Title: Clear Lake: Early Report
Post by: Ross on April 11, 2010, 01:02:27 PM
My son Cameron (soon to be Striper Sniper when Mooch helps with his account problem) hit CL for Friday and Sat. We couldn't stay for Sunday because of scheduled baseball practices.

On Thursday we finally got on the road at 9 PM. By 10:30 or so we were in Hopland and cut over onto 175. We found a niced pullout on 175 with a little waterfall and popped our camper top for the night. At 7AM we finished our drive to the lake and, after coffee and breakfast, we got a heathy batch of minnows at CL Outdoors and found the park.

It was cold and clear with no wind. We unloaded and were ready to launch when I spotted Fishhunter's yak through the trees. We hooked up with Adam and Mooch and after a bit of chatting we got on the water.

Fishing with artificials wasn't working for us, so we let the minnows loose. That was the theme for our two days, minnows did the trick, while anglers more skilled than us seemed able to entice the bite on lures. The day warmed up and we were almost hot in tee shirts.

We enjoyed a great dinner with a gang of NCKAers. I won't name names because I don't want to forget anyone, but everyone was gracious and made us feel very welcome. We appreciated that so much! OK one name  - a special shout out to Sarah for the awsome chili!

Saturday brought wind and cooler temps. It was sprinkly, but not bad at all really. 'Coons made an overnight  run at our minnows, but didn't score. We launched late morning into the creek behind the campground and fished on and off through the day. Cameron had great luck and the NCKAers we're cheering him on and walked him through boating his first bass while I was off snoozing down the creek. FH has some pics that he'll probably add for us.

Mooch let Cameron try the paddle board. He took off on it right away, and it will be a awhile before the pleas for a new toy stop. Mooch says, "Hey kid, your Dad says he'll buy you one if you get good grades." Thanks Mooch :smt013.

Overall, a great two days. Thanks you guys!

I arrived at CL Friday afternoon and couldn't wait to get on the water. It was a nice warm day! I met some of the boys, shot the breeze with them a bit, then went off on my own. I managed one fish on a senko. It was to be my only fish of the trip.
Saturday, same boys, fished in a channel, minnows worked well there.
In the pic, one of the boys with one of his many fish. This guy hooked them 2 at a time.
Notice the unruly bankies. The loud one mentioned going to Alaska...
Hor... ses!

Well... here's my story of how the weekend went. We took our time getting up to CL on Friday. Got there in the evening, set up and hung out. That was probably the best part of the weekend. At about 3:30am... I woke up to the noise of raccoon vs. otter UFC style over my minnow bucket. Unfortunately for me... my bucket came up on the short end of the stick. There goes 3dz jumbos... DAMN!!! Oh well... I couldn't go back to sleep and I think I woke up Chris. So, I pulled on some board shorts and we hit the water at about 4:30ish. It was chilly and dark out. We fished but didn't get much until light. I managed a couple of sluggish but healthy bass. About 7:30am... I look over to Chris to see him on shore doing jumping jacks, leg bends and push ups... I guess he didn't get enough of that stuff in PE class. We called it and headed back for some breakfast.

After breakfast, I gathered the boys up and headed back to the baitshop for more soldiers. Picked up 2 dz more and headed out. It was cold and windy. We hid out in the creek for a bit and managed a couple of fish. It got snotty out there so we headed in. Back at camp... we socialized and cooked it up. YUM!!!. It was all good. Then, after dinner... with all of us hanging out... a brave, sly raccoon came in and helped himself to the rest of the soldiers. DAMN!!! That's like 5dz troops... gone. This was an expensive weekend bait-wise. Then... the rains came. Luckily, Melissa put up an ez up that we got last year but have never used. And that saved us. We were able to stay dry for the most part.

We all turned in and the rain turned on. It poured and it was cold... really cold. Even by my standards. In the morning... I was thinking about just staying in and staying warm. But, my stupid self got the best of me and I made my way out. I lasted until about 10:30ish before I got cold. Walking back to camp, a gust of wind got me and I pretty much went from cold to frozen in .01 seconds. I was having a hard time just walking the last 100 yards back to camp. A nice warm shower hit the spot though... but I got soaked again breaking down the camp and loading up. I had to drive the whole way home wet to my underwear. That sucked. Actually, the whole weekend was one bummer after another but in the end... it's all good. It sucked having to live through it but at least, I wasn't alone. Lots of good friends, good food and good laughs. Not a bad weekend I guess... looking back on it from a warm, cozy chair in front of my computer.

Big thanks to Eric for getting this together and the sponsors for their donations. I can't wait to do this again... hopefully, under blue, sunny skies...

Freddie

Well I made it home finally,
And like Freddie I was soaked to my shorts and had to drive home (6 hours) like that.
Bad part is I never unloaded my yak from the trailer.
I want to thank all of you for showing up for this tsunami.
Of the 60 who showed intrest - 41 actually made it to sign in this morning
As you may have read already - the weather was less than desirable :smt044
A few brave souls hit the main lake early but were beaten to submission and the majority were held up in the creek. The temp was in the mid 40's the wind hit the 30"s and the rain fell by the gallons (Mooch - I see a trend when you show)
There was a total of 9 photos entered for the efforts today.

The victorious anglers were:

First Place ------ Terry Gowen ----------- 19.5"
Second Place --- Michael Moltchanoff ---- 19.1"
Third Place ------ Jeff Smith ------------- 18.5"

Thanks again to all the brave anglers who made this happen.
Your support is what makes it all worth it.
Thank You,
Eric

Only three fish for me and none was a bass.

First fish, a crappie.

Second fish a hitch.

And the third and final, a bullhead.

Even though it was wet and windy, it was still a lot of fun.  Thanks everybody, it was well worth the drive from Reno.

Thanks again Eric. The weather really made it interesting. Totally raining and windy all morning. When we showed up at the swim area at 6:30 there were whitecaps as far out as you could see with gusts to 30 knots easy. THEN I saw Freddie in shorts and said to him," dude I dont think your nerve endings go all the way to your skin." After 3 hours of cold and rain the fingers werereally responding that well to simple commands like, tie a knot. I was skunked. I stayed in the creek area but paddled out to the lake opening and thought  NO WAY. Think San Pablo Bay on a really, really rough day. Thanks again and congrats to all the winners and the people who showed to fish in extreme elements. Craig

Thank you so much for putting this event together & driving up all way from Fresno, Eric!!!
Congrats to all the winners, especially H2O :spiderman:!!! :groupwave

when I get there the main lake looked angry!?!? :smt013  it looked like bad ocean... :smt009
I only saw a few people ready to get out, but I guessed many people camped & launched from their camp ground...
Fishing in the creek was actually pretty nice like fishing in a pond until I went swimming to use the bathroom.  I didn't realize & couldn't see anything because of the water visibility, but the creek edge dropped off to 5 ft within a step (which makes good fishing spot I assume).
Managed to catch two nice fish but just ok size for clear lake...  AOTY update anyways.
despite the weather, I had a good time & it was good to see everybody!
Look forward for next event! :smt006

had I known how the weekend was going to go,  I just would have brought wood to burn,    Still worked out....   :smt004

Brought the Fellas, they were good already, got off school....

Team up with Kayakjack and his Daughter and that was the weekend....

The Kids had a Great Time with FIRE and Chasing Bugs/Lizards with GuitarZan...

Of course you all know the slo bite and Monsoon...  My Racoon story was a bit different,

woke about 3:30 and hear my buckets being rattled...  Oh Shit!!!  I forgot to put them in the truck... Dash out of the tent bare feet ( and that's not all....  :smt003  )  to see both Buckets over and 3 raccons having a fest on my  4 dozen minnows..  I make a Run at them and they turn and HISS at Me...  F@#@! That... I screamed at them and Punted one about 10 feet!!!  " EQEECHETT... PHTFFT!!! "

Salvaged about a Dozen...

Pretty Kool, then I had a Good Laugh of what that scene must have look like....

Probably cured those Coons for Good with that Visual....   :smt002

Would have like to fish more but all Good being the Fellas and Natalie were having such a Great Time....

Thanks to KayakJack, You are a Life Saver!!!!  Anytime Bro,  That worked out Great!!!

As busy as I was with these guys the whole time, it would have been much more work without you...

 Thanks!!!

And Thanks Again to Eric for all your Efforts in Making this Happen.....   :smt006

Good thing those boats have scuppers on em!!! Got put to good use. As I watched the rain pour from the house, it started right at 7 and went til 2ish I thought, geeze right on the tourny... I'm sure the company made up for it tho... Never fails when you plan something way in advance. Sounds like the NCKA spirit prevailed!

Dave what lake were you on? Where are those whitecaps driven by the 30 mph wind that caused us to bail? Congrats to the hardy soles that hung with it and especially the prize winners. Thanks yakhopper for all you did to make it happen. Pam and I found the State Park to be first rate and will return, hopefully not as a stormtrooper. Looks like somebody missed something.

If the thrill of the hunt and fun of catching fish aren't enough to satisfy you, and you still feel the need to take something home from your day on the water, it would be better form to do so after the spawn.  FYI meat hunting is more accepted on the ocean or lakes with planters rather than on a bass fishing mecca like CL or the delta.

Hold on guys - Before we throw stones

I tend to release my catch,
But I can't be upset at those who don't as long as they do so in a legal way.
If we have a problem with keeping our catch than I would assume we also have a problem using live bait for a fish that is easily caught on lure. The truth is the laws make for a sustainable loss and in "most" situations many warm water species tend to over populate. If no laws were broken and the system wasn't abused than I say "Have a great dinner" but use moderation.

Funny thing is nobody is complaning about catching Salmon or rockfish when they are believed to be in a more serious state (according to studies) - also - we fish the river for Salmon or Steelhead or even Sturgeon - isn't that where they spawn?

Maybe we all have something to learn about bad form?

I agree as well.  I believe that the regs, if followed, will protect the bass population.  LMB are probably the most popular game fish in the US.  There is no way that FNG officials will let the population become endangered.  If someone wants to keep a fish within regulations, so be it.

Good times for all but the minnows. I managed to get OTW Fri and Sat, landing 3 Bass to 17.5, and a chunky 16er from shore...
The weather was nice and sunny Fri, Sat it got colder by the minute, by the time I got to shore my hands were freezing and I knew I wasnt going Sunday, with rain and the cold front not even here yet.... Sunday morning the shore looked like the the bean as I watched Mike going out....
The minnows... I lost a platoon that were in a tow-behind bucket, but the main battle group were in a latching pail bucket and made it thru both nights. I still have a dozen giants on the porch waiting for Sonoma sometime this week.
Great hanging with the crew, lots of different fires to visit, great kids all around, not a brat in the house.
Thanx Eric for putting this together.

Had a great weekend despite the poor weather.  Went up on Friday morning with my neighbor, and was on the water by 7:30.  For the day we caught 11 fish, all coming from minnows.  Woke up in the morning and fished for 3 hours, until the weather got the best of us.  That and we weren’t catching any fish, so we took off around 11.  All in all, a great weekend of fishing and camping.  The best quote of the day came from a Tournament bass fisherman”….”you kayak guys are F###ing crazy, for going out there in this weather.” here are some pics

Jack, did Natalie find any more skinks?

Eric, good to chat with you Saturday night. Sorry I didn't make the morning roll call.

The food fest under Melissa's EZ Up and at Jedmo's site was off the hook. Too bad the fishing was too. Had a great time with Jedmo and Darius' families and friends.  :smt006

Managed to coax a couple of newbies onto the water on my Trident. I think they're hooked.

Somebody left a couple of bait buckets and a homemade cart behind at site 65. Hope they were reunited with the owners.  :smt012

Will post some pictures when I get my USB problems resolved.  :smt010

And I just love those clean restrooms with automatic flushes!!  :smt001 Even the ranger was nice about us having more than two cars to a site. However, I heard she issued a ticket to an unnamed kayaker. Still, she was nicer than the one at O'Neill Forebay.

Yep, but I could see maybe setting the kids up with some to get their interest in fishing started.

we fish the river for Salmon or Steelhead or even Sturgeon - isn't that where they spawn?
The point I was trying to get across was not the location of spawning activity, but the timing.  Largemouth are spawning now.  I think I would have a hard time taking any fish that was actively spawning.

Although I'm a kayak angler, I consider myself a bass fisherman and spend most of my time fishing for and researching largemouth bass.  I can't compete with the big boys on the big boats, but I run in alot of the same circles and fish alot of the same water.  There is an etiquette in the bass fishing world and as hard to believe as it is, keeping fish during the spawn is looked down upon.  C&R is encouraged, but the choice is yours.  Just know that you are viewed differently than you would be on the salt.

Haha thats funny Eric. Fish were caught on live bait way over lures on Sunday. With all the ones I talked to fishing minnows. I cant say for Terry. He wasnt there. Live bait is the enviromentally concsious bait to use anyway. No toxics enmmitted into the atmosphere during making and natural decomposition is the green way to go. I have pulled fish out of CL with 2 huge creature baits and 3yards of line still attached to the poor thing. Thats a shame. Herein lies the title of my new book. The Hypocrisy of the Artificial Primadonna: A guide to using natural bait. :smt006

I got to the camp at 4 on Sat. and Jack had a camp all set up, Jack is a master camper and cook thanks again Jack the Taco were killer and I will have to buy some of that Basque soaking sce. Hit the lake about 6 to try and find some fish everybody said it was really slow, fished lures hard for about an hour for just 2 short pick-ups on the senko. Switched to minnows and immediately started hooking fish caught 4 fish dink,17",19",19.5, I thought ok I found them and I wanted to save my agents for the Tourney so I joined the party on shore. Woke up to crashing waves,  howling wind and driving rain and my kayak was full of wood chips from the waves it really couldn't have been much worse. I was determined to catch a few paddled out and it was a washing machine, flipped my first mino into the cat tails and I see them moving here comes a fish set up and he runs right back into the cattails then the wind gusts big time and blows my boat into them, my line was wrapped around a bunch and I was breaking them off and had cattail fur all over :smt013 cool just  ahair over 19 good start I shoulda quit then. I tried fishing the main lake but it was just too windy and the water was starting to mud up. Caught a couple of smaller chunks and a dink at the mouth of the 2nd creek north then fished up the creek and didn't get a bite or mark any fish so back out to the main body nope too frikkin rough so I ducked into the creek with the ramp with the same result nothin, back out to the main nope even worse a wave hit me sideways and almost took me off the yak but at least it cleaned off all the wood chips and cattail fuzz. :smt005 Back at the Length In I thought I had a good shot until I heard that Terry :smileinbox: was fishing and I had a feeling I was doomed :smt002. Had a great time and it was super seeing everybody nice Park and great Tourney thanks again Eric for all the Booty it was over the top. Day 1 fish

Right on Naoaki! Done here. It was a great event and I am so glad I came up regardless of the weather. I sure learned something about my gear and that is the fact that I was not quite prepared for the onslaught of rain and cold. Water started seeping in the seams of my dry top around the neck area and started wicking up the sleeves of the top also. So my core became cold and it was over then after only 4 hours. I will say though that the tempest pants didnt leak one drop. My feet were dry and my lower extremities were dry too. fantastic. Tempest dry-top here I come.

I think I would have a hard time taking any fish that was actively spawning.

Although I'm a kayak angler, I consider myself a bass fisherman and spend most of my time fishing for and researching largemouth bass

First time at CL and not normally a bass fisherman. I apologize for not being conscious of the timing of the spawn..I appreciate your pointing out the etiquette side..

perhaps though for the newbies and those who don't "fish and research bass "as extensively as you, a less self righteous tone would be a more helpful vs flaming someone in a public format.

all the same...point taken and next time I will know.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Eric, I failed to thank you for putting everything  and  everyone together. I really enjoy the community and the opportunity to explore new fisheries.
I look forward to seeing everyone in Alameda..

By the way, Sunday early morning, I thought I was being savagely attacked by a rabid-minnow-eating-racoon. I was sleeping on my truck bed (covered and protected from the rain via tarp - thanks to Frank) when suddenly something had clamped onto my legs and feet and started pulling me out the trucks tail gate...I screamed LIKE A MAN for a change :smt002....and started kicking away. The so called monster turned out to be an evil human being that I could not identify because it was still dark and he was wearing a hood....lucky for him, I did not have my home made prison shank available....anyway, as I gathered my thoughts and checked if I did in fact soil myself, I took a peak outside only to see a white pickup with a white camper shell - loaded with 2 kayaks (one being a familiar Hobie) peel off.....

I knew Terry was going to show up, as I had met his girlfriend Sara at Fastop on Friday. Sorry I didn't get a chance to say hello to him and everyone else I didn't get to see. Saw Craig at the day use area but forgot to ask him if he drove the 175 pass in that snotty weather.

For lack of fish, here are my pictorial contributions. I did get to ride the yak on Saturday. Overcast with the wind picking up a bit in the afternoon. Saturday night was calm with brief drizzles of rain. I had sat at the campfire until about 11 pm. Boy, was I surprised to the stormy weather when I woke up in the morning.

Danglin, did you really punt the raccoon like a football?  :smt002

Not many people around when I first arrived on Friday. Then, after Jedmo's and Darius' families and friends showed up late Friday, it was pure bedlam. (Lucky for us), Darius' group set up their food stores at our site because his site was still being occupied by people who were at least 3 hours late in leaving.

Never a dull moment when kids are present.

Sounds like a great time despite the weather.  Nice photos and reporting.   :smt001

I like the way Eric set the tournee up to encourage C&R.

Encourage...  It's a good word and concept.  I find much encouragement at this site.  To enthusiastically share our time, energy and resources together is one of the ultimate developments that we see occur as a result of the encouraging behavior here.  At times, discouragement surfaces.  To look for the half-full part of that I would say that the discouragement that arises is usually a product of someone's concern and very often a passion for resources, areas, or fishing practices.  I have learned here that using encouragement is a good way to try to achieve positive outcomes, and that using discouragement is a means of drawing negative energy into the forum.

In the end, encouraging behavior rules the day when this site is at its best.   :smt006

It was better than when she first started reading. Danglin, thanks for letting us team up with you at camp crumbsnatcher. You and your boys are such a pleasure to be around. How do you get them to behave so well ? I think a guy could learn alot more than just fishing from you. Natalie says thank you for pulling the splinters out of her hand without making it hurt. Guitarzan, Natalie very much enjoyed your campground eco-tours. Thank you. I got out for a few hours on saturday but never caught anything. Before i tell my report i just wanted to thank Eric and his support for setting up this event, even tho i didnt even fish Sun.!...so me, my gf, and two other buddies of mine show up to State Park around noon and immediately set up camp! We were at site 66 and must say that this camp site and area is pretty kool. Anywayz, just before are Sat. Launch I get met and greeted by Jarhead on his way in, who by the way is a pretty kool dude! we then paddle our way out the forest that aligned our shoreline and immediately see quite a few other yakers getting their prefishing on. Run into Jedmo also who i never met before and we greet each other.Kool dude as well i must say...me and the gf paddled and fished around and into soda bay and back for just barely 3 hours of fishing before heading back in for dinner. Ended sat. evening with just 2 bites and 2 bass.yup, all on minnows! Meet my buddys back at camp and they did pretty well for themselves in the boat for 5 bass up to 5lbs...Wake up Sun. and its a S##$ STORM! wake up early with gary(makinitcount) who camped with us to drop off our waviers but never made it out..thought i just make breakfast and chill for a bit before heading out, but the gf and buddies wake up and say lets get the F out of here! So we did! Congrats on all the winners and yakers who braved it out there! Wished i could've stayed at least for the BBQ and was really looking forward to meeting all the other NCKA'ERS who  showed up! But oh well, I had fun the time i was there. Looking forward to yakhoppers future events.

also, the racoons apparently know how to swim  :smt044
Thats right, they were swimming all the way out to the tules, way over their heads.
Im going to convert a 5 gal bucket and use that, I doubt they could open or chew thru that before giving up-most people cant open one of those up.
Jack-That Natalie is such a sweetie-pie! Like I said before, all the kids were great, I know some kids that would have made things miserable on a camping trip -parents fault, not the kids...
Danglin- how much $ are those lizards costing now?! You cracked me up with that line!

Despite the cold wind and rain on Sunday during the bass tourney (for with I only fished 30 min), I had a good time.  My brother(kneetoe) and I arrived on a warm late Friday afternoon and saw the familiar faces from NCKA :smt001 ,including guitarzan holding a bass with he had just caught using a crappie jig (see pic)(http://). The next day the cold with irregular breezes kept us off our kayaks so we just fished along the creek. For hours couldn't catch anything using lures while the kayakers on the creek were scoring some nice size bass using minnos.  We could see bass and crappies just below the water but they were not biting  lures. (http://)Mooch, in the afternoon on his kayak, later scored a 14 inch crappie which he gave to us and I used the roe from that crappie to catch 3 more.  This was my first real attempt to fish for bass and crappie and I learned lures don't work all that well when i used them but crappie roe works on crappie even for me.

ps  thanks for the tacos Freddie
     thanks for the tourney yakhopper
     thanks for the crappie Mooch

Sorry,,,,,,,i got slammed at work and then training after that.

We got there on Fri@10am and it was T-shirt time......i hit the day use area(i did not have a real campsite yet) and pounded the intire area, deep, shallow, tulle's, rocks and creeks with senkos and dropshot'd creatures for NOT.  I'm swearing off minnows for this season and finding myself doing alot more SWEARING as a result. You could see them looking for love everywhere(6-7ft. clarity)on friday.

Pic1~Ben caught this one and it had a oozing hemorrhoid on its' back.

pic2~ fishwrapper/Ross going bendo and his boy Cameron, soaking it all in for future slaying.

pic3~ Fiesty was the thing

I quit in the late afternoon and had to find someone who would have me for the evening. I sleep in my CRV so all i needed was a parking spot. My nephew Chad/Chevydaze had my back though (thanks to all who offered me up a spot) I had to take this waterfront spot.

I was asking about you and Mooch, because there were several sites around me where there was room for an extra car.

Sat morning we went to the creek and those who had minnow, had action. This lil'man had a run he won't forget for a while.....it was his first LMBass and he cut it loose like a Real_Man.

pics1&2~Cameron had a hotstick and was hit a few times back-to-back-to-back!

pic3~ these hungry shore guys wanted to see it on the grill at camp.....what shame. :smt011

pic1~later on back at CampSavage, Mooch was being treated like royalty.

......he then arose and announced that he was going to launch in the creek, to catch a crappie with a jig. In total disbelief i followed and was lucky to witness this (pic2) white crappie, get fooled&cleaned........then played a major roll in the hooking of these(pic3) three Black ones.
If i hadn't been there to witness it, i never would have believed it. :smt007

Congrads to all who won,placed&showed.

Thanks to yakhopperE. for getting us together for the weekend(even though i bailed on fishing sunday and feel like a bigWUSS :smt009)
Thanks to those who feed me too, i was in MoochTraining.  :smt003 andITworks!!
