Title: Brookie or brown?
Post by: sonoramike on January 27, 2018, 05:20:11 PM
At melones a huge school of juvenile trout have shown up at the 49 access. I have been catching dozens of browns. I went back out this morning and caught a bunch more but I only snapped one picture. I wasn't even paying attention just figuring it was just another brown. when I looked back at the pic this evening I think this one might have been a brookie. Looks like blue halos around the orange dots and if you zoom in it looks like wormy lines on the fin and possibly the back.
Would they have planted brooks and browns together?

I’m not an expert, but it looks like a brown to me. The fins lack the orange color and white leading edges of brook trout.

I’m also thinking that it is a wild fish and not planted due to the fins and tail not being all beat up, but again I’m not an expert.

Hopefully somebody with some more knowledge will weigh in.

Whatever it is it sure is a pretty fish!

Brown, and that's crazy how they're schooled up like that. Makes me think they planted them.

Nice color on that guy. I like the red spots. I was catching some brooks and small browns last year and not quite sure on some of them. What Chris told me a general rule of thumb is true trout (bows, browns and cutts, etc.) have dark spots on a light background. Where char (brooks and lake trout) have light spots on a darker background. Typically. So I'm thinking brown? Cool fish.

Haha, still there huh. Thinking about taking the kids out tomorrow so they can get some fly practice with easy targets. Has to be thousands in that cove.

There were still quite a few but nothing like last week.
