To help slow the whole "slowly going deaf" process, I'm curious if anyone has tried diving plugs like Docs Pro Plugs, or any others. I consistently not only waste energy clearing my ears every dive but also have clogged ears sometimes for days after diving.

I tried Doc's Pro Plugs for the first time a couple weeks ago. I had been diving to 50ft without equalization issues before trying them so it's tough to say if they had any real positive effect. I feel like they may have made it slightly easier (less force) to equalize and kept my ear canal warmer.

They certainly didn't hinder my diving in any way so it's worth the $15 to try imo. Make sure you get the vented ones.

I have used JBL and the pro plugs and like the fit of the JBL better.  I don’t use them all the time but do if the water is extremely cold or if my ears are just not at 100 percent.

I can't answer to the "slowly going deaf and clogged ears after diving" but I have worn Docs Pro Plugs.  I've also tried a few things to alleviate the cold water flushing into the ears.

There was a period of a few years where I dove 3-4 times a week.  I started to notice ear aches after a few hours in the water in the winter.  The pro plugs helped as it slowed the rush of water into my ears.  But over time, even after adjusting my mask strap my ears would feel really tender from even the hood squeezing my ears against the pro plugs, so  I stopped wearing them.

If your hood is snug fitting, what you can do is put your hood on as it would be if you were diving, then have someone use a marker of some kind and mark a dot at the opening of your ear.  Take off the hood and heat up a big needle and poke the needle through the marked dot.  That tiny hole should control water to get in at a rate where your body can warm it.

Good luck,
Nate
