For Sale / 2013 Hobie Tandem Island $4K. Full fishing package.

2013 Hobie Tandem Island $4K. Full fishing package.
Nice TI rigged for fishing and ready to go. I bought this new off the shelf from Kayak Connection in Moss Landing, CA in 2016. It sat for 3 years unused still in shrink wrap! I've since fished this kayak everywhere along the coast from Sekiu Washington all the way down to San Diego. It spent the majority of the time in the waters of SF and Monterey Bay chasing Chinook. It's been a lot of fun, but I've since bought a power boat to do my fishing here in SD, so I have no use for the kayak.

I've done quite a bit of upgrades:
1. Wired for Navico products. I've moved most of my electronics to the new boat, but I have a 50/200 transducer I will include. You will need a Lowrance or Simrad head unit. It is set up to accept a battery, we can discuss selling my Lithium 12V battery, but I'm current using it for my kite reel :reel:
2. Rear bilge pump. I've had to use it once when I left my drain plug in my pocket and not screwed into the kayak. It's a nice to have when you are 9 miles off shore chasing salmon for 12 hours. Boat will also come with a hand pump.
3. Motor mount. This is a great motor mount for 2 or 3hp motors. I will include the 2 stroke johnson (tohatsu) with the boat. It looks rough but it runs. It needs a new handle. It fouls spark plugs every once in a while, so you must be mechanically inclined to run this motor. It has never failed me, but it is loud. I recently bought a 3.5 tohatsu which we can consider adding into the purchase, but that motor has issues with this motor mount setup which we can discuss.
4. Kayak Bob's Spray Skirts. These are great if you have ever owned a TI you will understand why.
5. Will include gaff w/ measuring tape, drift sock, 5 gallon bucket with bait tank bilge pump & Battery
6. Rear seat is amazing - its a "Tempress Deluxe Trojan High Back Boat Seat", unavailable anymore. Fits PERFECTLY into the mold.
7. Front hatch upgrade. It eliminates all of the water intrusion from the front hatch, a known problem on the TIs.
8. Kayak cart wheels with TI attachment
9. Recall item: Aka bar clips upgrade to post 2016 style
10. Downrigger mounts (or rod holder mounts) on the aka bars. We can discuss including the downriggers for an extra price. They are Manual Canon 10STX. Very nice downriggers, capable of 200ft, 2 ft per second. I have downrigger balls too which I can include.
11. Kayak is registered and titled
12. If you need a handheld VHF we can also discuss.

If I was to keep fishing this kayak, I would probably upgrade the tramp clips. I originally had plastic, a few broke, then moved to stainless steel, but they are corroding.

More photos are here: (everything in the pictures is included in the 4k price.)

Craftsmen's Corner / Hobie: leaky twist and seal hatch
« on: July 21, 2019, 07:44:06 PM »
For anyone else with leaky Hobie kayaks.

I noticed during the pressure soap test that I was getting bubbles from the twist and seal hatches, not where the o-rings are but on the outer flange. So I took them apart and found a lot of sand lodged in there. See pic. I bought some new seals and installed them, no more leaks.....there at least.

For Sale / FREE Penn 750SSm: SOLD!!!
« on: April 22, 2019, 01:43:24 PM »
This reel was gifted to me so I am gifting it someone else.  I won't lie, it was in much better shape when it was gifted to me. ;-) I've used it on the kayak and in the surf but its not as waterproof as the newer spinfishers so its seen a fair amount of saltwater intrusion.  It "works" as is, but really should be torn down and rebuilt.

General Talk / Fishing: Seattle VS San Diego ?
« on: March 11, 2019, 02:17:45 PM »
Hi all,

I'm finishing grad school this summer and my girlfriend is starting graduate school this Fall so we are leaving the area.  :(  She has some excellent offers to choose from and has narrowed down the top 2 choices to San Diego and Seattle.  I can find work pretty easily in either city, but I can't help thinking which city is better for fishing. :-))))))) I enjoy the fishery and the communities (NCKA/ Coastside) here in Monterey Bay/SF and will be very sad to leave!  I hope to have my first boat by summer 2020 so I can fish offshore, but will continue to fish from a kayak when it's just me.  I also don't want to limit myself to just ocean/offshore as I know WA has plenty of excellent freshwater fisheries.  We've never lived or fished in San Diego/Socal or Seattle.  Oh but I have fished the Puget Sound (Sekiu) a couple times for kings.

What do y'all think? All things considered (offshore boating, inshore kayaking, rivers) is the fishing better in Seattle or San Diego?

Thanks
David

This is from a private boater recaping the crab opener on 11/3 at HMB.  I'm not trying to start a fight here, but you guys need to be more careful.  Thankfully most people on this board are smart and aware, so its mostly for the newcomers.

This boater barely saw a kayaker out in the channel (between the red and green buoys) because all he had on was a headlamp.  That morning at some point harbor patrol prevented kayakers without appropriate navigation lights to leave the harbor so this guy must have snuck out before that happened.  Not sure if everyone understands this but kayakers sit very low to the water and, if there is any swell at all, are very difficult to see.  It is best to have a light on at least a 7-8 foot pole visible from 360 degrees.  This is allow you to be seen even if there is a swell.

Be safe out there and don't be stupid.

"We launched on opening day at 5am, turned around to a launch line out to the highway. Motored over to the slip and started baiting the pots and wait for day light. For opening day I had so and so and my wife's uncle on board. Baiting pots took 10 mins so we started to motor out and it was dark that morning. The weather man was spot on for 11/3 to be lumpy and uncomfortable. Slowly making our way out to the buoys I start to see a very dim spot lights...with each swell the spot light goes away, then comes back, then goes away but the light gets closer and it ends up being a kayaker with just a head lamp on. If you are reading this and fished 11/3 in your kayak with just a head lamp you should really think twice about being on the water. You need navigation lights if you plan to drift in the channel on your kayak in the dark, stop being an idiot. I could have killed you that day, use your head guys, and I was running very slowly (rant over). "

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / line counter reels
« on: October 16, 2018, 09:48:17 PM »
Has anyone had any luck with line counter reels?  I've had three (2 okuma, 1 penn) and the line counter mechanisms all failed within 6 months.  I'm guessing its because of the saltwater splash from kayak fishing gets in there quick
