Kids are on spring break, salmon are biting, wind and swells perfect. Time to break out the portabote and go trolling, hopefully put my kids onto some fish! 6 mile run in good conditions...yup....doable. But I forgot to bring my dang VHF radio....somehow left it at the house. ARGH!!!!! Stare at the water. Stare at other boaters/kayakers. Take a deep breath and do the right thing. Kids, we're going rockfishing instead!

What would you do?

Smiles says it all...

You're a good dad! Some of my best memories of fishing are sunfish with a cane pole from an Indiana river. Like he said, doesn't matter what you are catching.

I’m assuming you still had your cell phone?
Did you also have a gps and compass?

Yep, had cell, 2 GPS units (handheld and fishfinder), and compass. If I had teamed up with someone (another boater or kayaker), would have been fine. But we had a late start, got to Moss at 8:30am, everyone had pretty much launched and a few PBs were already coming back with limits. Had a hard time explaining to kids why we were going to drive 30min to Monterey.  But it was the right decision. Especially for someone who only gets to fish once awhile and is still new to boating.
