General Fishing Tips / Suggestions for Dungy Snare fishing and other fish
« on: November 10, 2019, 06:24:54 PM »
No school tomorrow, Veterans Day, so I'm taking my son fishing.  I'm thinking of Dungy snaring at Baker Beach, I've had success there last year, but am considering Rockaway or other surf fishing spots.  Any suggestions?

General Fishing Tips / Costa Rica Fishing - Parque Nacional Tortuguero
« on: August 09, 2019, 09:00:32 PM »
My family and I are spending 10 days in Costa Rica observing sea turtles.  We will be located on the Carribean Sea side at Parque Nacional Tortuguero.  Does anyone have tips on fishing in the area; where I can find equipment, what to fish for, etc?  Thanks

General Talk / C-Tug Kayak cart mod for sand
« on: July 07, 2019, 08:51:58 PM »
Anyone try to modify their C-Tug Kayak wheels for sand?  (I don't have the Sand trakz wheels and I don't want to spend another $100+ for a new cart) I don't quite understand the physics of how a wheel can move through a sand with the least resistance.  I believe minimizing PSI, pounds per square inch, is key and I've read the wheel should "conform" to the shape of the surface thereby reducing the berm that is created from a wheel that has dug down in to the sand.  I thought of adhering a half sphere of pool noodle to the outer circumference of the wheel.  I also thought of retro fitting a pneumatic ballon tire but this would require a new axle. Any advice would be appreciated.  :smt006

General Talk / Downrigger weight replacemet
« on: June 22, 2019, 10:19:23 PM »
Simplycook, Kevin, and I were fishing Bolinas yesterday when I snagged my donwrigger weight on a reef (Today, after viewing Navionics, I discovered I was primarily fishing over a very reefy portion off Bolinas.  Duh!)

Any recommendations on a 4lb downrigger weight?  I see they range in price from $45- $15.  I believe I had a Cannon Flash weight. Amazon wants $43.

Of yeah, and if you read this far you deserve a fishing report Kevin: 2 keeper size halibut, returned back to see, 4 keeper dungies.  (The crazy mo fo decides to take 2 Danielson cage trips and the water was not calm by any means.) Mike: 2 take home Croakers. Sad to admit but they were delicious breaded in Panko bread crumbs and fried up. :smt001

General Talk / Battery connections
« on: June 14, 2019, 09:11:20 PM »
I have a very tenuous battery connection that finally snapped during my last ocean outing.  Luckily, visibility was good and I was not far from the launch when it happened the so I didn't have to rely on way points to get back home.

The battery cables that came with my Lowrance FF are super thin.  Any advice at all would be appreciated: connectors, how to route battery wires, securing the battery box to the kayak so it doesn't slide around(I believe this to be the culprit to the broken wire).

Thanks y'all

General Talk / Anchoring system for Revo 13
« on: January 18, 2019, 08:44:13 PM »
Any of you have experience with anchoring a Revo 13.  Yes my intention is to fish for sturgeon and Yes Eddies catches are super inspiring.   Duh sturgeon slayer. :smt001 :smt006

I've installed the Yak attach anchor trolley on 2 of my former kayaks but was looking for a simpler solution for my sturgeon dreams.

Gonna try launching from Rockaway for some crabbing.  It will be a new launch in probably not so tame conditions.  Planning to launch a little after 7A.

12/21@7:00A. Conditions are fantastic...if you like to surf. :smt005 Decent swell, drizzling, and the tide is coming in. Gonna wait till 8:30 to see if conditions improve.

This evening we were out for a lovely walk in the cool, fresh air when our dog, Bear,  bolted after what I thought was a cat.  I then found Bear walking in a tight circle and noticed a strong odor that smelled like acetone, really.

We than applied Natures Miracle Stain & Odor eliminator with a wet rag and then brought him in to the house for a bath.  My nostrils are so saturated with skunk spray I don't think he smells that bad but the other family members says he still reeks.

What do you use in this instance?  Per my internet perusing is 3% peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap really the proven winner?

There are some old threads on this device but am curious if people have successfully used this and have
recommendations on mounting to a Hobie Revo 13.

General Talk / Domoic Acid - Health warning crab from Bodega Bay
« on: November 29, 2018, 09:02:08 AM »
Maybe most of you know about this warning issued by the Ca. Department of Public Health, Nov. 1, 2018.  But I didn't until last night.  https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/OPA/Pages/NR18-054.aspx

CDPH is advising not to eat the viscera of Dungeness crab caught near Bodega Bay due to elevated levels of Domoic Acid.

Here are a list of symptoms from the report ....Symptoms of domoic acid poisoning can occur within 30 minutes to 24 hours after eating toxic seafood. In mild cases, symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, headache and dizziness. These symptoms disappear within several days. In severe cases, the victim may experience trouble breathing, confusion, cardiovascular instability, seizures, excessive bronchial secretions, permanent loss of short-term memory, coma or death.

My question is whether the drag on my reel is working properly. I have a Daiwa Accudepth Plus-B Line Counter Levelwind Fishing Reel (Silver, 47).  I should state I'm newbie in terms of experience with a conventional reel.

Yesterday, I was using my down rigger with a 4 pound ball. When I get to the desired depth I reel in enough line to get a good bend in the top half of the rod.  To do this I need to engage the gear, take it out of free spool, and tighten the drag just enough so I can get the desired bend in the rod.  Lucky me I hooked in to a 12 lb salmon and during the 10 minute fight not once did my drag "give" line out.

It would help considerably if the reel gave out line because holding the rod across my body is uncomfortable and I don't want to lose a fish because of too much line tension.  After each day of fishing I water mist my rod and reel.

Thanks

Hi,

Other than HMB can anyone recommend a good rock fishing area close to San Francisco?  I understand places like Shelter Cove and Ocean Cove are awesome for RF and Ling but its a bit of drive for me.

Thanks,

Mike

General Fishing Tips / China Beach, Baker Beach fishing
« on: September 06, 2018, 07:20:44 AM »
On a very old thread I read about people launching from China Beach.  With the salmon herding through the gate I thought this may be a relatively safe launch compared to Baker.
