The Islander crew are making their way back home after 3 days of incredible fun - and making history as the first to kayak fish the Cortes Bank via mothership.

The Bank is an incredible place, a set of kelp beds and rocks 100 miles out in the middle of nowhere. You'd never have known it on Friday, when the seas were calm, the sun warm, and the bonito and yellowtail and bonito came to play (it was a bone zone - those things were thick!). I'll let the photos tell the rest of the story.

Day 1

Joyful redemption

Day 2 - Not quite as nice out there

Playing in the swells rolling across the infamous Bishop Rock big-wave break

Twenty minutes later  :smt103

Day 3 - San Clemente Island

The payoff!

Thanks for the great report.

I thougth I was loosing it the first time I saw someone out there catching waves 100 miles off shore.

What an epic spot though, I have only been there a few times, but it was always worth the trip.  And on the Islander too, great boat.  Was Captain Mike running the boat?

Thanks for sharing,

Norm

Yep.  I was able to avoid erasing my yellowtail skunk.   I even went so far as to catch a lovely little cabezon.  I also managed ocean whitefish, sheepsheads, silly little calicos and enough (more than enough) bonito to keep up the motivation to keep looking for my first yellowtail from a kayak.
As Paul mentioned, Day 1 was the dream day.  Day two went from annoying to darned real.  The following pictures show 1.  What the Islander looked like as we drifted back on the second day…those are its booms over the swell.  2.  Randy’s first bonito.  3.  My pretty little cabezon.  4.  Chris’s Jackpot yellow tail.

I may not be able to catch a yellowtail but I can find cabbies anywhere it seems.

Pat I'm glad to see you and Randy took some "mental health" days to play in the Pacific. Even if the Yellows didn't cooperate for you, it looks like it was a good time.
