I didn't mean this to be a cop bashing thread, and the guys involved are not likely to file lawsuits...  although that's an interesting thought...  just a (semi)funny story and a heads up.

My impression was one of the State Parks guys either had a bad day or is just that way all the time, and gathered up a posse who of course are gonna side with him and ride the thing out, rather than admit a mistake was made by a person of authority.  The other officers seemed bemused by the whole thing.

Manresa sucks. This story just reinforced it. I will make it a point to discourage people from camping or visiting Manresa.

You should have camped at Red Barn. :smt003 We were blowing things up, playing loud music past midnight and being loud. Beer bongs to no end plus a guy wants to
burn himself up. All kidding aside, the park ranger was abusing what little power he
has. Good to know your friends are all open minded about it all.

:smt012  Sorry to hear of your troubles.  I haven't been to Manresa in a while (last time was for some surf prechin) and never camped there.  I can say this for the rangers in that area, come 10pm, there making the rounds to every beach and kicking people off them.
Me & wife (Girl friend then) used to go to a beach just south of seabright and have a fire in the sand, and like clock work just before things were to get good, on goes the spotlight and loud speaker!  "Time to leave the beach"

"Yes sir, yes sir, three bags full." That's all they want to hear. I learned that one the hard way. Can't win with those dudes(most of 'em anyway). I was an MP in the Marines when I was a kid. I know that is a FAR cry from what a real cop is, but on my very first day on the job, the training officer told me "Everyone is doing something wrong. It is your job to find what that is." I knew something was totally wrong right then and there and swore to myself to not be that dude.

Thats a bummer dude.  I think they were in the wrong...but thats how it goes with Law Enforcement, "Yes sir, Yes sir" is all they want to hear.  It's unfortunate that people like that are working in Law Enforcement.  They give the good cops a "black eye".  Its dudes like that that keep cops from having their own special license plates.  Think about it, why is there firefighter plates and not cop plates?  Cause of guys like that.  I'm glad to hear you all made it out ok.  I've heard a similar story from a friend who got a seatbelt ticket in the parking lot at I think New Brighton while moving his truck from one spot to another!  Thanks for the heads up, I'll think twice about camping there.

Just to be clear, we were wrong for being loud after "quiet time", (10:00pm).

But jail time is a little harsh for breaking the quiet time rule, I felt.

Yeah, but being escorted to bed like a friggen child. That total BS. I've been stewing over your story all damned day. I'm sorry you all had to take that. The worst part is that you were better off taking their draconian BS. Had you (or more of you) resisted, it would have been ugly as hell. And for what!!! Total Bulls*%t.

In 2002, I did a rotation through SFDA - Narcotics Division.  Felony possession/ distribution cases etc.  Gritty, high volume assignment.  The undercovers were interesting.  To paraphrase one narc with whom I worked: "I didn't do well in school, and they gave me a gun."  But as tough as these narcs had it in SF, I didn't see much record of power tripping, at least not at the detective level.  Bullying LEO's, like these Parks & Rec guys, usually don't have much better to do.  The true professionals have their stuff together, and put the beat down when they need to, not when they merely want to.  Ultimately, LEO's have a great deal of discretion in exercising their vast authority.  So its better to obey the commands of those who protect and serve (whatever those commands may be) to prevent an escalation.  All the while roll the cameras/mic's during any public exchanges.  You never know wth can happen...

:smt044  That's kinda the view we take, looking back.

The funny thing was when they said "Hand on top of your heads"

some of the guys were expecting a female cop to bust out and say "Cuz you are about to get frisked"

(cue stripper music)

no life was in danger .... no one was threatened....no weapons found and you went to jail?    I've seen worse campers at Lake Mendocino and all they got was a "shhhhhhh" from the park rangers.

"Not much better to do" is the real answer to why this happened. Imagine driving up and down a beach all day and night looking for "crime". Add a little over-enthusiasm, a history of getting bullied in high school, and power issues, and you get this kind of an event. State Park rangers rarely have real crime to deal with, so they can get petty if they aren't professional. They will follow you around to see if you pick mushrooms, and pounce on you with a ticket if your dog is off leash. For a while the ranger at Henry Cowell drove around with an AR-15 assault rifle mounted in the pickup window! But overall, most of them are professional and courteous.
