Hi there,

storage is a luxury in the Bay Area and I unfortunately do not have the space nor do I want to pay hundreds of dollars to store my kayak. So, I am wondering if storing the kayak permanently on top of my car (Honda Civic) with the appropriate roof rack + other equipment?

I am thinking of something like this here: https://wmastore.com/Hitch-Mounted-Truck-Bed-Extender-Ladder-Rack-Kayak-Canoe-AMBEDEXT.htm

Thoughts/ recommendations would be much appreciated!

Cheers,
Seb.

If you can afford to replace it every few months from theft, it should be OK.

Bad idea that is not meant for long term storage.

Much more rare than you think.  While they do exist it's a big pain.  Imagine having to pickup the kayak the night before, or the morning of.  Then dropping off.  And the whole cleaning aspect...

BTW freelancer27 - I've totally thought of this as a solution.  So you aren't the only crazy one  :smt005

If you store this, I assume you have a reliable and safe place to park?
I would recommend storing it upside down, and get two of these, one on each side:

https://www.amazon.com/Kryptonite-York-Fahgettaboudit-1415-Chain/dp/B001SMUB7G/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1548188852&sr=8-3&keywords=new+york+lock

Any time I store my TI overnight - which I do for days or sometimes weeks at a time during salmon season, I use two of those heavy chains, plus a cable and U-lock.

I also have a Tile tracking device inside the TI:

https://www.amazon.com/stores/node/11316243011?_encoding=UTF8&field-lbr_brands_browse-bin=Tile&ref_=bl_dp_s_web_11316243011
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

I store mine on its side alongside my apartment.  It really doesn't take much space.  Anyone could in theory walk back there (no gate) so I chain lock it and keep seat/mirage drive in my apartment.

I wrap it in a tarp once it's dry so it doesn't look like anything in case someone snuck around to the back of my place.

Luckily the neighbor next to me has motion sensor lights and cameras that are very obvious.  There's no way someone could take it when I'm home as you would need to pull my car out to get it out and it would make a ton of noise.

My neighbors are pretty nosey so hopefully they will call me if they see anything.  Fingers crossed.

Where you park at I could use a new used kayak? :smt044

Bad idea.... a lock only keeps an honest person honest.

Let us know if you do go that route so we can start a $$ pole on how fast it disappears.

Where I live, nobody would take my kayak if I left it in the middle of my drive unlocked. Any potential thief would be (justifiably) afraid of getting shot at by some crazy hillbilly. So, I think it all depends on where you live and park...

Unless you have a clown car I don't see why you would need the extender. I carry a 16' kayak on a Subaru Outback from time to time and it is fine up there. I leave my 14' on top my truck year round, night and day, and it is fine for storage. I do live in a semi safe area and do not worry about theft also.
