General Fishing Tips / Re: Bonking Butts
« on: July 02, 2020, 11:42:26 PM »
This is really great. Usually, I have so much adrenaline that my strike pattern with my bonker looks kinda like this
:smt044
They’re tough as shit. Like they’re the rats of the ocean. So tasty, though.

I found this Ncka post from ‘14 that maybe useful for people.

Safety First / Re: Kokatat drysuit differences

I have a Meridian Gore tex I bought on Ebay for less than half of retail.  It had a torn next gasket which I repaired myself but it was basically new. Its been a great investment.

About the only complaint is that it does get hot when the temps are above 75 degrees but that mainly happens in the Bay.  I usually wear a set of light weight Patagonia capilene layer beneath the suit that is always moist when I remove my suit.  But I've never noted any discomfort while fishing.

I once "tested" the suit when I was at Pacifica. My net got stuck in my rudder mechanism and I had to jump in to the water to fix it.  All went well although I have to admit I was freaked a GWS was gonna come up and take a nibble.  :shark

One more note about the rubber next gasket and rubber wrist gasket: when in the water the trapped air in your suit will rise up and provide additional flotation.

General Talk / Re: what are you listening to these days...
« on: April 20, 2020, 09:58:36 PM »
Does anyone listen to the radio anymore, lol?

Lately, I discovered KCSM 91.1 FM.  Commercial free, public and listener funded, jazz music 24/7. You can also stream   https://kcsm.org/jazz91/listen.php

Interesting, I used to not understand and hate jazz.  Now, I still don't understand it but I can't get enough. I especially like music from the hard bop era.

General Talk / Re: EBRPD Annual Permit
« on: January 10, 2020, 07:54:28 PM »
I believe one needs to get the annual fishing permit from the people manning the gates but am not certain because I never got one.  At approximately $300/year its difficult for a working stiff to get much value from the purchase, imo.

Try Lake Chabot.  I have a friend who is doing good there.
Interesting.  I love Lake Chabot.  Big LMB lurk there, as well. https://fishsniffer.com/index.php/2017/12/18/lake-chabot-features-trophy-bass-crappie-trout/

General Fishing Tips / Re: Trout trolling help
« on: January 08, 2020, 07:43:14 AM »
I gave it a go a couple of days ago at Quarry Lakes.  It was my first time trout trolling from a kayak.  I didn't catch anything nor did I get a bit but damn it was relaxing; no ocean launch/landing to worry about, the tackle was simple, and it was flat, calm, and pretty warm.  No fish though.

To get my lures down to some depth,(I was using an assortment of 3-4 inch Rapalas, Kastmasters, and Rooster Tails) I placed a 1/4 oz - 1/2 oz tungsten weight and bead 18 inches in front of the lure.  I had no idea what I was doing.  But I saw several fish in schools on the FF.

I may try to go again next week given my kayak is nice and clean. :)

No school tomorrow, Veterans Day, so I'm taking my son fishing.  I'm thinking of Dungy snaring at Baker Beach, I've had success there last year, but am considering Rockaway or other surf fishing spots.  Any suggestions?
North side Muir beach...no guarantees... :smt006
Thanks Eddie!

General Fishing Tips / Costa Rica Fishing - Parque Nacional Tortuguero
« on: August 09, 2019, 09:00:32 PM »
My family and I are spending 10 days in Costa Rica observing sea turtles.  We will be located on the Carribean Sea side at Parque Nacional Tortuguero.  Does anyone have tips on fishing in the area; where I can find equipment, what to fish for, etc?  Thanks

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Fishfinder: Lowrance Hook vs. ?
« on: August 07, 2019, 09:03:42 PM »

I would stick with the Lowrance brand for Hobie.  If you chase salmons, a side scan feature is helpful, but you don't need 3d (in case you are wondering).  A 3d only works if you are in AI 6mph+ speed, otherwise it is just OP.

Yakyakyak, can you explain to me how the side scan is helpful for salmon fishing. I thought side scan was just to see a different perspective of structure.  Something that Large Mouth Bass fisherman are interested in.  I have a Hook2 and have not found a use for side scan in the ocean.

Has anyone mounted a totalscan transducer in a through-hull design?  I have my downscan transducer mounted inside the hull and it works fine as there is always a layer of water in my kayak (tandem island).  I'm thinking of upgrading to totalscan for this year, but I'm worried the thru-hull design won't work and I'll have to figure out a different way to mount it.  I have an older tandem island so it is not "lowrance-ready".

I have a Lowrance Hook 2 Tripleshot mounted on my Revo 13(2016).  The transducer is mounted underneath via  a Berley Pro mount seen here  https://www.austinkayak.com/BerleyPro-Lowrance-Triple-Shot-Ready-Transducer-Mount/ACK26657P.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Shopping:%20ACK%20PLA&adpos=1o1&scid=scplp26657_18823_1&sc_intid=26657_18823_1&gclid=CjwKCAjwg-DpBRBbEiwAEV1_-Dpug-4PEiuqQiQ4AV1pGCueUQ-hJNtKNV5ZQJjwlIIiHb-1n1l75xoCWu8QAvD_BwE

Personally, if I wouldn't purchase this particular FF setup again.  I mainly fish the ocean and the SF Bay and have no need for side-scan.

Introductions / Re: Finally!
« on: July 18, 2019, 12:58:20 PM »
Yup, that particular yak has a big following, as you can see.  (I have the same one in  yum yum yellow.) Congratulations!

I just got a new a new Toyota Rav4.  I noticed you car topped it on your CRV.  Can you tell me what rack you've mounted for the kayak?  Currently I use my work truck, Toyota Tundra, to load my yak but was interested in other options.

General Talk / C-Tug Kayak cart mod for sand
« on: July 07, 2019, 08:51:58 PM »
Anyone try to modify their C-Tug Kayak wheels for sand?  (I don't have the Sand trakz wheels and I don't want to spend another $100+ for a new cart) I don't quite understand the physics of how a wheel can move through a sand with the least resistance.  I believe minimizing PSI, pounds per square inch, is key and I've read the wheel should "conform" to the shape of the surface thereby reducing the berm that is created from a wheel that has dug down in to the sand.  I thought of adhering a half sphere of pool noodle to the outer circumference of the wheel.  I also thought of retro fitting a pneumatic ballon tire but this would require a new axle. Any advice would be appreciated.  :smt006
