Title: Dogs on Kayaks.
Post by: M.A.S.HAT on November 27, 2017, 07:53:26 AM
I wasn’t sure where to put this topic, so sorry if it needs moving.

I just got a new puppy.

And I would like to train her to ride on my kayak with me.  Do any of you take your pups with you?  How did you train your dog to do it?  What are the pros and cons of taking a dog with you?

I have taken my dog Miles many times on the ocean, bay and lakes too.  I didn't train him except show him where he should be.  Miles is about 50lbs and I have a Hobie Outback.  He usually rides on the front.  You need to have a dog that can sit still and also be able to pull your dog aboard without falling in .  You want to be careful with your hooks and your balance when your dog moves to one side or the other.  That being said, Miles has been with me over 2 miles offshore and we have caught many salmon, rockfish, lingcod, crab and perch together.

That’s great to hear as most of my fishing happens in the ocean.   Do you have a life jacket for Miles?  I know that dogs are excellent swimmers, but the seas can be pretty rough at times.

Also, how does he do when you are paddling through breakers?  Does he swim along side, or is he pretty sure-footed(sure-pawed)?

Looks like a pit or pit mix.  I have a pit, and they are really dense (in the water).  They don't float very well, or for very long.  A life jacket might help.
