Yesterday I found myself at home with a few hours before sunset and nothing to do.  Like any self respecting NCKA member with a few hours spare time, I decided to go fishing :smt003.  My wife had driven our Yak mobile to work, leaving me with a short bed truck.  After "securing" (I use the word securing in it's loosest sense.)  I headed down to one of our local lakes.  As my truck descended down the canyon through the rear view mirror I watched my kayak quickly ascend.  As if realizing it is a watercraft and unfit for flight the yak thudded behind the truck.  Now with a quarter sized hole in the hull, courtesy of a rock; I am grounded until my plastic welding kit arrives in the mail.  I proudly take my place on this wall of shame.

Ouch!  Dude, those carp were hard on you, but good for your character!  Way to share it.  And Mike's right, we need some pics, eh?   :smt002

Welcome to the Kayak launch club.  I launched one off the top of a van years ago - on the freeway.  Mine did 70 mph for a few seconds.

May this be your only aerial launch

I lost a yak out of the back of a friends truck.
I also nearly destroyed out canoe in a storm a few years ago, when it launched itself across 3 lanes of mountain traffic...

I tie thing down REAL TIGHT these days

Whew!  I'm glad I'm not the only one.  I will take a pic tomorrow to satisfy you voyeurs.  Luckily I was on a dirt road. If that damned rock wasn't sitting in the road my kayak would probably be fine.

Ugh, sorry to hear about the damage but it made a pretty good story! Glad it hear it was only a dirt road.

I lash my yak down like a hurricane is coming - I'm paranoid of having it blow off on the freeway. Seen too many mattresses & other stuff that's gone airborne and sometimes cause some gnarly havoc. Aside from losing my kayak, I'm afraid of becoming "that guy" who caused the pile up on the interstate!

Thanks for the post & hope the plastic patch seals it up.

Was it on the way to clementine, and have you gone after the red eyes in that lake ?

Yeah it was on the road to upper lake.  I have fished for the red-eyes from shore, but never from the kayak.  I don't know why, but I am not very interested in catching bass.  I prefer trout, salmon or saltwater fish.

OMG, so true.  Good thing ATF's boat didn't smack a trailing vehicle.

Great reminder for everyone, newbs and veteranos alike - check your rigging 3x

My story is in here :smt011. It was one of the first posted in this column.
For me, it was the poor design of yakima's mako saddle strap connection, on 101 going 65mph. (The saddles are great, but you got to just pull off the straps they come with & toss them. I use a long strap under the bar & no probs in 3 years).
