General Talk / Repair/Replace Rudder pull Up Line for Revo 13
« on: November 26, 2019, 02:40:26 PM »
Aloha Bruddahs,
The main rudder line on my 2016 Revo 13 is getting frayed where it cinches up on the cleat to lick the rudder in the down position.Does anyone know where I can the line replaced, I live in Oakland.
Also does anyone know I’d there is some kind of link or YouTube instructional video to do it yourself. I just don’t want to be out the ocean and have the line break and have no rudder control!!
Have a great Thanksgiving!!

General Talk / Canoe Journey Alcatraz 2019
« on: September 23, 2019, 05:56:02 PM »
Aloha NCKA Bruddahs and Sistah,
On October 14th Native-American Canoes from many tribes will be paddling around Alcatraz to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Occupation of Alcatraz. Seventeen canoes, some from tribes from the Pacific Northwest will be launching their ocean canoes from Aquatic Park in SF and circle Alcatraz and back. The launch time is very early 6am because of the slack tide and will be returning to Aquatic Park for festivities, activities for adults and children after till the early afternoon.
Come support these warriors on their historic journey!!
Attached is a poster of the event. I will be there to see them paddle out and return. I hope that if you are interested you will come and bring your children and family/s.
There will be some Hawaiian canoes and a Filipino double outrigger canoe that will be paddled by 5 young Filipino men. A youth program from Berkeley have spent months building a new canoe that was designed by a Hawaiian canoe builder from Hilo, Hawaii.

The 1st Frank J. Miller Memorial Hali-Striper Day at Pt. San Pablo Yacht Harbor
                                                        August 24, Saturday
At the Point San Pablo Yacht Harbor
1900 Stenmark Drive, Richmond, CA 94801

Dear Friends,

For the past 2 years Jack Johnson, myself (Michael S. Yamagata) and Pt. San Pablo Yacht Harbor have sponsored the first Hali-Striper Tournament in 2017. Last year, 2018, with the help of Kevin Nguyen (SimplyCook), we sponsored a Hali-Striper Day on August 4th. We were very fortunate during the last 2 years to have had Capt. Frank J. Miller and the Fury to help us provide live anchovies and his incredible knowledge of fishing in the Bay. For 30+ years Capt. Frank, as we called him, fished the Bay and was a master with the tides and when and where to fish for different species. Last year, on August 4th, we decided that we did not have time to sponsor another tournament and made it into a Hali-Striper Day w/ live bait. Capt. Frank told us about the tides and when to hit the Stripers at the Brothers. For those of you who were there, that was incredible fishing. Josh Crumb and his son Colton hauled in some great fish. Colton is a hardcore teenage kayak fisherman. He hauled in the biggest stripers.

This past January 5, 2018, we lost Capt. Frank who had a rapid onset of cancer and chose to have his last memories of the harbor as those of good times and good friends. Capt. Frank was the spirit of Pt. San Pablo Yacht Harbor and our fishing community. During his last 2 years, I was lucky to have spent many times visiting with Capt. Frank on the Fury catching stripers as he was going about his business. He would tell me how lucky he was to be able to live at the Harbor. “It’s so peaceful and beautiful here”. His wisdom of the Bay and awareness of maintaining the ecology of the Bay ecosystem was something close to his heart.

In recognition of a Wise Man, the owners, residents of the Harbor, Jack Johnson and myself have decided to name this year’s Hali-Striper Day; The Frank J. Miller Memorial Hali-Striper Day at Pt. San Pablo Yacht Harbor.

With the generosity of the owners of the Harbor, we will be able to provide a unique and incredible kayak fishing experience in San Pablo Bay. Camping (RV, camper, tent) will be available for out of towners for both Friday and Saturday nights at no extra cost.  Rodney and Kelly Jue came all the way from Fresno and had a blast!! We will be putting on a “to die for” Saturday evening party. Jack Johnson has offered to donate another pig for Caja China Roast. We will be providing most of the main food and may request people attending to bring veggies, salads, etc.
The Clubhouse has been renovated and has become a destination spot for weddings, parties and other events. On most weekends there has been live music at the Clubhouse Bar. The Nobilis Restaurant had gone through some changes with a new chef, Ryan, who has been blowing people’s minds with his savory local favorites and fusion cuisine, along with the favorites of burgers and fish and chips. There will be more people at the Harbor because of the restaurant, but that will not change the spirit and quality of the day. We are fortunate to use the Clubhouse facilities; thanks to the Harbor owners.

We are charging $30 for the event and live anchovies will be sold at a reasonable price. If you are attending bring a live bait container. It can be something very simple that immerses in the water to keep the bait alive.

We chose the date August 24th because it was the only Saturday in August with a 3.9’ High (flood) tide at 7:54am and the Low 3’(ebb) tide at 12:14pm. This will be a great opportunity to fish the Brothers for a few hours with the ebb tide. Last year the stripers were boiling at the Brothers. We were dropping down with a 6oz. torpedo weight and 2/0 live bait jigs and the stripers were hitting the bait as soon as you dropped down. We are hoping that we will have a repeat this year.

For kayak fishermen who have not fished the Bay and have wanted to learn in a safe environment, this is your opportunity to talk to and fish with some of our veteran NCKA Bay kayak fishermen and get some great San Pablo Bay fishing in early fall.

We recommend that you bring a VHF radio or if you are fishing without a radio, be close to others. If you have never fished in the Bay or the Brothers/San Pablo Bay, we will be giving a safety and informational talk on Friday evening regarding the optimal times to fish the ebb tide for stripers. We recommend that you attend our Friday evening safety meeting if you are a first timer.

Bring your family, good spirits and fishing fever to this event. The Harbor is also home of Jack’s incredible dogs, Shadow and Cherry. The dinner/potluck will be at the Clubhouse on Saturday evening/night and the bar will be open. There will be a variety of beer on draft, wine and other mixed drinks for sale.

Come and continue this great early fall tradition and Capt. Frank will be there in spirit; he never left.

Aloha,
The Owners of the Harbor, Darryl Henline, Jack Johnson, the staff and myself, Michael S. Yamagata (da Bruddah) and Oh, Capt. Frank Miller!

Safety First / Kayak Self-Rescue
« on: April 17, 2019, 05:00:22 PM »

Kayak Self-Rescue
4/16/19
After procrastinating for 6 years, I finally decided that after turning 70 and chomping at the bit to head out for another salmon season that it would be a good idea to take a Sit-On-Top Kayak Self Rescue Class at CCK in the Oakland Estuary this past Saturday. Since My first kayak was a Hobie, I never really learned the right technique for paddling with the kayak paddle. During the class, I noticed that the Hobies’ are a lot heavier than the paddle kayaks’ who were always ahead of me. Sou, our instructor at the Oakland CCK told me to not use the Mirage drive to make sure that I could learn the right technique for using the paddles because there might be a time that I may have to use my paddle if my Mirage drive broke or was not usable while out in the ocean and he wanted us to be tired when we did our last self-rescue which would mimic real conditions. In the past 6 years, I have flipped my kayak, maybe 3 times; last salmon season coming in Bolinas at Wharf Rd., once last season getting hit on the side by a large boat wake after landing a big salmon at HMB and my first time trying to unload my full crab traps coming in HMB Harbor 6 years ago. I managed somehow to get by; but was in denial that it was not a big deal,
What I learned:
I think the fist thing that I learned was not to panic and take your time to get yourself grounded. As soon as I was in the water, I noticed my anxiety and adrenaline rush right away. As we kept doing the self-rescues, I purposely told myself to relax, I had my life jacket on, I could move around and position myself for getting back on the kayak.
I also noticed that it took a lot of energy to do a self-rescue and you don’t want to expend too much energy trying to rush and have to do it over and over. It can be exhausting!!! Get yourself in position with your legs away from the kayak and kick as hard as you can while pulling yourself on to the kayak. I kinda wished I had my short lap swimming fins on!!!
I have a kayak rescue ladder on my kayak and have used it only once. Having a kayak step ladder does not necessarily make it easier to self-rescue as it is very easy to get your body under the kayak and not stretched out away from the kayak. If your legs are under the kayak, it is very easy to flip your kayak over again. The one thing that I found the rescue ladder was good for was up righting a capsized kayak. I was able to throw the rescue ladder over the hull and pull my kayak upright from the other side very easily.

http://www.kayakselfrescueladder.com/

We used and inflatable paddle float once and I liked how easy it was to deploy, blow it up with the end of the paddle inserted inside the float and the paddle basically was like a AMA which kept the kayak from flipping over and you could climb in the kayak with the leverage of the paddle with the float. There is somewhat of a complicated rigging of using a long nylon strap to secure the paddle to the kayak like an outrigger. I think that I will keep one of my AMAs with the float deflated and mounted on the bar and stored under my kill nag on the back of my Revo. It is so much easier to get back in the kayak with a float on the side of the kayak you are trying to climb in from.
Another thing I learned is to make sure that your PFD/life jacket is on tight and close to your body when you are attempting to self-rescue. I found that I generally keep my life jacket straps loose for comfort and once I was in the water, my PFD was riding very high which made it more difficult to climb back in the kayak.
Going out the ocean with someone else if the best way to be safe. It is so much easier to do a double rescue with another kayak on the opposite side as you climb in.
Lastly, after doing multiple self-rescues by flipping my Revo over; I was blown away after coming back in, to see how much water was in my hull. I think in normal conditions one would not be doing this, but it was quite sobering for me. I suspect that most of the water must have come in through the front hatch. Right after my first capsize on my Tandem Oasis 6 years ago, I bought a bilge pump because of water in the hull and I recently upgraded and bought a larger size NRS bilge pump at a REI sale which I have stored under the middle storage hatch for east access.
After taking this class, I’m going to do some ocean self-rescue at least once a year to keep my mind and body ready!!
If you have any other tips for self-rescue, please post!!!
It was also great to meet another NCKA Bruddah- Shan “Mountain Wolf” who took the class with me. It was great that we had Sou as our instructor who is also a kayak fisherman and there was only 3 people in the class so we could get a lot of one to one help.
Good Stuff!!

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Servicing Your Hobie V2 Drive
« on: August 06, 2018, 05:27:58 PM »
Dear Ncka Commuity and Allen (Otobepelagic),

I just installed a new chain on my older (2013?) HobieV2 Drive and noticed that compared to my new 2016 drive, it feels stiffer and doesn't have the smoothness of the newer drives.
Allen, I remember talking with you about sharing your experience about servicing the Hobie V2 drives. On an annual basis, what kind of serving do you do to make sure that the drives last a long time and continue to be efficient?
Would you be able to do a write up about of key things to do to keep the Hobie drives working. Also, I now carry a open/box end 7/16 wrench with me in my tackle box ever since I had a cable slip off and couldn't tighten the 7/16 nut.

Any other key things that others want to share. Once you are out in the water, you can be kinda screwed if something happens to the pedal drive.
Looking forward to learning more as I have not done anything except change some of the 7/16 locknuts and install a new chain/cable.
Aloha,
Michael

June 30, 2018
Dear NCKA Members,
Last July 15, 2017, Jack Johnson, myself and the Pt. San Pablo Yacht Club Sportsmens’ Club hosted a Striper-Hali Tournament that went very well and early this year Jack Johnson sent out an inquiry if there was any interest about maybe having it again in July 2018. It looked like they were a number of NCKA members who attended last year’s event who said that they were interested and would come again. Jack and I have been overbooked and too busy to pull off a Striper-Hali Tournament this year. I have been primarily off the NCKA site a lot as I had a serious arm injury in Feb and March of this year and have been working on a large custom-made furniture installation for one of my customers from SF. I will be finished installing the cabinets next week but did not have any time for anything else this past 6 mos. Jack has also been busy clearing some land that he bought up in Pollock Pines.
Last week, Jack, Kevin Nguyen (Simply Cook NCKA name) and myself da Bruddah (Michael Yamagata) met to see what we could pull together and not do the full-on tournament. Instead of a big tournament with prizes etc., we will be hosting a Striper-Hali fishing weekend. The main fishing day will be August 4th Saturday and is open to all NCKA members. We know that this is the following weekend after Albion, but we need to have the right tides for fishing with kayaks in the Bay and our first choice of August 18th, the Clubhouse was already booked for a wedding. This event will be great for NCKA’ers who may not have gone to Albion or live in the Bay Area or want to do both!!
So, this is what we are putting together:
NCKA members who want to attend can camp out on Friday and Sat night. Frank who owns the Fury will pick up live anchovies on Friday from SF where all the commercial boats go. We will be offering live bait for everyone for $10-$20 a big scoop. You will need to have a live fish well for your kayak. We think that this is the best way to hook up with stripers and Hali’s.
Frank who charters the Fury and has been fishing the Bay some 30 years + is the guy who really knows how to fish the Bay and has volunteered to give a Safety and Fishing the Bay Talk on Friday evening August 3rd about fishing the tides in the bay and best times and locations to catch fish. If you have never fished the Bay, this might be a great time to learn from the Pro. It can get very dangerous and treacherous if you get caught in a fast-outgoing tide or get swamped by the wake of some of the big jet ferry boats that can pass through the Brothers strait. Jack and the Harbor boat will be on call to pick people up if they get into trouble and keep track of who is out there,
We picked August 4th because that was the best day in the month for tides for fishing for Hali’s and Stripers. High tide will be around 6:03am and Low Tide will be around 11:40am. There will about a 4’ tide change which should work well for fishing.
Camping for 2 nights will be no charge. We are asking each NCKA member who comes to pay $20 to cover the rental of the Clubhouse for the Sat. Potluck and Jack will be buying a whole pig to do his CajaChina whole roast pig. The Sportsmen’s Club will provide some staples (maybe Can Huong Chow Mein) and everyone should contribute something for the Potluck Dinner.
SWAP STUFF:
Since we are not doing any prizes, we thought that it would be a good time for NCKA’ers give away or trade fishing, kayak parts, etc. that you no longer are using and to pass it on or pick something up that you may need. I have a whole bunch of Yakima Hully Rollers and Saddles that I want to give away as well as a bunch of Hobie gear that is brand new that I won’t use or need. Sounds Good???
If you are planning to attend, please send a check for $20 so that we can rent the Sportsmen’s Club for August 4th festivities and Potluck Dinner and get a rough headcount for the live bait and pay for the whole pig for the Caja China pig roast.
Send to:
Kevin Nguyen
6640 Hill St.
El Cerrito, CA 94530
Or you can VENMO the $20 to Kevin at:
Simplycook@yahoo.com
Thanks Kevin for helping with the registration!!!!
If you want to go out with Frank on his Fury, he needs at least 3 people, preferably 4 and he charges a $150 for the whole day. Frank will provide everything. If you really want to try to hook up with Stripers or a Hali, Frank and his Fury is like being on a private boat with a skipper who knows the Bay like no other person that I have met.
You can make a reservation to go fishing with Frank at Fury Sportfishing Fishing (800)499-6465
If you have never been to the Pt. San Pablo Yacht Harbor, it is a beautiful and magical place. There will also be a restaurant that will be open for Breakfast and Sunday Brunch July 7th.
Here’s a few pics that I took today, and this is a link to the Slideshow of the Harbor that I did for last year’s Striper-Hali tournament:

Hi NCKA Bruddahs,

I was able to secure one of the last campsites at Doran for Crabfest 2017. Unfortunately, I recently had cataract eye surgery and cannot get my eyes wet for a couple of weeks. I reserved Campsite C, which is a really great campsite that is surrounded by trees, close to the bathrooms and the main road and can accommodate a bunch of campers.
I called the Sonoma County Regional Parks today and they told  me that I could pass on the reservation to another person with the Confirmation #. The reservation is for Friday 1/27/17 to Dar 1/18/17 and cost $41.40.
If anyone wants Campsite , you can contact me and I can give you the Confirmation # and you can Paypal me the payment.
Attached is a map of Campsite C.

General Fishing Tips / Shimano Rocks!!!
« on: January 06, 2017, 11:23:19 PM »
Dear NCKA Bruddahs,
I was having problems with my Shimano Chronarch CI4+ 150HG baitcasting reel for some time and on my last rockfish outing with Alex Bulldog at Pebble Beach, the reel just froze and I was not able to use it. When I came home that day, I took the spool off and noticed that there was a crack on the outer part of the spool which caused the reel to not be able to crank.
I called Shimano American International in Irvine, CA and explained my problem. The technician told me to ship my reel to the Service Dept. in Irvine and I told him that it past the warranty period and he told me to just pack up the reel with cracked spool and ship it to them. I asked if I needed to send  copy of the  original purchase receipt which was over 2 years ago and he told me that he did not need that.
So, I packed up my reel about 2-3 weeks ago and shipped it out. I tried calling about a week ago and I was told that they had received my reel and it takes about 2-3 weeks for The Service Dept. to turn around a service order.
Well, a few days ago, I received a UPS shipping confirmation that Shimano was sending my reel back. So this morning UPS delivered my reel as when I opened it up, I see that Shimano had completely repaired my Chronarch reel to new. New spool, repaired braking and spool assembly system with new parts and at no charge!!!!Wow, I was stoked, I have a brand new used reel that was completely repaired and restored to new and I was not charged anything!!!
Does anyone know if this is common practice for Shimano reels that's malfunctioned or broken after the one year warranty is already expired?
Also do any of you own a Chronarch CI4+150HG bait casting reel? I would be interested to talk with you about the braking system and other parts of the using this reel.
Had to send some pics the reel, it's a little over 2 years old and looks almost brand new!!!!!
This is good start for the New Year!!!I am totally grateful!!!!
Aloha,
Michael

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Scotty 244L Flush Mount Rod Holders
« on: November 20, 2016, 06:11:48 PM »
Aloha NCJA Bruddahs,
I just bought a new 2016 REVO 13 and and I'm getting it ready for a fishing kayak. I bought and just mounted a Scotty 244L Locking Flush Deck Mounting Brackets w/ a 244 Backing Plate for a strong mount as I might be using the holder for Scotty kayak size downrigger.
My question after installing is that because of the locking mechanism there seems the potential for leakage as the Locking bracket does not look completely waterproof.
I first though of just buying the Scotty Flush Mount, but for about $2 more  the Locking Flush Mount seemed like a good deal.
Have any of you had any problems with water leakage, especially if the boat capsizes and any suggestions to make it more water proof besides switching it out with a non locking Flush Mount which looks like it would have a better seal?
Here's some pics of the mount and backing plate to refresh you memory of what it looks like:

General Talk / Remembering My Dad on Veterans Day
« on: November 11, 2016, 02:36:31 PM »
My Dad, Wallace Sadanori Yamagata was 19 years old when he volunteered for the 442nd Infantry "E" Company on 3/18/43 and later volunteered to join the 100th Battalion as they had lost many men in Europe and needed replacements. He was discharged on 12/31/45 after the 442nd and 100th Battalions suffered high casualties in France and Italy and were known as the "Purple Heart Battalions.
My Dad was one of the soldiers who survived the rescue of the "Lost Battalion" in the Vosges Mountains in France. About 200 soldiers from the 1st Battalion of the 141st Infantry Regiment from Texas were hopelessly surrounded by heavily fortified German soldiers on a mountain top and were in danger of being annihilated. This is from an interview from a 442nd Vet Rudi Tokawa: " General Dalquist came to Colonel Pursall and I heard him say" 'Order your men to fix bayonets and charge.' Pursall go real angry, literally lifted the general up and shook him. I saw this with my own eyes. He told the general, 'Those are my boys you're trying to kill. You're not going to kill my boys. I won't let you kill my boys. If there's any orders to be given for my boys to attack, I'll give the orders personally and I'll lead them.' To make a long tragic story short, General Dalquist persisted and the 442nd and 100th Battalions battled their way up the mountain, suffering many casualties at every advance and when all seemed to be lost, got up, yelling and charging up the mountain where the Germans artillery and soldiers were entrenched. With soldiers falling and dying, the German soldiers were so shocked that they abandoned their post and that is how the Lost Battalion was rescued. To rescue 200 men, the 442nd and 100th Battalions suffered 800 casualties. This is a picture of my Dad, one the many brave Japanese-American soldiers, many from Hawaii who fought bravely and sacrificed their lives to a country that had imprisoned their own Japanese-Americans citizens in Internment Camps in California and Nevada. Till this day the 442nd and 100th Battalion remain the most decorated combat units the US Army.
This is a picture of my Dad as an American soldier with the 442nd Battalion:
Thanks Dad for your bravery and courage and I know how much you and fellow soldiers suffered from PTSD after coming back home. You will always be my HERO!!!

After all this, I cannot bear to comprehend that we have just elected a President who is a racist, never served in the Armed Forces and has dishonored minorities and people of color. I thought that we have come a long way from that…..

BEWARE!!!!!
Dear Friends,
I wanted to make all of you aware that there are " people" trolling Craigslist customers who are trying to sell an item. I recently posted an item that I wanted to sell on Craigslist and immediately got a text from someone (a woman)? the next morning saying that she was very interested in the Onyx bathroom vanity top that I was selling and informed me that she was busy and her husband was going to send me a cashier’s check for $50 over the advertised price. Her instructions were to cash the check ASAP and inform her that I had received the funds. Needless to say, I was elated, but something didn’t feel right.
Anyway, I never got the check, but today I received a cashier’s check for $1800+, looked completely legit, but it just didn't make sense why a Physician's Organization in Illinois would be sending me all this money.
To make a long story short, we tracked down the organization on Google and my wife Janice called them today. To our surprise someone answered and a woman told us that they have been getting a lot of phone calls like this. it seems that there are people trolling Craigslist sellers and sending them what looks like legit cashier checks. As soon as you cash the check, they have found a way to raid your bank account. This woman told us that their organization had nothing to do with the cashier check that I received and that for some reason the common denominator of all the callers was being a Craigslist seller.
Wow!!!Isn't that kind of freaky and scary!!!
Tonight I got an email form this supposedly woman telling me that her husband will be sending me a cashier’s check for $325 that I will receive via Priority Mail on Monday and that I should cash it and use the extra money to pay somebody else!!!!!
It's amazing what kind of scams people are doing these days!!!
If YOU ARE A CRAIGSLIST SELLER BEWARE of cashier's checks that look very real and by all means do not cash it if you do not know who the sender is!!!
Your BANK ACCOUNT could be raided!!!!
Felt a moral obligation to share this info with you.
Best,
