I am looking for kayak that will be stable in the ocean. I would like to primarily fish Northern CA coast and some local rivers. I am 6’1 250lbs and located in the sac area. I’m looking to spend up to $1200 . Let me know what you think. Thanks. New or used is fine.

I think I saw someone on the forum selling his Wilderness Thresher 155. I’ve been very happy with my Thresher, it is very stable in the ocean.

There was a 2013 Outback on craigslist for $1250 not too long ago in your area.  Not sure if it's still available.

Do you prefer to peddle or paddle?
I'm jaded to Hobies for peddling, but for paddling, I really like my Ocean Kayak Trident.   You can find a nice Trident or Prowler 13 for $500-900.

Pedaling wild be nice, but I think it’s out of my price rangeZ I’m looking at Tridents in my area. Found a nicely used trident 4.3. Does anyone know the difference between that and the 15? They look the same.

Tridents come in 11, 13, and 15.  Basically thats the length dimension.

The Ultra 4.3 is a fine kayak and everyone I know who owns one really likes them.  If I didn't fly fish, I'd have bought one - and I have days when I regret not buying it.

There are some good YouTube videos out there that explain the Ultra series and contrast them to the standard trident configuration.  They do a better job than I could.

There are a lot of good boats out there in that price point new and used.  Paddle the ones you are interested in, before you buy.  Roll it, see how hard is it to get back in it.  if it is hard empty, think of how hard it would be in the salt with all your gear straped to it.  Is the seat and foot controls comfortable.  Is it easy to load, do you need a set of wheels of some kind. Can you stow stuff easily. What extra come with it?  All things to think about.

Does it glide easily, is it a fat cow meandering in the surf? Can you load some crab traps on it?

I am sure others will chime in as well.

Check out the vibe sea ghost 130.  It was my first boat and I thought it was awesome for the price! I would have kept it had I not gone for the peddles  Might even be able to find a deal on old stock right now.

The Ultra and Trident are different yaks. The main difference is the deck layout. The Ultra has a sealed center hatch compartment while the Trident center hatch provides access to the internal hull. The Ultra doesn’t have a Sonar Shield to protect your FishFinder; you attach the FF to the center hatch (which hinges in the front and can be flipped upside down to hide/protect your FF during rough launches/landings). The Ultra weighs more due to the extra molding/angles/compartments. I’ve owned & paddled Ultra 4.3 and 4.7, along with about 4 Tridents. And the one thing that bugged me about Ultras the most was the way the center hatch & rubber buckles constantly rubbed on my inner thighs. I’m only like 6ft 190lbs so I imagine a bigger guy would experience even more leg-rubbing. It was pretty uncomfortable in board shorts.

Test driving is a must and Headwaters in Lodi has their Paddlefest at Lodi Lake on the 27th.  Well worth the drive and checking out because you will get to try everything they carry.  I went last year thinking I knew exactly what I wanted and the test drives gave me all the information I needed to make the right choice for me.
