Hey everyone, Just got on the site today and have spent the better part of my day lost in forum post. This seems like a great group of people and I look forward to hooking up with some of you soon. I own a kayak shop in Lodi and one of my customers told me I had to check out this site. I had no idea we had such an awesome community of kayak fisherman (and women). I'm in the process of outfitting my Cobra Marauder, and I'm hoping to take it out for the my first fishing trip this weekend. I plan on putting in at King Island in Stockton and fishing White Slough. My brother just brought in a 9 lb bass a couple of days ago, and I'm hoping to get in on some of that action!

For sure. I have a lot of paddle time in the ocean, but I have never fished. My dad is going to lend me a rod and reel and some other goodies for salt fishing. I think it would be awesome to paddle out the gate and fish some of those coves. Does anyone do that trip?

Welcome!  Another option is to launch at one of the SF beaches or Muir, etc. on the other side.

Thanks for the heads up. I have never launched from the south side of the gate. I always put in at Horse Shoe Cove and paddle out during a ebb and return during a flood. (Or at least that is the goal) But I suppose it is a lot different in a 16' Sea Kayak. I can't wait to get my Marauder out there and see how it does in the rough stuff. What are you guys catching when you fish out there? :shark

I don't fish the gate because of the current, boat traffic and water pollution. Back in the day, I used to fish tHe area from shore for perch, rockfish and greenling. From a kayak you could target stripers, halibut and salmon, rays, sturgeon and sharks. Most target rockfish and there are better places to fish than the gate. As mentioned, look in hookups and attend the events and you will meet lots of people. For rockfish, a shrimp fly rig and some cut squid or anchovies is all you need to get started. See you out there. :smt006

Welcome to the madness.

This summer should present plenty of opportunity to join in on some outings in the ocean. When rockfish season opens there will be regular hookups posted. That's where I would start. You can learn so much from these guys when you can see it first hand.

What kayak shop?  :smt006
Never argue with an idiot. They'll just drag you down to their level, and beat you with experience.

I own Headwaters Kayak shop in Lodi. We do sales, rentals, wine tours, and guided trips in the Delta. I'm also really excited about getting into fishing kayaks. That seems to be the fastest growing section of the market for me. I sell Cobra, Emotion fishing kayaks for now.
