Title: Shark attack on Kayak Fisherman at Pigeon Point today!!! (Tuesday 11.22.2011)
Post by: mooch on November 22, 2011, 01:11:03 PM
Just got a phone call from Ted/Golfish. He and Harry were fishing in 20 FOW by the big rock Island right across the launch site. Harry's kayak was hit and his kayak took much of the brunt. He is doing OK. Ted was close enough to witness the attack. He will post pics of the bite marks on Harry's kayak as soon as he gets home. THe White shark was estimated to be at least 15-16 feet long.

Please spread the word!!! Thank you!!!

Fucking hell again? I hope you guys are okay!!! Can't believe that it happened again down there!   :smt009

Any physical injuries to Ted? I know the mental damage is tough enough but hope there were no bites as well.

Ted is OK. It was Harry that got hit. According to Ted, Harry is OK  but I have no info on what the condition of the kayak is. Hoping to hear from Ted and Harry soon!

I posted the attack on my Facebook as well.

Ted, thanks for the call and the heads up!!!! Glad you and Harry are OK!!!

Dang! News like this is pushing me more and more to the dark side.  It seems though that the GW is just taking a bite of anything that is floating out there.  Thinking maybe that its a dead whale or a seal.  I wonder if anything can be done to let it know before it even takes a bite.  For some kayaks it could be the end with just one bite.  Better add more pool noodles inside that hatch.  Sure glad Harry and Ted came out okay.

Harry (dropnpop) was on grey hobie outback, he is very lucky. I have pics/video but will let harry see them before posting them with a report. I will say I saw the back end of the shark as it re-entered the water. The bite marks left were 16" across x 23" vertical and made 5 or 6 large thru holes. Luckily it was a one shot deal and the shark did not return.

I am damned glad you guys are OK.
It always amazes me with all the furbags out there that a kayak gets an 'inspection' from the landlord.
I will be interested to know what the conditions were like that day...when and if you are ready to report.
I would also be interested to know where the kayak got hit and whether or not you were under way or just drifting.
I will say it again. I am damned glad you guys are OK. It really pisses me off when the tax man F#ks with one of my brothers.

Number of NCKA'ers hit by sharks whike kayaking= 3

NCKA'ers hit by lightning, or a semi on the way to the coast= O

can we put the old "odd's are..." thing to rest, finally?

I'm glad you guys are OK.  The one comforting thing is noone has gotten hurt in any of our incidents.

I'm REALLY glad you guys are OK. It is a serious place, and the seriousness increases the deeper into the fall shoulder season you get.

I've become much more conservative in my fishing since my little encounter, and that fish didn't even touch my yak.

Holy sh1t! I am glad you 2 are ok.

Pigeon Point is one of my favorite places to fish, although I tend to shy away from that place when autumn rolls around. It is less than 5 miles north of Ano Nuevo, closer than Bean Hollow! I always thought fishing in less than 30' of water was safe... until now. :smt009

Thanks Guys for your support and concerns.  At this very moment things are still shaky for me...I am up and down with my emotions.

Ted & I started out the day fishing the north side of the light house parallel to the big island, drifting north. Conditions were south winds (approx. 10-15 MPH), north swell, water was wind chop and lumpy. We were probably in the water 1-1/2 hours when I got hit. When I was hit by GW I thought I got hit by a boat, but the impact felt like being hit by a car. The impact/bite was directly under my seat (approx. mid ship). The impact was hard enough to send me airborne and flip my Outback...and I am 6'2" and weigh 235 lbs. I can't explain the sheer panic and fear I felt at that very moment. I landed in the water and have never scurried so quickly to get back to the kayak that was still upside down. Ted witnessed the shark's reentry into the water and saw the last half of the shark's body. So apparently, the shark had enough velocity to go airborne.

Ted came over to assist and calm me down, but I was still in panic mode. And, all I wanted to do was get out of there. Ted came along side and I grabbed the handle on the back side of his kayak and he started to paddle us in. Because my kayak was still upside down it created a drift sock effect and along with the conditions it made it almost impossible to gain any ground. Ted had his hands full trying to get us in.

The decision was made that I would have to go back into the water and right the kayak. It took a long time before I finally went back into the water fearing GW may be lurking. Once we righted the kayak we headed for shore. But because of the punctures, my kayak was slowly being swamped which made it difficult to maneuver. I had to use my paddle as outriggers to keep the kayak from flipping again. The entire time all I could yell out was F--K, F--K, F--k...I just wanted to literally run across the water to get to the beach!

Thanks TED for the assistance and support.

I know who rules the roost, and now I know who the land lord is and it has my deepest respect.

Harry

Thanks for sharing your story with us Harry! I can only imagine what the re entry to right the yak felt like!!! Not to mention the entire paddle in constantly thinking you are about to get hit again!!

Really glad to hear you guys are okay. Super bummed to hear about yet another attack on my favorite section of local coast.  :smt012

So were you guys hit right out front of the little bay by prisoner rock or more like due west of the lighthouse?

I've always been on guard there but felt (foolishly) that if I stayed near the kelp beds I should be okay....

Wow, I'm really glad you guys are okay!  I can't imagine how you two are feeling.  I've gone out of PP a good number of times the last couple of years, some of them with Ted.  With this latest incident, I am having second thoughts about launching out of there, at least during the peak of the GWS migration.  Again, I'm really, really glad that no one was physically injured in this attack.

Holy shit!!!!   What more can be said.
That place has become my favorite place and I just cant get enough of it.   But every time I am there I have a highly uneasy feeling.   I love it there and can accept some risk but that place just made me uncomfortable despite my great love for it.
Clearly there is something going on there that makes it different from other places.   Maybe the ling cod and rockfish association have hired security guards to protect them.  3 hits in a short period is a bit much.

Glad you guys are ok.   Holy shit.

Really glad things turned out OK, Harry's a great guy, fisherman and waterman. I don't extend fishing invitations to just anyone and feel kinda bad that I was the one that initiated this trip. I called Harry late last night to see if he wanted to go and he was all for it.

We planned meeting around 9:00, I got there early and met 2 guys with a large aluminum canoe. They launched quickly on the south side and were back in within 5 mins. They said the water was brown, no vis, eel grass everywhere and thousands of tiny jellyfish. So Harry shows up and we decide to launch on the north side.

Condtions were craptastic, a hang you legs over the side, barely watching the FF and watching for the wind waves kind of day. Because of the conditions we stayed in close, barely venturing out side the little rock island (not prisoner rock, it is on the south side). We were in like 20-30ft most times, I saw as low as 13ft sometimes with the minus tide coming. I lost a ling about 25" at the surface almost immediately and kept 2 very nice blacks 21-22".

We continue to fish and battle the conditions, Harry never seems bothered by it though. I was about 20 yards inside Harry facing shore when I hear the yell. I turn and see Harry getting launched off his yak, but then my attention is immediately drawn to the back end of the GWS going in the water. I saw about 7ft of it but did not see the top fin. The GWS had to be completely airborn to go in at that angle.

We somehow make it to shore after trying unsuccessfully to get Harry in without him going in the water. Luckily we were close in because his yak had some serious holes in it that we did not know about.

All my theories got blown up about fishing out there; GWS like to attack when it's cloudy or low light, chop on the water makes it harder for them to find you, they can't "Polaris" attack in shallow water, staying close together helps....so much for those theories...I'm done fishing there fall/winter.

This is my 2nd video of an incident, let's make it my last.

Harry gave his blessing on the video so here ya go...

You're right, we were not at Prisoner, we were on north side, that little island is little more than a wash rock at high tide.

Mooch,

You are right about Prisoner Rock being on the South side of Pigeon Point.

Golfish's video showed the rock jutting out at the end of Pigeon Point, and he also clarified in his post that the attack did not occurred at Prisoner Rock. The area where the attack occurred is over a very shallow reef. It is amazing that the GWS was able to launch itself in such shallow waters.

Harry - you are so badass for having had a GWS bite the bottom of your boat like that - please cherish life and be well!   :smt056

madness...i say madness..

thanks for posting guys and glad you are ok ..

me and dablazer were in the water today well north of the area and  I viewed Dons Shark shield for the first time..
I was surprised how unobtrusive the unit was..
I commented to him how the area where we were wasn't known to be sharky but who really can tell.
I had my leg in the water a couple times this afternoon but got a bit spooked so I put them back into my OK...felt a bit foolish but not anymore.

Up under the seat? The teeth marks in the hull directly below your ass?

thats too close to my junk for comfort.

guess ill eat more beef the weekend.

Whoa! I'm really glad you guys are okay.  What a wild story indeed!

Ever since the Bean Hollow shark attack on a Hobie Mirage Drive kayak in 2007, I've wondered if the Mirage Drive increases the chance of a shark attack.  To a Great White Shark the Mirage Drive flippers may make your kayak look like a flailing distressed animal at the surface of the water.  This is of course just a theory, but Hobie does advertise that the Mirage Drive works much like a penguin's fins. http://www.hobiecat.com/kayaking/ (http://www.hobiecat.com/kayaking/)

I searched the forums for conversations on this subject and here is one thread that I found.

The size of the shark may be able to be determined if you measure the teethmark spacings.  If I recall correctly the marks in Adams kayak were about 3" apart, and was estimated at 18feet.

My initial thought was that the bite would have been an exploratory one, but from this...not at all. Sucker knew exactly what it wanted to do, it just got startled by the plastic.

way to practice teamwork guys, that is one spooky tale Harry.

@ Bean in 2009, right where Adam was last year. There's a writeup on the site here somewhere.

I got some intel of another non-contact encounter off of Capitola about 2 months ago. It's either there are more of us OTW , or it is an especially sharky year...or a combination of both.

Thanks for the Video Ted, seeing the bite marks gave me the creeps, I admit I love the place PP BH etc. I am super glad that you guys are OK specially Harry, I think dropnpoop will now become dropnpooped...You guys have all the respect from me from keeping your composure's...Ted this is why I love going out with you coz you always keep positive vibe on the water. I think this is attack is pretty aggressive and went for the kill specially in shallow water..we definitely need to understand more about this predator and respect them in their territories, now we all know why all warnings are given during the late season, Sonoma coast is 2 hrs from SFO now that I think about it, its well worth the drive, I love BH but I always tend to fish north side since most of the incident are south of BH..then again its still within range..I've been telling Dropnlax that I'd rather not fish SMC during this late season...but sometimes I'm just too itchy to get in the water now I have more reason to second guess my launching....again thanks for sharing!!!!

Don't know if I would be fishing the salt after something like that. Long mental recovery and memory.

Polaris attack even in shallower water. Looks like the shark lead with the uppers. Probably a good thing it didn't get its teeth stuck in the plastic.

Glad to hear you are OK Harry...Fished that same reef 3-4 weeks ago, similar conditions....that reef is really a group of pinnacles and valleys ranging from anywhere, tide dependent, 15-30ft deep. And the entire area has similar terrain, perfect fish habitat. Perfect for Big Fish too. By the way one week after our excursion my buddy was out and got the drive-by...said it scared him bad. My bet it was his last trip to fish Pigeon alone....This place is the "Mavericks of Kayak Fishing"....

Harry and Ted, that is quite an excellent adventure. very well told. glad you guys are okay. but yeah, it's not too big of a surprise really,  :smt012

Btw Mooch, you will see an ab diver died on that same spot sept 15 1984. omar conger. page 92 of ralph's book. shallow water. very similar sized shark.

Also, sharks are seen at waddel, but in general us surfers are in shallower water than any kayak. it's a big wave that breaks in 20 feet of water. a wave generally breaks in water that is 1.5 times its height (more or less), so you'd need a 14 foot swell to break in 20 feet of water.

Happy Thanksgiving to one and all. Thanks for all the well wishes, the support and the true kindness that comes from all of you. It's hard for me to try to post this because my emotions are just so overwhelming. I read some of your posts and it immediately takes me to tears. For the most part, it's all been well-wishers. For some, it's waving the boney finger. What happened Tuesday no one could have ever expected, especially me-- or Ted. I am a fucking diehard fisherman that maybe should have been more aware of the surroundings or the situation or the time of the year. Bottom line, we just wanted to go fishing.

Today being Thanksgiving, it really brings it home for me how truly grateful I really am to be among family and friends and how that all could could have just come to a screaming fucking end (sorry for the F-bombs, but that's the way I feel). This event has truly changed my outlook on life. I will continue to fish and share time on the water with you, my brothers. It's hard for me to send this to you right now because I can't see through my tears. I try to keep busy so I don't have to think about how that GWS shot me out of the kayak like I wasn't even there. It's a mental picture that I will never, ever forget. To those who have sent me PMs, give me time and I will respond. It's all you guys who have sent your well wishes, and your support and your love-- I am truly, truly grateful.

Once again, Happy Thanksgiving.

I say you are blessed and lucky, both for surviving (which I am very thankful for) as well as actually being part of the planet for a few very real moments(when you're the food...) and thank you for sharing the experience  :smt0

Wow ! Your Hobie OB did you well. I don"t think my p15 would have faired as well. You have a lot thicker plastic in that area of your hull.
Thanks for sharing your ordeal with us Harry, hope your having a great Thanksgiving....tight lines...Darin

Man, those Shark Shield thingy's are looking better and better.   Glad you guys are OK.  Well told.  A true Thanksgiving gift (that no one was hurt)!

Time to open a GWS fishery?

I'm sorry this happened, and am thankful you are both OK.  I can only imagine what the experience was like.  I'm glad you guys stuck together and made it out in one piece, and I admire your composure here on the board.

I fish that area regularly, though I slow down this time of year.  However, we had a sighting in May at PP and another in June at EKG.  I think the sharks are there all the time, but maybe more this time of year.  I'll continue to fish there - with precautions - and would be happy to go with either of you next time you venture out.

Glad everything worked out ok. I personally will not fish that area anymore. After all, it's just rockfish and there are lots of less sharky places to fish.

Ted and Harry,
I am grateful you guys came ashore intact and more grateful that you shared your experience publicly.  I'm acquainted with a few guys around the world who have been in the jaws of the white shark and they all have returned to the water.  The emotional impact will plateau and when it does, I look forward to fishing with you both!
Happy Thanksgiving Too All!

Harry - Glad to hear you came through this unscathed (physically, mentally will take a while to wear off).  It's great that it sounds like you're ready to get back on the horse and keep fishing.

Ted - Way to be a wingman and get your partner in to the beach.

You both get major kudos for being so cool headed in the video not long after the attack.

I've got the same boat as Harry and know where it won't be fishing anytime soon.

Wow. Glad everyone's OK.

To see those clean, neat puncture marks in the kayak is really very revealing. That's some power.

Sorry Ted, I kinda got quoted out of context on that surfline thing. It was late in the evening when my friend at surfline called me, and you & Harry had not posted the details yet so I didn't know the whole story.

This was definitely not an exploratory bite, certainly predatory, like the hit on Adams yak.
The point I was trying to make was that the shark was not trying to attack the paddler directly, only the kayak, and it was miscommunicated. I hate being quoted.

This was a powerful experience for both of you guys involved, and I in no way meant to diminish the severity of it.

Wow,
Just read the whole thread for the first time.
Harry glad you returned safely and I'm sure your mortgage with the landlord is now paid in full.
Time will heal the emotional scars.
Ted major props for being there for a brother, another reason to not go out alone.

Holy Cow! I just heard & read about this for the 1st time. Late to chime in but I still mean it with the utmost sincerity: Stoked to hear you're both OK! Seriously, that is the most important part here. Thank you for sharing the experience---this is the type of info that will benefit all of us.
Take care, and know you've got family here if you need help w/anything!

Sorry you had to go through this, and super glad you came out OK.....

Not to wave the bony finger, but:

We've had a bunch of discussion on GWS on this site, and particularly about that area.

I've fished this coast for a very long time, and one of my good buddies is a major researcher on GWS.  His advice to me (which I mostly heed) is just NOT to kayak fish that area between October through March.  (though the GWS can be in the area at any time, this is "cafeteria time" for them)

I would urge all who haven't as yet, refer to a series of articles Paul Lebowitz and I put together last year for Kayak Angler Magazine.  You can read it online for free, lots of good info on recent history as well as strategies for avoidance.

Again, glad you guys are safe and I hope I never have to feel like you did in that video, in shock over a very narrow escape.  Hope I can fish with you both soon.

Allen

Glad no one got hurt. This area of SMC is proven a high risk area to fish. For those of you that fish this area please Don't go out there solo.

Glad to hear no one was hurt... November is a BIG month for shark research at Ano Nuevo due to the Elephant Seals pupping.

Very true but how come we never hear of any attacks on people who surf Waddell Creek? It's just a stones throw from Ano Nuevo.

I met a surfer that was bit there
