Been in southern waters after I learned to Kayak here in Northern waters. Big Difference with emphasis on BIG........ Polepole just put up a new section called safety first. Just a suggestion.

... uhm... yeah... understand

I actually have been up north already too.... in 15 foot swell and all...  CL is actually one of the toughest launches down south, it is as tough as any launch up north... 2/3 the time its not worth trying to get out there....

I already have all that safety gear, + some

I'M NOT SURE HOW BAD THE SWELL IS AT DON PEDRO, NEW MELONES OR THE DELTA BUT I'LL BECAREFUL JUST FOR YOU FRANKFISH, lol

Is this an attempt at being funny? Being in 15 foot swells that is! Good luck to you but, personally I don't think you and I would hit it off.

Sounds like famous last words... :smt044

Welcome to the madness.  :smt006 I used to dive SCUBA at CL (about 1/4-mile out from the blue-roof condos) in the late 70's.  It was our secret spot for abs and calico bass.  Almost broke my neck there bodysurfing.   It is a tough launch site.

No joke Frankenfish, swell that day was 10-12 foot average and as big as 15 feet at times, out of moonstones north of San luis obispo. I was litterally able to surf my kayak about 100 yards at a time if paddled really hard with the swell.

To answer your implied question.... I'm not stupid enough to try a straight on surf launch in that kind of swell.

At moonstones the launch is south west facing and the swell was out of the north west, and you have a little bit of protection from a point, though its a scary launch your first time. You go out ~75 yards then parrellel the beach 200 yards before going out beyond the break, there is a trench where there is no break. I was scared my first time there, and would not have attempted it had i not been following RHYAK. We had check weather and swell forcasts on our marine radios. If a south swell picks up you have to swim in... ask anacapabob about that....

But yeah i know when not to go out. I had a 5 day camping trip to big sur where i was limited to trout fishing and hiking as was 40 mph wind waskicking up every day at 8 ish. I did however explore every trail down to the ocean between plaskett creek and Lime kiln so ive looked at a bunch of your Nor cal launches...

But the the part about swell in Melones, don pedro and the delta were just me being sarcastic your comments lead me to believe you did not read my intro, or whole crash segment. I dont know but in 50 launches/landings combinations in flat to 5 foot swell, lets say 2-3 on average i think 2 crashes is a pretty good record.

im done disscusing safety

Not trying to be a dick...

To use a skiing analogy
I just dont want to hear some blow hard tell me about how their black diamond are steeper, have more moguls, and are harder, and then lecture me on safety after i admitt had a few falls while skiing.

ESPECIALLY after I've skiied double Blacks, and yellow triangles, and just moved to a green hill.

Perhaps rethink your approach?  You've got nothing to prove to us.  Go with the flow ...

Welcome.

welcome aboard Garet!
I don't have any salt water experience (except in a boat) but plenty of high Sierra fresh water!  I fish mostly the highway 88 corridor high elevation lakes.  put my Hobie Pro Angler in 10 different lakes this summer/fall.  you live close to some kick ass trout lakes!
