 SPOOKY STUFF.

I got this in an email from our group up here "The Chico Paddleheads"

Rafters watch the forest explode from their camp on
the beach
I just got off the Salmon River. We had launched last
Tuesday - and on Friday we entered the explosive
Rattlesnake Fire at Lemhi Bar.

About 4:30 p.m., we reached the bar, and a firefighter
yelled to get to river right and stay there, so we
eddied out below the bar and watched the inferno. We
received no further instruction, so we just sat in
that eddy for about one and a half hours before the
fire jumped to our side.

The fire had jumped the river right above and below
us, so we watched it to determine if it was
threatening. But soon, Lemhi Bar exploded in
skyrocketing flames, and our eddy was no longer safe.
We decided it was time to risk what awaited us
downstream.

As we left the eddy, a fireman ran down to the river
and told us to stay in the center of the channel and
we should be out of the fire area in about 4 miles. As
it turned out, the fire was very active well below us.

We left the eddy and floated by roaring flames on
river right. I have some great shots of a U.S. Forest
Service structure (an A-frame building) across from
Five Mile Bar as it glowed beautifully and then
collapsed. We landed at Five Mile Bar at 7:30 p.m. and
were encouraged to sleep on the beach that night.

We sat in a line, mesmerized, feeling privileged, safe
and saddened for those who had suffered losses. And
before us we witnessed a spectacular display up- and
downstream, a 180-degree view. It looked like lava in
the night as fires and embers flowed and spread. It
was devastatingly beautiful.

We watched the pyrotechnics until midnight. Trees
exploded and spiraled downslope, starting more fires.
Rocks smashed and crashed toward the water's edge.
Some people went to bed with wet bandannas on their
faces.

There were 14 in our party, which included three kids
and a 70-year-old. Most of us were in the
natural-resources field, so we were excited to be in
the belly of the beast. I'm a fish biologist with
Rocky Mountain Research Station in Boise, and I was
with Vicki Saab from the lab who studies fire and
cavity nesters.

We also had Canadian geologists, a freshwater
ecologist and some folks from The Nature Conservancy.

Quite a trip, once in a lifetime, and truly a
privilege - especially that we got out unscathed.
Well, one of us did suffer a minor burn from a wafting ember

The fires in that area can start out of nowhere. I just found out yesterday that my favorite elk hunting spot in Warm lake, Idaho has and is all burned. I'm bummed, I am moving back at the end of the month and had big plans, but like most of my plans these days they have changed. Going back at this time of year I will have to buy a Out of State License and tag at a grand total of 1G. I have serious reservation with all these fires.

That is so intense!! I could only imagine what that would be like, what would be even better would to be on hte USFS BAER Team that gets started right after big fires to evaluate for potential landslides, and resource changes as the forests regrow...
Less Mental than before, Still savage AF tho <3

Hey Skyboy,

Don't worry about your elk spot. By next year that burn will be the greenest spot around and will pull elk in for years. I like to hunt recent burns. I have a spot that burned a few years ago and it's the best elk hunting around now. It has the highest quality forage on the whole mountain.
So I'm packing my bags for the Misty Mountains, where the spirits go...........
