.   :smt001

Sorry for the late post guys.  I was tired as we got back real late on Monday and had to get ready for the Texas trip on Tuesday.  Anyway I'm posting from Texas and it's pass midnight here.  Thank you Eric for another epic GS's hookup and looking forward to next year.  Here are some of the pictures I took during the trip included the "mini pot luck" on Sunday night.

Tournament Results:

Big Jim took first overall with a 25.25" ling (126.25 points), 19.5" rockie (136.5), 14.25" greenling released (167.75), and 19.25" cabezon released (141.75), for a total of 572.25 - nice AOTY boost!

CalifBill Mckee took second with a 29.5" ling (147.5), 17" rock (119), 14" greenie (154), and 18.25" cab (127.75), for a total of 548.25 - he would've had to release all but the ling to have beat Big Jim, and if he would've released all of his fish he'd had been AOTY and SOTY - unprecedented!!!   :smt005  Just having some fun here - no judgments intended!   :smt001

Here's another angle - if Big Jim wouldn't have released any fish (he released two), and CalifBill would've released just the rockie or cabbie, he'd have won.  Again, I'm not making any judgments (I'm stuffed on fish right now!   :smt005), but I am saying that as a tournament strategy, C&R pays if it's part of the scoring scheme.

Eric Kaai took third with a 19" rock (133), 15" greenie released (176), and 19.75" cab released (145.25), for a total of 454.25 - it's clear that Eric would've won with a ling...  Nice work.   :smt001

James Gustin / Dr. Habanero took 4th with all but a cab for 424.75.

Eric Berg / EWB took 5th with all but a cab for 410.5.

Allen Leepin / Otobepelagic took 6th with all but a greenie for 409.5, and he got the highest catch and release only score which earned him "SOTY" or Sportsman of the Day.  He was awarded with a 10.5" abalone with a custom ceramic tag naming him SOTY for GS4, 2010.

I explained that evening that I had considered awarding sportsman of the day to someone who did something heroic on the water, but that I'd also originally thought of giving it to whoever scored highest with C&R.  I may not have been clear about it, so I want to be here:  The entire group, through our participation in a tournament where teams and radios are required, and due to the fact that "we" successfully aided whoever was in need, actually earned "sportsman of the day", so that's why I decided to fall back on my original thought about C&R.  That said, I do not look at the awarding of this for C&R with anything but respect and admiration - I didn't mean to make it sound like "well, we didn't really have a hero, so I'll give it to the highest C&R score..."  Allen's diligence in gently handling fish, handing out Shelton descenders, always pushing a good ethic and a good vibe...  these traits ARE heroic to me.  Well done, Allen.   :smt056

I do have the scoreboard, but I discarded the scorecards, so feel free to ask about the info on the scoreboard.

7th was James Cameron the AbMan
8th was Don "Danglin" Anglin
9th was FishFarmer Ben Peterson
10th was Stormscrambler James Storm
11th was Terry Saufferrer
12th was John Keane, Bird the Salmon God
13th was Jim Jackson the SaltyDog

Some others have mentioned it but wanted to bring it up again, big props to the vendors & individuals who pitched in for prizes. Not sure what was donated outright but I'm sure there were some steep discounts to make it happen. Ab, any chance we could get a recap of the vendors who participated.

And, once again, major props to the folks who put in their valuable time and energy to make this such an incredible event. Can't say enough about Eric's generosity in sharing this amazing place and putting all the extra effort into this event, but also much appreciation goes to the other folks behind the scenes who helped out - you know who you are.  :smt004

Thanks, also, to Jack (with his mini wine bottles never too far from reach) and Shelter Cove Campground.

And Congrats again to BigJim, although we're gonna miss the spectacle of you paddling around in that tiny little tub!  :smt003

Good point, Aaron - I've been remiss in not naming Greg Mouton, our own "cajun" (previously spedrcr) as THE MAN behind most of the prizes.  Greg arranged for me to get the Trident at cost and also went to bat for the free paddle, safety kit, kayak locks and a bunch of prizes last year too.  I owe you big time, Greg, and the group totally appreciates your dedication to making the GS series all that it is.  Bravo, Greg.   :smt001

I'm interested in offering Pro Sport/Outdoor Store the exclusive sponsorship of next year's tournament!   :smt003

OK I apologize for being so late to post and piling on what everyone else has said.  So I thought I would add some different perpsectives.

It turns out that I actually won the event.  Moles were 400 pts per inch and this baby (with tail) went a solid 5 inches.  But I'm such a nice guy and didn't want to disrupt the vibe I let everyone keep their prizes.

Besides I don't think anyone could tolerate BigJim in his clown car yak any longer.  There was talk of making him wear a Bozo wig and clown make up if he kept it up.

He didn't mention his one other prize he got on Sunday.  He let me dive for abs with him because he took pity on me because I forgot my float.  While diving he lost his weight belt.  About 20 minutes later I found one that had been down long enough to begin to grow fur.  I humped it out of the depths a few feet at a time to a wash rock.  Back at the beach he declared it nicer than the one he lost (it fit too).  So he was still upgrading equipment.  I hope he bought a lottery ticket on the way home because his luck was running hot.

The photo of this little cutie was shot Friday afternoon.  She has a marshmallow in each cheek and one in her hand and she didn't want to hear anything from me about sharing ;-).  She certainly wasn't going to wait for the S'mores.

This last photo is of the cleaning station carnage around 1:00 Saturday.  Some good dinners coming off that table.  Of course I forgot to photo my 20"cab so I don't even have an addition to my AOTY file

All said a fantastic weekend.  This was my 3rd NCKA outing and they just keep getting better.  I can't wait to see what lessons learned that Eric has that he will incorporate into GS V but I plan on being there.

Sweet pics Sonny!!! Thanks for sharing!!

Eric, thanks for posting all the results...totally agree that getting the variety and using CPR seems to be key in getting max points in the AOTY format...a healthy dose of luck doesn't hurt either!!   :smt002 :smt044

Cajun, thanks again for all your support of the tourney...really enjoyed camping next to you and getting to chat about NOLA and Marrero....WHO DAT!!   :smt005

I have been getting the boat ready and will be heading out Sunday with Porky, Stoggie and Zisco to get it wet and hopefully bloody...the BigYak will also be coming along but my good buddy Erik will be riding it instead of his usual SIK!! I will get some pics of somebody else in it!!   :smt044

Thanks again to NCKA and everybody for allowing me to be a part of all this.

I really appreciate it.

Jim

Sonny, I'm sure you'd gladly share this yourself, but I'll give it my best to save you the trouble...   :smt044

I think I had just soaked the firewood with lighter fluid so we could spark up the Weber bonfire - I lit a corner of a piece of wood, and, thinking that small flame would readily spread to all of the fuel-soaked wood, I blew on the flame to make it spread.  Well, this wasn't gasoline, so I succeeded in blowing out the flame!  Sonny, in what had to be one of the quickest quips I've ever experienced, and of course it was accentuated by his oh-so-unique accent, instantly rattles off, "Oh, you give a good blowjob!"  And that was it - we were ROFLOAO.     :smt044

I know it's way late, but I had some minor technical difficulties. Here goes.

MontanaN8V, Thanks for dragging me along. I can't wait for Albion.

Big Jim, Thanks so much for letting me fish with you and your crew after MontanaN8V splashed. I'll fish with you anytime. The Trident couldn't have gone to anyone more deserving. You and your family are great people. Are you going to Albion?

Bloodbath, It was great hanging out with you. You're a cool dude. I'll see you at the next event.

BaitNbeer, The uni was awesome. It was great seeing you again. We'll have to go fish Paradise Cove again soon.

Stoggie, I had a great time hanging out and fishing with you. Thanks for the help too.

BlackAb, Way to go on the event. It was a first class event and you're a first class guy. Thanks for everything.

I met so many great people and had an awesome time. The food way over the top. I was so stuffed I was afraid to move or I'd have popped.  :smt010 I learned a few things that will make next year even better. I'll be better prepared. I can't wait.

In return for the generosity of everyone, I think for next GS5, I will help compile a gear bag of stuff for people like myself that lost everything.  So, keep that in the back of your minds guys, and spare or old gear, set aside, and we can have a splash dog prize for most poetic dismount!

Was looking back through the original thread to see the name of the store where Greg/Cajun worked and found this....

Look at the writing on the wall behind the boat!! MIRACLES HAPPEN!!!!!!!

Truly was a Miracle that I managed to bring this beautiful boat home!!!!

Hope that maybe this Miracle might serve as inspiration for anybody (like me) that felt like they never had a chance in the world of winning anything in a tournament with so many amazing/experienced/superior anglers...

If you don't give it a shot you are for sure guaranteed not to catch any fish or win anything....if you go out and try your best, you never know...a Miracle just might happen!!!!!!

 :smt001

Thanks again to Eric, Greg/Cajun, and everybody else for being a part of my Miracle!!!!

Sincerely,

Jim

A major heartfelt thank you goes to Eric for hosting such a swell event. Pam and I got to meet, camp, party and fish with the best group of people imaginable. We just arrived back to the mainland last night from a week in Kauai. So now we can catch up with our NCKA friends and posts. dave...
