Kayak Sailing / Re: Hobie Tandem Island clone for $3k...

Awesome. Thanks, Eric.

It turns out I was "misinformed" about where I'll be staying. I'll actually be in Oceano/Pizmo Beach area. I'm currently researching:

Pizmo
Avila Beach
Point San Luis

Avila is very launchable, protected from the north/nw.  Pismo/Oceano is a little more difficult its a very shallow beach so it has some shore break.

i've never done well there trolling....water is too green in my experience

General Talk / Re: Why are pedal kayaks so heavy?
« on: September 24, 2021, 11:59:35 AM »
Native's affiliate Hurricane had a thermoform pedal drive boat a couple years back. Problem was the flex from the drive made it so the drivewell needed to be reinforced with a poly insert and it added weight so it ended up only being a few lbs lighter.  To handle the stress from a pedal drive you really need a fairly thick poly hull, and there's really a minimum weight that you can come up with with the materials we currently use in kayak manufacturing.  There's just no such thing as being able to build a 50lb 12foot long kayak with a certain minimum hull thickness.

My manta ray is probably right on the threshold for the lowest weight a 12' kayak can go. These days more guys are truck bed or trailering a kayak so the manufacturers dont really see the need to invest in that cartop market - simply they don't really sell as much as the bigger ones do.

General Fishing Tips / Re: SC Wharf Macks
« on: September 20, 2021, 09:07:59 AM »
After seeing three of my friends catching a total of 500 mackerel last weekend from a boat, I had to try it for myself. My good friend Thuy took me and my cousin out on his 15 foot aluminum boat out of SC. The bite was pretty consistent from 630-1000 am from right outside of the harbor to the pier. Per Thuy, mackerel were not stacked like last weekend and they were scattered. We were constantly on the move and got most of the fish by trolling. In total, three of us caught 268 jack mackerel and 6 pacific mackerel.

Nice haul. What is the preferred method of trolling? I have thought about attaching a 1 pound weight and a flasher to a sand dab rig (12 hooks!), but kind of a moot point since I haven’t gotten to fish areas with them this year.
imagine hooking 12 feisty macks on a sanddab rig....that sounds like a complete pain in the ass  :smt005

CA Regulations / Re: Spiny Lobster Season
« on: September 10, 2021, 08:03:13 AM »
good to know, thanks for breaking that down.  Funny, I lived in SD for 15 years, and now (living in NorCal) getting ready for my first spiny lobster season.

question, does it make sense to get out there for the midnight opener?  Also, I've heard that you're more likely to have success when it's dark - any truth to that?

Thanks,
Brian.
its an overnight game. hooping during the day doesn't really work. best of luck and be very safe.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Learning to Fly Fish in the Sierra
« on: August 16, 2021, 01:30:13 PM »
Spent most of last year living in Twain Harte before moving back to my home town.  I can say that you can have endless fun on the Stanislaus River, and do some camping and fly fishing, as well as hit some of the lakes in the area as well.  Not sure if it's smokey or not, not following the conditions up there.  But I can look up some of the turnoffs if your interested.
definitely smoky. was up there yesterday.
