Title: Mahi wins CSBA
Post by: SBD on May 03, 2008, 07:08:18 PM
I was too busy working the event to take pics etc. but a yak won!!!  Mahi tied with a 9 pound 11.5 ounce fish that went to sudden death and his fish was longer so Mahi took the honors and $372 bucks!  Congrats brother!!!!

Great turn out with all of the usual suspects.  Thanks to everyone that helped and thanks for the MLPA beers!

Thanks everyone! What a cool deal. I'll give it a quick rundown.

I got to the lake around 6 am and paid the admittance fee. I launched at the North end and paddled toward the cove next to the river inlet. I had two minnows dragging behind me. BENDO! I get dragged around at 1.5mph for a few minutes before I land Mr Striper. First fish in the boat, so I clip him and take him for a drag.

About 5 minutes later with one old special agent and one new one, BENO! Mr Striper II put up an identical fight. I grab him but the lip with my hand (the only pure way to land any bass) and hold him up to my other striper and they look real close to the same size.

Footnote : it's cold, my hands are numb, everyone see me catch two fish in the cove and are coming for me in droves.

Back to the story. While holding Mr Striper II, he decides he wants to go back into the water, so he gives me a big shake and, in slow motion, slips out of my grasp and into the water. No big deal, as the one clipped to my boat is about the same size, which I thought was about a 7 lbs 8th place fish.

I spend the next two hours making my way to Barn Cove. When I get there I get another hook-up. Fight is going good when BENO on the other rod. A Double! Both of these fish are about the same size, which is a little smaller than Mr clip fish.

I spend the rest of the morning in the inlet where I land a couple of LMB.

Since weigh in is at 1 pm, and it's about 14 to noon, I decide to call it a day. I hook up with Sean and he weighs Mr Striper in at 9 lbs 11.5 oz. Since he's the only fish that's been weighed in, he's leading the pack. Unbelievably a guy brings in a fish that weighs exactly the same as mine. Those two fish end up at the top at the end, so it gets down to length. I inch him out by about 1/2 inch and win it for NCKA!

I only forgot one thing.....to take a photo of the winning fish.  :smt013

CHEERS!

Great report Dan!  You had me on the edge of my seat.

After reading your accounts, I'm sure glad the Mr. Striper was big enough to win it, otherwise it might have been the case of the "one that got away" and wondering if Mr. Striper II would have taken the top prize.

Out of curiosity, how many fish were weighed in?  Doesn't sound like there was much carnage done overall - which is good news for the lake.

Michael

Congratulations Mahi!!.    Thanks NCKA, CSBA, and GWKC to a GREAT first event for Patrick and I. Guess I burned up my striper MoJo thursday and friday leaving nada for the tourney. My favorite part of the weekend was the saturday evening fishing with everyone, the conversations (mostly good natured ribbing) were priceless.

Congrats Mahi!

Unfortunately, on Saturday, I was out on the water at 6:30 and fished the whole time catching nada.   :smt009 Apparently I wasn't alone.  64 people registered and only 19 fish checked in, some had 2 fish...

To make my weekend even better, I go out at about 9:30 and meet up with the rest of the guys at Rock Point.  I'm trolling and hitting bottom.  All of a sudden I snagged... or thought I was snagged.  Long story short, it was a 32 1/8" striper weighing 9 lbs 14 oz!!!!  :fishing1

A day late and $350+ short!  :crybaby2:

Right after, the wind picked up so we all paddled across to Vinegar Point.   Trolling again and had a hit.  This thing was fighting hard!  I was excited hoping it'd be my small mouth I've been waiting for.  Rod was all bent, took me all over the place... only another striper.  He was so tired and excited, he milked all over me!!! This second guy was smaller but looked fatter and definitely fought harder.

Freddie hooked into a small mouth and a catfish but thats his story to tell.  =)

This was my first tourney too and I had lots of fun!  Thanks everyone!

Congrats Dan!
FUN weekend, im still stuffed with food. Landed 3 stripers, weighed in 2, one went 30 inches and 8.7?, I think Sean said it went 6th place, same as my first derby there. Got some nice aoty points, a little feisty smallie just across from the launch...An 18.5 lmb, and a six inch upgrade on the striper.
And brought home about 5 pounds of clean, fresh striper fillet, with all the dark sh*t cut out!
FUN campfire jams!

I caught 8 fish during the tournament, but never could seem to upgrade the size. My biggest during the tournament was this 7lb 10oz
(http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=40934&g2_serialNumber=1&g2_GALLERYSID=5dec4830f8e8510b0233b11086792545)

Later in the day I paddled up the river to the bridge trying for smallies. I managed a few LMB's but no smallie love
(http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=40931&g2_serialNumber=2&g2_GALLERYSID=5dec4830f8e8510b0233b11086792545)

Outside of the creek I managed another two striper hookups as the sun was going down. The one I landed went at least 9lbs according to my lip gripper scale. Too bad I couldn't find that fish during the tournament. Here are a few of us during the evening paddle back to camp.

Yep..a cowboy hat.  Leah just had some serious skin cancer removed from her face and that was all the heads up I needed to get serious about reducing my UV...I am in the sun a LOT.

As to the Trident, I had it in the water for a few hours this weekend.  So far so good, but I was on an X-Factor for SOOOoooooo long it just doesn't feel like "home yet".  I spent some time on Friday getting it rigged and it was super EZ.  Looking forward to getting my electronics in the next few days.

Big ups to the CSBA and Sean for putting on a really nice tourney up there. I had fun paddling around looking for the big one but Dan caught it and didn't look back. Good going Dan... way to represent your home town. I need to print a correction on Melissa's fish that she caught on Sunday... it weighed 9lbs 14oz... not 9.14lbs. It was a really nice fish... her biggest striper so far. I'm kind of glad that she caught it on Sunday though. If she hooked it on Saturday... I'd never hear the end of it for a looooooooooooooooooong time. Looking forward to hitting that lake with her and the boys some time soon.

I really wanted to get her into some smallie action but, they eluded her. Maybe next time... We missed out on all the goofing around and social stuff mostly because we got off the water so late. After we cooked some dinner and stuff... we were pretty beat and hit the sack. It's all good though... Thanks Chucke for letting us borrow your lantern... I totally forgot mine at home. Also, thanks for the beer. It was fun fishing with some familiar faces and some not so familiar ones. I can't wait until the next bash.

Fish on...

Freddie

A big CONGRATS to Mahi for the sweet CSBA win.  Way to represent NCKA.  Proud of you, Bro!

I was also stoked to see guys like Ryan "Walrus" and Chad catch their first Mendo stripers, and Hojoman catch his first kayak fish.

It was a fun weekend of fishing and camping with everyone.  I just wished I had more time to visit with everyone around the campsites, but with such long days of fishing, there was barely enough time for dinner before passing out dead tired.

Thanks to the CSBA for a great derby and BBQ lunch.  Thanks to Sean and Allen who volunteered their time and efforts.  Thanks to Freddie and Melissa for providing and cooking awesome dinners both nights.  They capped off dinner with an elaborate chocolate fondue.  The dipped bananas, strawberry, and marshmallows were sinful.

Thanks too to Frank for driving and allowing me to catch some much needed naps on the drive up and back.

I can barely wait for BAM IV so we can do it all again on our own campgrounds with a big potluck dinner.

I would also like to thank John / jdyak and Terry / Hydrospider for grabbing some minnows for me. And Mike / Mickfish for reserving an awesome water front camp site and preparing a great meal (thanks to all that contributed to the potlock)  :smt023

My score for the weekend:

Friday: Caught two stripers in the evening - released one 27 incher and kept a 30 incher.
Saturday: Lost one striper by the yak and caught a 6+ pounder later in the day for the weigh-in (which was succesfully released)
Sunday: caught and released a LMB and lost a nice SMB by the yak :smt011

Definetly a good time hangin with the boyz around the campfire. Enjoy the stories. Sharing em and hearing em... Didn't fish the tourny, cause I didn't get on the water till after 11, but gave it a good go the next day and ended with one striper and one LMB for the day. Most of all, it's fun seeing a plastic armada on the lake and listening to the hookups on the radio. And how about the "winning fish" coming in 10 minutes late. Sean, when you said "don't do it to yourself man" but he just had to weigh it. 2 ounces over the two tie breakers. That dude was bumming.... congrates to the local boy tho!! Looking forward to when it heats up enough to get em on topwater!!!  :smt007

...ewww! I forgot about that...bummin for sure.

pic1~...then Naoaki lands one of his multi-hits and it's a nice LMB (Fish) :smt005

...he had several takedowns but only one stuck. We were marking them in the 20fow zone, then they be back in the 14fow at the point again. If one would get a hit, another close by would enjoy some action too.(except me)
i just wanted to be sure all the *newbies got theirs' along with documentation.

Ryan and I had a great time!!  It was his 3rd time to Mendo, and I knew if he didn't catch he wasn't coming back.  Friday I gave him the uni knot tying lesson, leader theory, and how fast to troll.  I made him tye a couple of knots and had him test the strength.  On the water friday night for a couple of hours, nada.  Saturday we trolled over to the first point on the East side (forgot the name) and then worked are way to barn cove.  As soon as we arrived, Ryan hooks into three one after another and then 2 more for the day.  I managed a couple of LMB and 1 striper. (all released)  Sunday paddled over to barn cove again and I caught a good size striper.  As he ripped out my line, I pressed my VHF's button and the guys on the other end liked what they heard.  The wind picked up and we headed across to vinegar point, and ryan briefly hooks one, but it gets off.  We then paddle on the west side in front of BAM beach and Ryan hooks and releases another one.  I guess I have a new fishing buddy.

Great to see everyone again, lots of fun,  Thanks Hojoman for the campground and company, it was good to hang out with you.

Cheers,

John

I'll take a stab at trying to keep up with you and Ryan at BAM IV. It's funny that, while I thought EVERYBODY had left me by myself on Saturday Morning, what had happened was that, while retying a hook, I had drifted west past the Pomo campground. Gotta learn to use my GPS.  :smt005

First, thanks to Sean for organizing a kick-ass, seamless tournament.  Second, a big THANKS to Dan(s964) for sharing his campsite, allowing me to participate in the aforementioned kick-ass tournament. Way to put it down and win the damn thing, Mahi!

Didn't catch a contender, but I was able to catch an upgrade striper and smallie.  Was hoping to catch a LM, but the smallies kept getting in the way.  Adam, I think the fish got our memos crossed up :smt044

I was hunting smallies for the better part and came up DRY!

Good times, good folks.  Can't wait to do it again...

Congratulations Mahi.  Sounds like it was another stellar event, wish I could have made it.

I'm coming to terms with the fact that a PrizeSmallMouth from Mendo will be a by-catch and that I should HAULT all HUNTDOWNS for them....I caught 2-17" in my first year of Yakin Mendo, while trollin' for Striper. Since then I've dedicated (AOTY-'07&'08) at least 6 soild days of minnow and or crawdad/creature along rocks, dam and many other suggested areas.
...MORAL of this STORY is I QUITE!  :smt010  Whea!  I'm going back to paddling 20+along shore.

...so we all hit it at night, and I don't think a one of us caught a thing! I thought night-fishing was supposed to productive?! I'm 0-fer-3 on my night trips. Freddie took the SturgeonGoddess up the creek insearch of a smallie, so I had to go too, and the rest too!

Wow! Adam, that night mode is pretty bright. I remember when you took that pic. I'm the boat in front and it was nearly dark out at that time. Impressive...

Friday night, Mooch forgot his camera back at camp, so I helped him out.

Not quite a quality picture, but I finally took one of these and got most of the fish in the frame.

That's who that IS!  it was hard to tell who it was Glen(n)?
they come out blurry and you can't see a thing on the viewer. If you stabilize it somehow, they do come out alot better.

Nate~ GoodJobMan!on the undershot! that's how my UWS first came out too. Then I started clickin further away(guide the fish like you were gonna net it, but CLICK IT) and it started gettin the whole thing...then you can CROP it.
keep at it!
